Deadly Outlaw: Rekka (cert. 18) will be released on DVD (£15.99) by Arrow Video on 15th November 2010.

The Yakuza movie has remained a stalwart Japanese movie genre since the early days of the countries film industry. Critically acclaimed directors such as Akira Kurosawa (Drunken Angel) used the codes of honour within the secretive crime families as inspiration for movies but the older films tend to focus on downtrodden anti-heroes with a sense of justice.

Later movies in the 60s and in particular the highly influential crime pictures of future Battle Royale filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku took the genre into more violent and realistic territory, creating verite movies in an almost documentary style, which portrayed Yakuza gangs negitively asviolent, nihilistic thugs.

Deadly Outlaw Rekka director Takashi Miike took the genre in other, wildly different directors, pushing comic book violence to the fore in a riot of censor baiting bloodshed in Ichi the Killer or throwing the rule book out completely with the Dead or Alive trilogy.
