John Flynn (1932-1972)

Rolling Thunder director John Flynn might not be a household name, but if you’re a big action movie fan, you’ll probably have seen at least one of his films. UK cult movie lovers now at least have the chance to own his most coveted work in Hi-Def after Monday’s release courtesy of Studio Canal.

“John Flynn was a very fine, efficient and sadly underrated director who excelled at making mean’n'lean crime pictures. His movies are distinguished by tight plots, a hard, no-nonsense tone, and a taut, streamlined and fiercely economical directorial style.”

Aside from his classic Post-Vietnam revenge odyssey, his two most notable credits are Steven Seagal vehicle OUT FOR JUSTICE, featuring the Hollywood Buddhist warrior in his leaner, more ass-kicking days and golden age Stallone prison picture LOCK UP.

Of course, he makes his biggest mark with Rolling Thunder, a movie that carries an emotional punch as well as delivering on the vengeance and hook-handed violence. It’s a shame he didn’t come close to matching it in terms of cinematic excellence but at least he left us one grindhouse classic to remember him by…
