Picture the scene. You’re walking up the aisle wearing a beautiful, flowing white dress, just about to be wedded to the love of your life. This is the happiest you’ve ever been. The organ begins to play, the vicar begins his speech when suddenly the church doors burst open and a horde of infected flesh-eating people burst in and feast upon your wedding guests. Your big day is ruined! Your loved ones are now zombie chowder and your dress is stained with a deep crimson splatter (you’ll never get your deposit back now!). What you gonna do? Kick some infected ass -that’s what!

And that just what happens in the upcoming new film [REC] GENESIS (out on DVD & Blu-ray, 3rd September). It’s a gore, chainsaw-surging, shotgun-blasting possessed orgy of blood shed! The most fun you’ll have since you last watched Braindead! So, here’s a countdown of 5 other top ladies of Vengeance that have left their mark on the horror genre….

5. One Eye

They call her One Eye. Played by the unforgettable Christina Lindberg, this one-eyed fighting lady is the quintessential vengeance seeking vigilante female. A strong influence on Tarantino’s masterpiece, Kill Bill, Thriller: A Cruel Picture (orig. Thriller – En Grym Film), centers upon a young girl who is kidnapped, hooked on drugs and prostituted out against her will. After years of torment , this powerful woman learns how to drive like a looney, shoot like a bad-ass and kill like a ninja, culminating in a highly explosive climax with a huge amount of slow-motion. A classic!

4. Jennifer Hills

From one rape/revenge classic to another. I Spit On Your Grave is a nasty film with an equally nasty reputation. It’s gritty, it’s gnarly and it’s very unflinching. For the first half of the film, we’re tortured with graphic scenes of Jennifer (played by silent screen legend, Buster Keaton’s Granddaughter) Hills’ awful rape. Soon, this author looking for a quiet getaway switches from helpless victim to an unstoppable fury of vengeful force! From hanging, castration and decapitation, Hills goes on a murderous rampage seeking revenge on the backward hillbillies that ravaged her.

3. Geum-ja Lee

Coming from Asia is this fantastic horror thriller from the genius mind of Chan-wook Park. Lady Vengeance is both beautifully made yet disturbingly shocking. One of the most stunning films on this list, and a must for anyone looking for a Queen of Vengeance.

2. Pamela Voorhees

The lady who started it all! Seeking revenge for her thought-to-be dead deformed son, Jason, Mrs. Voorhees picks up the machete and takes care of the intruding teenage campers one body at a time. An undeniable classic and a frightfully important film in horror history. Though this vicious killer is on screen for only a short period of time, coming to a rather unfortunate end, her legacy in creating one of the most iconic slasher villains and franchises still continues to this day…even if Betsy Palmer (Mrs. Voorhees) thought the film was ‘a piece of shit’ and only stared in it so she could buy a new car.

1. Carrie White

It’s always the quiet ones you have to watch out for! In this classic adaptation of the Stephen King story, Sissy Spacek plays the young Carrie who is tormented by her peers and her nutjob mother. Sooner or later, she snaps and uses her telekinetic powers to rid her of her problems once and for all. Brilliantly directed by Brian De Palma , this remains the best version of the story especially compared with tripe including the unwanted sequel, remake and the hilariously awful Broadway musical that has long since been the laughing stock of theatre.

[REC] GENESIS is out on DVD and Blu-ray on the 3rd September.
