Default Ken Russell

I've just finished watching Ken's Trogadelic head trip "Altered States" which starts out as a blinder, focussing on religious hallucinations and experimental psychology involving altered states of mind with images to match: Christ on the cross floating through the sky with a multi-eyed goats head instead of a human one;early Christian iconography being splashed with blood; snakes and ice cream! The film then shifts gear and focusses on the process of evolution with lead actor William Hurt regressing into a proto human apeman, who like all good apemen goes on the rampage. Finally we are taken back to the moment of creation which comes from a void that Hurt is sucked into, luckily he escapes all this high weirdness via the power of love.

A very messy film with an incredibly weak ending but what a joy the trippy scenes are, as Ken lets loose with the full blast of his artistic vision. Hurt is great in the lead role as the blinkered psychonaut who searches only for the truth even if it means the end of his marriage and not giving a toss that he has nearly killed a man as the experiment gets out of control.

So, what are your favourite Ken Russell films and what do you like about them?

Default Ken Russell

Totally in agreement with everyone here about The Devils. But sick of only having a very well worn VHS copy.

Lair Of The White Worm is a very guilty pleasure as well - and possibly the only Hugh Grant film I'll admit to having seen.

Funny that Amanda Donohue ended up in a Yorkshire soap opera eh?

I highly doubt it considering that's the bootleg artwork that has been around for years now. I'm guessing they would at least come up with a new cover design if it was getting a proper release, and the reason I say that is because we would probably know what the new artwork looks like by now if it was due for release at the end of July.

Yeah, I'll be forever skeptical until it actually appears but you never know. It's available to order at FNAC it seems but not dvdgo.

The Devils

I got the original link from home theater forum. Apparently it was also leaked onto itunes for a few weeks then pulled when word got around. Unfortunately word didn't get round to me otherwise I'd have probably snagged it!

Spain does have a history of releasing all kinds of stuff that isn't available elsewhere though, especially with their Columbia Classics line. We'll see..

Yeah, it will be awesome if this does get a release but I'm not getting my hopes up until I see it listed as 'In Stock' on a web site.
