| Dans Ma Peau is another great film that i think fits into this category ![]() De Van stars in the film as Esther, a self-conscious young woman who works for a public relations firm. Her life seems to be going well. Her boyfriend, Vincent, wants to live with her. At work, she's in line for a promotion and the opportunity to run a prestigious campaign for a jewelry company. One night at a party with her friend, Sandrine , Esther wanders into the backyard and stumbles, scratching her leg on a piece of scrap metal. She goes back to the party, and later realizes that her injury is much more severe than she had thought. There's a huge, ugly gouge all the way up her shin, and she's bleeding profusely. She goes to a doctor, who patches her up and tells her she might need a skin graft. But Esther becomes obsessed with the wound. She won't let it heal, sneaking away during work to cut herself. As her leg becomes an ugly scarred mass, she begins to notice a problem with her arm. Before long, she's alienated Vincent and jeopardized her job with her compulsive, self-destructive behavior. But she continues on her grotesque downward spiral. |

Yeah, very interesting film - clearly influenced by Cronenberg - and features the always great Laurent Lucas!

A great film I'll never watch again like Irreversible. It made me feel sick in a good way. Self-Harm is a really serious issue and sometimes in horror movies it's tossed off as an easy way to identify the misunderstood Goth character, which is a little worrying sometimes as it's a real health issue not a subcultural fashion statement. Although this film offers no answers it doesn't treat the subject as trivial either. |

Nicely put Sam, I work with people who self harm, sadly there are a heap of websites that promote self harming as a fashion statement along with peer support. If any Cult Lab users do have any mental health problems and no one to talk to, the Mind info line is a good place to be pointed in the right direction for help: 0845 7660163 Last edited by Make Them Die Slowly; 06-27-2010 at 11:02 PM. |

Probably just me but I was bored by it. I just didn't feel any involvement with the character at all.

| I agree, I like the way it is more suggestive and allows the viewer to interpret the film in their own way. I like films like that. It is a story I can kind of identify with, having experienced similar illness myself and to me it's a very personal film...and it's beautifully done as well.
