Terror Express (La Regazza del Vagone Letto - 1979)
Camera Obscura

Terror Express is a late-comer to the rape/revenge genre that was launched by Wes Craven’s sadistic Last House on the Left, but it’s also one of the sleaziest, scrap that, possibly the sleaziest; though that really isn’t that shocking when you realise it’s from the same mind that conjured up such classy titles as Porno Holocaust and Erotic Nights of the Living Dead - Luigi Montefiori (A.K.A George Eastman). If you thought public transport near you was bad, wait till you see what the cast of Terror Express have to put up with!

Three middle-class youths/hell-raisers decide that life is boring and they need some excitement, so they terrorise the long-distance train they’ve caught. Amongst the terrorised are a hooker, a couple of couples, some businessmen, a policeman and the criminal he has in cuffs. Being the fine example of Italian exploitation it is, these characters are far from regular commuters! Every character in this flick is corrupt in one way or another, be it the father who pays a hooker to wear his daughters nightgown while he ****s her, or the bored wife who sleeps with a ‘bit of rough’ – which turns into a three-way once he invites his buddy in on the action.

The film is chock full of gratuitous sex scenes, of the lethargic variety mostly, and a bucket load of nudity. Texas Addio director Ferdinando Baldi utilises the films exploitive elements to full effect, one scene in particular takes Straw Dogs’ most infamous scene and goes crazy with it – which pretty much guarantees the film will not see a UK release any time soon. What adds to the sleaze factor is how non-plussed the film is about its attitude; it seemingly jumps from conservative to liberal view points from scene to scene. Portraying the hooker as an empowered woman one minute and as a victim the next, same goes for pretty much every character on this filthy little train.

The sleaze is the main attraction for the first hour of the film, with every actress in the cast list getting her goodies out before Baldi decides to up the tension and danger. As the thugs gain more control of the train, and they near their next stop it’s like waiting for a bomb to explode. Are they going to get off and leave everyone alone, do they stay on and risk the police finding them or do they kill everyone onboard to rid themselves of witnesses? Or will the victims rise-up and take a little payback out on them? Being the good little knock-off that it is, you already know which route the film will take.

Too say that this film will leave you coated in some un-Godly ectoplasm is an understatement, it will require hours of showering to remove the scuzz from your body. The levels of humiliation are taken to ridiculous heights here; one scene sees a carriage full of businessmen playing dice for the chance to deflower a teenage girl – including her father! The film has the looks to match its attitude too; each character is sweaty and dirty in one way or another, and style has been left behind as Baldi opts to observe the debauchery, letting his cast have fun with the material, which will wear off on the audience; once the initial shock is out of their system.

Camera Obscura have, thankfully, rescued this depraved slice of gold some the neither-regions of obscurity with this fantastic DVD release. Fully uncut, with English friendly subtitles and sporting in-depth interviews with cast and crew, this is a must-have for cult fans and perverts everywhere. It also comes with a lovely little booklet with a brief overview of the movie by Christian KeBler, which is a pleasant little read. It’s unlikely that this would make it pass the BBFC, even in today’s more lenient climate; so be sure to snag this up while you can, it’s limited to 2000 pieces; so once it’s gone – expect to see stupid money being asked for it!

Camera Obscura have picked up where Sazuma.com left off, and thankfully we'll have some highly anticipated cult titles popping up in lovely presentations such as this next year. The future doesn't look as bleak anymore. Bravo.

Be warned: the films soundtrack is ridiculously catchy.

    Spelling

I think the correct spelling of the title is "La Ragazza...etc" not "Regazza"
