Hill Like Bosoms

The idea for Backtrack all stems from the girlfriends I used to take up on to the South Downs in my youth. Just in case you don't know what they are, the Downs are a 70 mile long set of sloping chalk hills in Southern England. They look like a cross between hump-backed whales and huge green bosums. Maybe that's why I had some success with women up there - the environment was telling conducive!
The Devil has long been associated with Downs. We have a huge dent in the hills called Devil's Dyke that is supposed to have been formed by the Devil's cloven footprint. The we have Chanctonbury Ring, a hill fort based ring of trees atop Chanctonbury Hill. Local legend has it that Chanctonbury Ring was created by the Devil and that he can be summoned by running around the clump of trees seven times anti-clockwise. When he appears he will offer you a bowl of soup in exchange for your soul. The Ring is also rumoured to increase fertility in women who sleep underneath the trees for one night!
So we have a beautiful, sexy place, with strong associations with the Devil, the Romans and the Saxons. Also, the Battle of Britain once raged above the Downs and many a brave pilot met their end in the big skies there.
Clearly, as a location, there was scope for a horror film. Old English pubs and flint-stone farms added a rustic flavour to proceedings.
Imagine you have been having nightmares. Terrible dreams in which you commit terrible crimes. You have the blood of the innocent on your hands. Then you wake. Your life is being taken over by these terrible nocturnal torments so you ask your best friends girlfriend to give you regression therapy. Then the trouble really starts.
She is able to take you back to the exact locations where the crimes took place. You see yourself emerging from the sea wearing a Nazi uniform. You see dead children. You decide to visit the places where all this took place in search of the truth. And it finds you.
Backtrack is a collaboration between myself and some of the most talented people I have ever had the good fortune to meet.
By following this blog you can come with us on our journey to make a new kind of horror film that leans heavily on psychological torment, sexual infidelity and denial in the plot-line.
