Zombie films, there are so many and alot of
them...

Zombie films, there are so many and alot of
them have a reputation, The Video Dead is one of them. Made in 1987 for televison, it was bound to have a low budget and was restricted in what it could do with that budget. The film has some interesting ideas too.

THE PLOT:
An unlabelled crate from an unknown source is delivered to a house in the woods. The homeowner unwisely accepts the delivery, only to discover it contains a TV set that starts spewing giggling zombies all over the place. When a new family moves into the now-abandoned house, the son discovers the haunted televsion and is soon told what he needs to do to send the zombies back where they belong. Knowing and doing, however, are two very different things, and the zombies are not likely to go quietly.
(Source: IMDB)

THE CAST:

Roxanna Augesen as Zoe
probably the best performer in the film, she's forgotten about for about 45 minutes until the end. The ending is actually an interesting idea, as the zombies won't attack if they can't sense fear, So Zoe tries her hardest to mask her fear as the zombies are in the house. She hasn't made anything since.

Rocky Duvall as Jeff
not a great actor by any stretch, Rocky plays Jeff, Zoe's brother, he's the one responsible for unleasing the zombies. again like Augesen, he hasn't made anything since.

Michael St. Michaels as Henry Jordan
The Henry Jordan character is there to help Jeff hunt down the zombies, he was the one who originally had the evil Television set. Michaels is an alright actor and some of his lines are delivered badly but that could be down to the script. He's made a few films since.

Victoria Bastel as April
a pretty girl, who lives down the road from Jeff and Zoe, She becomes Jeff's sort of love interest. She's an ok actress and has made appearances in more notable films such as The Dead Pool with Clint Eastwood and Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant. Her last role was in the 1998 film Somewhere in the City.

THE DIRECTION:
Okay, the direction on this film is bad, not in a crap way, but some of the shots are obvious quick set ups with one or maybe two takes, some angles are off too. There are some pretty interesting shots though such as when the zombies are coming out of the television. This was nicely done. Robert Scott The director has only made one other film as helmer, a film called Ratdog, But he's been an assistant director on films and television shows since including First AD on the shows Heroes and House.

THE SCRIPT
The script leaves alot to be desired. The Dialogue is bad so the acting is bad. Things are introduced and not expanded on such as the Garbage man and the whispering naked woman. They appear then disappear and that's it. There are some interesting ideas in the film and it seems that the Japanese film Ringu has borrowed some ideas, but on the whole film seems too much of a rush job.

THE MAKE UP:
The films only redeeming asset, the zombie make up F/X are pretty good and some of the gore is good, but it doesn't compensate for an incoherent plot and bad acting.

MY VERDICT:
Ive seen my fair share of zombie films, some good, most bad, and although The Video Dead is an atrocious film, i couldn't help but find myself kind of enjoying it. Like i said the film has some interesting ideas and if only the budget was bigger and the cast were better, this would be a classic film, but unfortunately after hearing so much about it, im let down, the 80s was a decade for low budget horror and this film is more of a minor blip on the zom-film rader rather than a Cult classic as it is made out to be...

FILM: 5/10 (half marks as they gave it they're best shot)

With Hal Manciano resurfacing here at the labs i thought we should also look back on the career of another lost legend of cult cinema...one time mega star of japanese cinema TADANOBU FUJIMOTO...

Fujimoto was born in Tokyo in 1950 to Juno and Bunta Fujimoto. at a very young age Tadanobu became very interested in music, especially that of the american jazz musicians, this led him as a teen to begin singing, he sang with many small bands untill he turned 17. While performing solo on a street corner in the Shinjuku district he was discovered by movie producer Ando Yamamoto, who liked how the youngster looked and asked him to come in and do a few auditions. Tadanobu agreed and by 1968 was cast in his first role. The role was that of the best friend of Kazushi Uchida in the comedy CHOPSTICKS FOR CHIYAKI. the film was released in feb 1969 a week after Fujimoto turned 19. it was only a small part but producer Yamamoto liked him and signed him for two more films, BLOOD ON BURNING WOOD and cult sci-fier MISSION ONE TO VENUS.

In 1970 Fujimoto released his first full lenth solo album entitled LOVE LOVE FANTASTIC LOVE. The album was a success and it got him alot of attention. After the success of the album he started filming on the Toho inspired MONSTER MONSTER JAPAN ATTACK! where he played Lt.Akira Endo. It was on the set that he met his first wife Yuki Yaguchi, an actress from Okinawa. After six months of courting they got married and Fujimoto was cast as a yakuza hitman in the film TOKYO TRIGGER, this would be the first in a trilogy of Yakuza films he made with director Takashi Watanabe, the two others being TOKYO UNDERWORLD and YAKUYZA DEATH SHOT where he continued the character of Daisuke the hitman,

After Yuki's discovery that Fujimoto had a string of affairs behind her back, the two divorced with Yuki get custody of their two children Shihori and Hiro. After the mega flop of the comedy THE HAPPY YAKUZA, Fujimoto left for the west and headed to Hollywood. His first role was in SILKY SAL'S MADHOUSE OF MAYHEM, a ridiculous screwball comedy starring Vance Royale and Marsha Zimbii, Fujimoto played the very stereo-typed Mr. Ando and all of his lines had to be dubbed over as at the time he could speak only two or three full sentences in English. The film was a major flop and completely bankrupted the studio that made it, MONGOFILMS. Fujimoto was not to bothered about this because he was only on screen for about 10 minutes, what really bothered him was that he was missing his kids. His son and his daughter were growing up without a their father. In 1981 horror yarn THE BURNING OF SISTER PARTRIDGE that was a minor success and that was followed by his highest grossing american film MIRACLE ON HOLIDAY ROAD a musical where after nearly four years of training, Fujimoto was able to do the entire film in English and he was able to showcase his musical and Dancing skills.

As the ninja craze was in full swing in the states, Fujimoto was cast as Yakuza boss Nobu Nagisa in the frankly awful BLACK COBRA NINJA STRIKE. The film was so bad it was shelved until 1991 when it started making the rounds on the cult circuit. But all was about to change because in 1987, while driving through the Hollywood hills collided his mustang head first into a tree after trying to swerve past another car. Fujimoto nearly died and after a long two year recovery returned to japan where he became a recluse for 4 years. In 1996 he came out of retirement with a self penned script Called A DAY WITH DAD, about his relationship with his children. The film was picked up and greenlit with Fujimoto to star in and it was to be directed by up and coming director Hideo Sakai. The film opened on december 21st 1997 and became a massive critical hit, earning Fujimoto his first ever acting award and his first ever screenwriting award at the AJA's (Awards of the Japanese Academy). at a press Conference for the film, one journalist asked where he'd been for the last 4 years to which Fujimoto responded...'remembering my life'.

Fujimoto made a few more films, and made a lot of television appearences between '97 and 2009.

In 2009 and after 14 major pictures and 7 studio albums Fujimoto officially retired from acting, but he hasn't left the business, he now hosts his own 1 hour variety show on Japanese television called HAPPY HAPPY FUJIMOTO FUN TIME.

So here we are 2010, a brand new decade, one that promises to be better than the previous ten years, even thought we'll all be dead come January 1st 2013. But im not gonna look at what's to come in the next ten years but im gonna take a look back over the last ten. A Look at some of the best and worst movies to have graced our screens. So movie men and movie maidens, here is my....

LOOK BACK AT THE NOUGHTIES...

Okay here we go...2000.

first we have

CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON

The film that brought martial arts cinema back to western audiances. Directed by Ang Lee the film featured Action superstars Chow Yn Fat and Michelle Yeoh and rising actress Ziyi Zhang.
Not only is the film wonderfully acted but is brilliantly shot by Peter Pau and effortly directed by Ang Lee. The fight scenes including the now famous Tree top battle were staged and choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, who was also responisible for The Matrix and Tarantino's Kill Bill movies. The film became a massive world wide success and went on to win 4 Oscars including best foreign language movie and 6 nominations as well as winning a further 73 awards and 91 nominations worldwide. It paved the way for more comercially successful chinese movies like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. The films is a beauty to be held and one that i don't think will ever be surpassed.

Next up is...

GHOST DOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI

Ghost Dog is essentially an Art house movie played as a gangster movies. The film is Influenced by Japanese samurai lore and has the main character following the code of the samurai. so far so what? well, the main character is a Black loner who works as a hitman for a local crime boss played by genre fave Henry Silva (The secret Invasion). When things turn sour, Ghost Dog finds that the mafia have put a hit out on him so he decides to take them out one by one, finally reaching the Boss. Along the way he's helped out by a french speaking ice cream man and a child who he introduces the book Rashomon too. The film is directed by Indie helmer Jim Jarmusch and the film contains a healty dose of dark humor and a fusion of Samurai Lore and Hip Hop culture. The soundtrack was produced by rapper and Kung Fu enthusiast RZA from hip hop group the Wu-Tang Clan. The music mixes well the story and give it a sort of urban tinge to japanese music. The Performance are very good, mostly the performance of oscar winner Forest Whitaker as the titular Ghost Dog who brings a very emotional and Loner like qaulity to the silent assassin role. Another mention to John Tormey as Ghost Dogs handler. The direction is very crisp and the script by Jarmusch is very tight. All in all this a gangster movie with a twist that looks out of place but somehow feel right. A highly recommended nights viewing if you ask me.

The worst Film of 2000...this has to go to....

BATTLEFIELD EARTH

What can i say about Battlefield Earth, not much really, Bad Performances, Bad direction, Bad Script, Bad special Fx, a complete missfire of a chance to make a truely epic sci-fi picture, Travolta im looking in your direction, This was Vanity Project for Travolta and i guarantee that he is probably ashamed of this by now.

Another year and where on 2001

DONNIE DARKO

For me Donnie Darko is an odd one, For starters the first time i saw this film i absolutely hated it, i didn't get it, what the hell was it about. That was 9 years ago. Now i can see the film the way it was supposed to be seen, and why many many people love and cherish this film, Donnie Darko is a Masterpiece of Film making and Storytelling. A film that has so many layers that one viewing will not surfice. The film is basically about second chances. Im probably wrong here but i think that everything in Donnie Darko is a figment of his own imagination. But thats just my theory. Onto the film it's self. Director Richard Kelly, Here making his feature film debut shot it in only 28 days, 28 days is also a theme that runs through the film. It is a very well shot film with some good special FX and a complex script. It also has a good cast with the likes of Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary Mcdonnell and the Late Patrick Swayze. If with this film you diliked it the first time you saw it watch it again, believe me you'll like it a whole lot more the second time around.

Next up....

LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS

Newzealand Goremeister Peter Jackson managed to pull off a complete U-turn in his Career as a film maker with The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. After almost 15 years of making gore soaked Splatter movies, He managed to aquire the rights to J.R.R Tolkien's Massivley Popular rings books. It's quite surprising that any studio would give him the money to make the films when you look at his previous efforts, Heavenly Creatures Not counting, But when New Line Pictures turned round and gave hime the money, they must have though 'oh no, what have we done', but they needn't have feared because Jackson delivered three of the most profitable films in the history of cinema. Nobody saw that coming. After the Fellowship took in 66 million dollars on it's opening weekend, Jackson was propelled to the A list faster that you can say Yo mtv raps. This set up Jackson for life, but it wasn't untill 2003's Return of the king that he truely got the recognition from the Academy, Return of the King took home 11 oscars. All together the trilogy took a combined total of 17 Oscars. No film/Trilogy has ever won that many. The Fellowship was done right, it was done how the fans would have liked to have seen it, it had an incredibly strong cast and Jackson's Direction was near Faultless. The screenplay buy Jackson and Fran Walsh was as though the dialog was lifted straight from the book. Jackson Continued this through the second and third films. The Popularity of the Rings films lead Jackson to being allowed to make whatever he wanted and in 2005 He returned with a remake/New adaptation of KING KONG. He is now though of as a master and is spoken about when talking Lucas, Spielberg and Scorcese.

And 2001's worst film goes to...

GLITTER

Mariah Carey + Max Beasly = shite

That's all i can really say about this horrendous
excuse for a film.

On to 2002

SPIDER-MAN

Spider-man started off as a comic book character, created by Marvel Supremo Stan Lee in the late 60s early 70s, He became immensly popular with kids and adults because protaganist was a normal 16 year old high school kid, a bit of a nerd who lived with grandparents who one day get's bitten by a radioative spider and starts to develop strange spider like trates. He went from being nerdy Peter Parker to your Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman. Many attempts to bing the character to the screen failed, such as the awful 70s Spiderman Tv show and even a Japanese version called Japanese Spiderman. It wasn't until 2001 when Evil Dead director Sam Raimi signed up for a movie version that we finaly got to see spidey swing into action the way the comic books showed. With advances in technology we were able to witness Spidey swinging through the city of New York, Fight the evil Green Goblin and almost get the girl. This was something fans had been waiting to see most of their lives and it paid off too, Spiderman became one of the most successful films of that year. The cast was also pretty spectacular with Toby Maguire playing Spidey, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, The criminally underated James Franco as Harry Osbourn and the awesome Willem Defoe as the Green Goblin. The cast work very well together and Maguire plays Parker very well. The script by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) encompasses about 20 different editions of The comic into one 2 hour movie and this is done very well. We get an origin story of how Parker becomes Spidey and how Defoe becomes the Goblin. Raimi's direction is nice, Not since 1990's Darkman has Raimi made a truely epic action film, although he hasn't changed his style that much, there are still touches of Evil dead in the film, The hyperkinetic fight scenes, Raimi's Olds mobile, and The chin himself Bruce Campbell makes an appearance, in 2004 Raimi returned for Spiderman 2 which became a case of the sequal surpassing the original when Spiderman 2 became a smah hit, he returned again for Spiderman 3 which unfortuately ran into studio interference and because of this was panned by critics. It still made Healthy Box office though.

DOG SOLDIERS

Every once in a while the U.K will though out an exceptionally good horror movie, 2002 was no exception, but this year they gave us 2, 28 Days Later and this, Dog Soldiers. Ive chosen his because because i find it the more enjoyable of the two, anyway onto the film. The film was the feature debut of Geordie Genre fan Neil Marshall, who decided that there weren't enough Werewolf movies out there, and quite rightly 2. What Marshall gave us was quintisentially British gorefest with a very dark sense of humor to boot, The film became the sleeper hit of 2002 and launched Marshall as a director to watch. Dog Soldiers concerns a squad of soldiers sent to scotland on training manouvers only to get thrust into a battle with local Werewolf pack. They then find out that a special forces unit are using them as bait to hunt the wolves. The film comes down to a battle between humans and lycans in an old farmhouse. The Best thing about the film is not the gore or the action but the script, The dialog the characters spout, with lines like 'if little red ridinghood shows up with bazooka and bad attitude, i expect you to chin the bitch'. For all the dialog there are some very good nods to genre films in ther like An American Werewolf in London and The Matrix. The success of Dog Soldiers allowed Marshall to make his next film, The Descent, a dark serious Claustraphobic horror that gained critical praise and his Mad Max meets Escape From New York mash up DoomsDay that didn't do aswell. His next film is a violent roman Epic entitled Centurion that shoud be out this year.

and my worst film of 2002 is....

ROLLERBALL

John 'Die Hard' McTiernan's abysmal remake of the 1975 James Caan original makes my worst film because it is so badly made that it makes Ed Wood look like Hitchcock. Not only did they kiddy-fi the story, the second half of the film is shot in ****ing night vision, so you can barely see anything that happening. The cast is a strange one too. With the likes of Jean Reno acting against Shockingly bad Chris Klein, hell Chris O'Donnell would have made a better choice and he ****ed up Robin. This is just a mess of a movie and should never have seen the light of day. Truly truly awful.

Well Labbers that's it for Part one, join me next week for part 2. So until then like i always say....Keep watcing the screens...Peace Out.

PEDRO'S 2010 GENRE...

HOLA...it's 2010 and time to look at some upcoming genre movies. Here are my picks for what seem to be the most interesting....

PEDRO'S 2010 GENRE PREVIEW

KICK-ASS

This is my first pick of 2010, a comic book movie with a difference. The difference being, no super powers and they're kids. No this is not a Disney movie, it's an adaptation of the Very adult comic book by Mark Miller Creator of WANTED, From the trailers it looks to be very foul mouthed and extremely violent with some nods to popular superheroes. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) who co-wrote the screenplay with Jane Goldman (Stardust) who just happens to be Jonathon Ross's wife. The film stars Nic Cage and Mark Strong

THE BOOK OF ELI

Next up is a bit of post-apocalyptic action for you, The Book Of Eli, from the directors of From Hell, The Hughes brothers comes this tale of a Lone man who must fight his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that is said to contain the secrets to saving man kind. From the trailers, this is shaping up to look pretty good with a great cast the includes Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman.

THE CRAZIES ( Remake )

Another year, another Romero remake, this time from director Breck Eisner (Sahara) and starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell and Written by the writer of The Machinist. From the teaser Trailer, this is actually looking pretty Good. And as this is being released during a conflict over seas just like Romero's original (Vietnam) Maybe we'll get to see the anti-war undertones in this as we did with the original.

REPO MEN

Next up is a Gore drenched Sci-fier starring Jude Law and Forrest Whiticker, that follows a team of 'repo men' who reposes human organs if the owner can't afford repayments. At first this sounds abit too much like Darren Lyn Bousman's Repo: The gentic Opera, but after viewing the trailer, this is a completely different kettle of fish. this looks like an balls out action sci-fi thriller if you ask me.

PREDATORS

Next up is Predators, a return to form for the once loved alien hunter who chased arnie through the jungle. After the failed attempt by Paul W.S Anderson to bring AVP to the screen, Fox has finally greenlit the spec script that Robert Rodriguez wrote in 1994 for them. Although he is not directing, he is producing. The Film is being Helmed by Nimrod Antil who brought us Motel horror Vacancy, while the cast is outstanding...It features...
Adrian Brody
Topher Grace
Alice Braga
Danny Trejo
and Lawrence Fishburn.

INCEPTION

INCEPTION is Christopher Nolan's follow up to The Dark Knight and features Leonardo De Caprio and Ellen Page. The plot has something to do with the mind, but from the teaser trailer, the visuals are outstanding, like a cross between the matrix and 24, I think the only way to truely understand the plot is to actually view the film. The entire film has been shot on The IMAX system too.

LEGION

LEGION is described on imdb as...'An out-of-the-way diner becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race. When God loses faith in humankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity's only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner with the Archangel Michael'... that synopses alone get me really exited, The film stars Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid. The Teaser trailer looks very cool with shots of angels holding semi-automatic weapons. This is one film i am looking forward to.

These are my picks for 2010. Also this year sees the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street remake....which looks a bit pooh.

till next time...Keep watching the screens.....peace out:rockon:

THE DEATH AND RE-BIRTH OF A SUB GENRE

BY PEDROMONKEY

There are many different visions of the end of the world. For example, we have Nuclear Holocaust,
Bio-logical Warefare, Natural disasters, asteroids/comets, the Ozone layer. But one that seems to get a bad rap concerns the dead rising from the graves to feast on the flesh of the living, oh yes people I'm talking about the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. A sub-genre of Horror movies that has always been the kind of
outcast with in the Horror stable, the retarded brother of slasher films and monster movies, the sloth to slashers Fratelli family (goonies reference) if you will, it was never taken seriously. How could
people believe that the dead could return. Well it's more plausable than you think. Ancient Voodoo is said to be
able to revive the dead with help of a 'Bokor' a Voodoo Scorcerer,it is said that a 'Zombi' would remain
under the control of the 'Bokor' as the dead does not possess a will of it's own. Many horror films
of the 1930's that dealt with zombies used the ancient art of voodoo as the practice for returning the
dead to the living. The 1932 film staring Bela Lugozi and directed by Victor Hugo Halperin called
WHITE ZOMBIE capitalised on themes that were printed only three years previously in a book by author
W.B Seabrook entitled THE MAGIC ISLAND (1929) but it was the writings of horror Author H.P Lovecraft
who first brought about the idea of uncontrolable dead in his Herbert West: Re-Animator stories. But it wasn't untill
self employed New yorker, living in Pittsburg, George A romero, that we were treated to a new vision of The undead, the
crazed flesh eating monsters that we love and cherish today. The shufflers, who will stop at nothing to feed on the flesh
of the living. That film was the low budget, Genre defining 'Night of the Living Dead'. Romero removed the Voodoo theme and
replaced it with a virul one, Where the corpse of the recently deceased returned from the dead by infection. This sparked of an
entirely new Sub-genre of horror movies...The Zombie movie. When Night came out in 1968, it was shown at midnight showings only and
due to it X rating it was not allowd to be advertised to a wide Audience. It did however garner a cult following and has since been recognised
a Classic piece of cinema history. Because of this, there were many imitators, mostly originating from Europe. Spain gave us
TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD (1971) that was followed by three sequals, they also gave us THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHERSTER MORGUE (1974), set in the lake district
of the U.K. The U.S also capitilized on this with films such as Children shouldn't play with Dead things and Shockwaves. But it wasn't untill
1979 when George Romero returned to the genre that we truely did get the ultimate Zombie Apocalypse film, that film was hugely
imfluencial shocker DAWN OF THE DEAD, an epic end of the world scenario where the living dead had be come so overpowering that the
almost outnumbered that of the Living. From 1978 onwards, things started to change, Italy decied that they needed to jump on the
band wagon that DOTD started and churned out movie after movie, all riffing on Romero's Ideas, some now refered to Genre fans as classics
include Lucio Fulci's ZOMBI 2, THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, the latter three forming his 'gothic' trilogy that also borrowed
heavily from the works of H.P Lovecraft. There were others too. Marino Girolam's ZOMBIE HOLOCUAST (AKA DR.Butcher MD), Jean Rollin's french shocker The GRAPES OF DEATH and his
1981 nazi zombie epic ZOMBIE LAKE, Jess Franco's OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES (1981) and Umberto Lenzi's NIGHTMARE CITY (1980) were the staple of early European zombie shock cinema, The latter, Lenzi's
NIGHTMARE CITY being the first appearence of the so-called running zombie. Italy and France gave us some good films and some terrible films. But it wasn't untill 1981's EVIL DEAD that america
had re-entered the zombie genre, That same year ALIEN creator Dan o'Bannon gave us his own spin on the living dead, in the cult favourite DEAD & BURIED (1981) a film that twisted
Romero's vision into something completely different. Three years later O'Bannon would give us the horror movie classic that was
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, A sort of spoof on zombie film cliche's, where the " braaaiiinnsss" stigma came from. ROTLD spawned two sequals in the 80s and early 90s, neither had anything to do
with O'Bannon. John Carpenter joined in the fun with his pirate/ghost zombie flick THE FOG (1980), But it wasn't untill the return of Romero in 1985 for DAY OF THE DEAD, that we actually had a
full on zombie apocalypse again. This film focused on two groups of people, Scientists and military, grouped together in an underground bunker. The Film Broke Boundries with it
unbelievable Gore effects courtesy of F/X maestro Tom Savini. The film, although not lucrative box office managed, like the previous two, to gather a cult following, because of this, critics now
consider the film a classic along with NIGHT and DAWN. 1985 also saw the release of RE-ANIMATOR, an Adaptation of H.P Lovecraft's Herbert West stories, by first time directing and producing duo
Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna. The film starred Jeffrey Coombs as Herbert west and was quite successful, it was a darkly comic slice of a splatter platter that spawned two sequals. The EVIL DEAD also
returnd in 1985 with EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN, a sequal come remake of Sam Raimi's original EVIL DEAD film, This one intergrated comic slapstick timing with outrageous gore and became a successful hit, this was
followed by the less gory threequal ARMY OF DARKNESS in 1993. Looking back 1985 was a good year for the walking dead, such classics came from that year. The last of the great films from the 80s came
courtesy of Fred Decker's NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, an amalgam of many different genre's that included 1950s sci-fi b movies and the Romero Envisioned zombies. The catalyst for turning people into Zombies came from
alien slugs that burrowed into the brains of people. A theme that would carry over to 2006's SLITHER. There was nothing of any real merrit until 1990 when after the problems with copywrite issues with
NOTLD, Romero sat down and banged out a screen play for a remake of his debut feature, this time with the intention of copywriting this screenplay as apposed the original that ended up in the hands of the
Public Domain. It was directed by his regular F/X guy, Tom Savini, which because of his skills in creating monsters, showed us the best example of the living dead to date. A few more followed in the very early days of the
1990s that included RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART 3, more serious than the previous two and the last real Italian Zombie flick, DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE (AKA CEMETARY MAN) and LORD OF THE RINGS director Peter Jackson's Gore soaked
splatter fest BRAINDEAD (1992), A film that has never been matched on the gore front. From 1993 onwards there were basically no zombie films. The Genre was Officially Dead.

So we roll around to 2002 and Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) releases a low budget, shot on DV, film entitled 28 DAYS LATER, a film that uses a virus that turns people into rage fueled killing machines. While most people say that
the 'infected' are zombies, Danny Boyle and Writer Alex Garland both refuse to call them that, due to the fact that they're not dead. 28 DAYS became a huge hit world wide and unintentionally brought about a rebirth of the Sub-genre.
Many films followed including BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR, SHADOW: DEAD RIOT, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 4+5, UNDEAD OR ALIVE, MORTUARY, ZOMBIE HONEYMOON, But in 2004, two films would become the highest grossing films of that year. The first being the
Remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD directed by music vid kid Zach Snyder, a film that lost the shufflers of the 70s and 80s and gave us incredibly fast angry zombies. The film was Viceral an downright frightening in parts, and the second being the
spot on spoofery of Britain's SHAUN OF THE DEAD, from the creators of cult channel 4 sitcom SPACED. The film was riotously funny and also pretty gory. The film Contained several nods to DAWN'78 and is said to be a companion piece to that film.
The following year Romero returned once again for a 4th installment in his saga of the living dead that continued with LAND OF THE DEAD, a modestly budgeted studio picture with named cast, it touched on the themes of class. Unfortunatly it didn't recieve
box office that Univeral was hoping but made back it's money on DVD, making it the most profitible Romero movie ever. 2006 saw the release of SLITHER, from the writer of the DAWN remake and TROMA vet, James Gunn, it was mildly successful. The following year
Danny boyle produced the sequal to his 28 DAYS LATER...tentivly titled 28 WEEKS LATER, directed by Spain's Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of spanish language thriller INTACTO. 28 WEEKS, like it's predecessor became a global hit, loosing the DV Cams and filming on
32mm instead. It showed a desolate, arrid London. Romero once again, only this time 2 years later returned for his Reboot of his living dead saga DIARY OF THE DEAD. The film gained critical acclaim but failed to make any box office. This however did not deter Romero who is set
to return in 2010 with SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD. We have been quite lucky in the firt decade of the new millenium, we've been treated to a new variation on the zombie myth, we've had our maestro return twice and we have the next 10 years to look forward to.
So i ask you this!....is the zombie dead or is it living? for me it's like the resurrection of Christ...you can put him to rest but he won't rest for long....

so i leave you this my DEADHEADED friends....keep watching the screens....PEACE OUT :)

It's that time of the year when we look back at the films that have graced the screens in 2009. This year has been a fantastic year for Genre movies which make a change from previous years. This year we've had awesome Sci-fi with the likes of District 9, Moon and Terminator Salvation, Some Descent horror remakes like My bloody Valentine to original horror movies like Trick'r'Treat and the Hills run Red. There has also been some Duds this year with the fourth installment of The final Desitination and Twilight: New Moon. So in honor of the fast approaching new year i look back at the best of 2009 in my opinion. So hold on to your hats and enjoy this look back at the wierd and wonderful films that have graced our screens and dvd players over the last 12 months...

PEDROMONKEY'S TOP 10 OF 2009!!!!!!!

So here we go. At N0.10 is......

10. GRAN TORINO

The final acting role of Clint Eastwood is a fantastic swan song, as Clint plays grizzled Korean war Vet Walt Kowalski, not only is this film at times heart breaking it is also darkly funny, so because of this it gets my no.10 position in this list.

9. TAKEN

Taken is a film that came from nowhere and became a huge hit. the film stars Liam Neeson as a retired CIA operative who's daughter gets kidnapped by Sex Slave traders in france, this sets Aslan off on a mission of revenge against these men while he frantically searces the city for his daughter. A pretty straight foward plot, but that's only one part of this film, The others are the brutal fights and shootouts and Liam Neeson playing against type as a badass Jason Bourne type character. This is one of the highlights of 2009 and a complete surprise. that's why it gets No.9.

8. OUTLANDER

WHAT'S more intriguing than jesus Vs Vikings, well this film is that film, a cross between predator and Beowulf, staring Passion of the christ's James Caviezel as kainan an alien who crashlands in viking era Norway while transporting an evil creature known as a Morwen across the galaxy. what follows is Kainan teaming up with the local viking horde to track down and kill the morwen by combining Viking age weaponary with futuristic alien weaponary. This film is totally bad ass, vikings and aliens....

7. DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM + CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE

The problem i have with the number 7 slot is that i couldn't decide between D13:ultimatum or Crank 2 so i decided to do a joint No.7. Two massivly adrenaline fueled fight fests that at the end of the day are just sit down switch off entertainment of the highest caliber. check them both out.....

6. G.I JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

I know I know, what on earth is a summer blockbuster doing on your top 10 list pedro?, well it's simple, i abso-****ing-lutely loved this film, It's the most mindnumbingly awesome film i've seen, sure it's not going to win any oscars but hey, it's G.I joe. i loooove this film....anyone who's red my review can see how awesome i thought this film was.

5. THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123

This is a late Edition to the list, this is a very, very good, re-imaging of a 70s crime classic, here's why i loved this film. 1. John Travolta. he owns this film, he's back on Face/Off form, playing a character that's not that far removed from Castor Troy. He kills without remorse and has a very foul mouth. 2. Tony Scott's direction as usual is very good but at least this time he's lost the stooooopid jump cuts 3. Brian Helgeland's script is very good, he's the man responsible for Mel Gibson's Awesome revenge flick and point blank remake Payback and 4. it's all set in realtime. very cool crime movie.....

4. DRAG ME TO HELL

This was my horror film of the year, Sam Raimi returns to the genre that made him famous. and my god is it a return. As with the evil dead films Drag me to Hell has a fair amount of Slapstick violence, and floating demons, but it's the perfomance by Alison Lohman as the lead that i found facinating. she was cast after juno actress Ellen Page dropped out and i think she has done a better job than Page would have done. i just loved this film and i hope that after Spiderman 4 Raimi comes back to horror again.

3. MOON

Moon is the type of film that only come around every ten years or so, a completely original genre movie that has a good story, good acting, good direction and is very involving, it keeps you glued to the screen. Director Duncan Jones's debut is a clever sci-fi tale of a man who thinks he's going mad while being the only man on the moon but it turns out to be something all together more sinister. Press Reviews had stated that this film belongs up there with 2001, Solaris and Silent runnings as thoughful engrossing Science Fiction. At the core of this film is Sam Rockwell, an actor who i have detested since i first saw him in Galaxy Quest, but after viewing his phenomenal Performance in this i am more than willing to view any of future films. A Brilliant film from a director to watch who is coincidentally David Bowie's Son, Highly Recommended.

2. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

Quentin Tarantino's Quasi Remake of Enzo G Castellari's 70's Nazisploitation movie is remarkable. A Truely marvellous film from start to finish, it's violent, Emotional, Funny and has one of the most evil characters since Harvey Kietel's Bad Liutenant in the despicable Col.Hans Landa a coniving german officer known as the 'jew hunter'. I've got a review up for this so i wont. go into much detail but this would have been my No.1 film if i had not recently viewed the next one....

http://www.cult-labs.com/forums/blogs/pedromonkey/342-pedromonkeys-dvd-review-corner-part-2-4-dec-09.html my review of this film.

So we come to my number 1 film of 2009. A Truely astonishing slice of Sci-fi that should be viewed by everyone. My No.1 film of 2009 is.....

1. DISTRICT 9

THIS IS MY NO.1 FILM OF 2009. A crazy movie, a gory movie. infact im not gonna say anything about it except watch it or....

...those FOOOKIN' PRAWNS are gonna get you.

this film is truely amazing....

---------------------------------------------
Well there we go, That's my top 10 of 2009. only 365 days left until my top 10 of 2010. Here's looking forward to 12 months of cinemania.

Untill next time, keep watching the screens and have a happy new year....peace oy:rockon:

Ive decided that with the reviews ive written actually have nothing what so ever to do with the actual dvd, so from now on it's just gonna be Pedromonkey's Movie Review corner. This will basically be indepth reviews of the films that i have watched recently, be it Action, Horror, Sci-fi etc...

So welcome Laddles and Jellyspoons to the all new

PEDROMONKEY'S MOVIE REVIEW CORNER

I have been mulling it over and have come to the conclusion that most of us have probably already seen Transformers 2 and Terminator salvation so im not going to review them. As the Damage Depot is picking up speed im going all the way back to 1982 for a nostalgic review of one the coolest films ive ever seen....

FIRST BLOOD

Aahhhh! the 80s, what a great decade that was, wasn't it....i was born in the eighties, 1983 to be exact. One year before i entered this world a small film starring Sylvester Stallone was released...that film was FIRST BLOOD. Stallone had made a few films prior to this including the triple Oscar wining Rocky and it's first two sequals, then Nighthawks, F.I.S.T and WW2 footie movie Escape to Victory, but it wasn't until 1982's First Blood that Stallone confirmed his status as an action hero. He came before Schwarzenegger, before Willis and Lundgren and Van Dammn, he was the original 80s action man, sure Bronson and Lee Marvin were still churning them out but Stallone brought more of a bruteforce to the
genre. Chuck Norris was killing 'em first, but never achieved the status Stallone ever did.

So when First Blood came along with it's gurilla warfare chase plot, with Stallone as the battle scarred vietnam vet John J Rambo, who just discovers his best friend has died from cancer, He's ready to blow, but when he attempts to enter a small town he get's vcitimised by the sheriff...it doesn't take much to push him over the edge. Rambo Escapes from the sheriffs office and comandeers a dirt bike speeding through the town towards the forrest that surrounds it with the sheriff in hot pursuit.

What proceeds is a 1 against 100 type guerilla war with rambo who has switched on survival mode and finds dispatching of cops an easy chore. The pentagon get wind of this and send in Rambo's old commanding officer, Col. Troutman. He keeps trying to warn the sheriff that Rambo is unstoppable and that they would not win, but does the sheriff listen?......NOOOOO!!!

The film ends with Rambo comandeering a national guard supply truck and re-entering the town where. armed with an M60 mounted machine gun which he ably manages to carry around, proceeds to shoot the shit out of the town. He blows uo a gas station and has a face to face with the ruthless sheriff out to stop him. The film ends with Rambo breaking down in a monologue about the harsh brutal times he spent in vietnam and the friends he lost.

Onto the cast.....

John J Rambo is played of course by Sylvester Stallone, who after the success of Rocky once again proves he can actually act. He's Tough, Unremorseful and full of hate and fear. He's just a man at the end of the day and hsi portrayal of the tortured war hero is intense and honest. This is a Highlight of Stallone's career to date...

As Sheriff Will Teasle, Brian Dennehy, is ruthless, relentless and obssessed with cacthing Rambo, a role which he plays all too well, When you think of Dennehy, you forget that during the 80s he was a big box office draw staring in hits such as F/X: Murder by Illusion, staring opposite Brian Brown, Coccoon,
Silverado, Best Seller and Gorky Park with the late Lee Marvin, this guy was big. He excells here in one of his first main roles.

Then there's Richard Crenna as Col. Troutman. Rambo's Former commanding office, although the role isn't exactly big, Crenna manages to pull of the weary old officer who trained the lost killer and knows all to well what he's capable of. There are some other well known faces including future CSI:Miami actor David Caruso, Twin Peak's Chris Mulkey and Miami Vice's Michael Talbot. The supporting acts all manage to hold the film in their own way.

The direction by Ted Kotcheff, helmer of dead body comedy Weekend at Burnie's, is good, it flows well, the establishing shots of the town and the cold mountains that surround it are breath taking and i imagine that it would look extra ordinary on Blu-ray.

The Script by Stallone, David Morell and Michael Kozoll, is tight, the dialog is good and the final monologue, Which im guessing was written by Stallone is heartfelt and upsetting.

This was a film where as the three sequals were 'movies'. It's just sad that after the realistic brutality of the first film, the rest descended into OTT bodycount counting Braindead Action movie, i say this but i still love the bloody things.

well there we go....that's my Review for First Blood, a film i remember very well from my childhood and a film that will never be matched again. Im not going to rate this but i'll leave you with this quote...

"let it go...just let it go. or i'll bring you a war you won't believe'....till next time....peace out:cool:

The third big release of next week, is a comedy that has been hailed as the most successful American comedy of alltime. It took $44,000,000 on it's opening weekend, The film i am refering too is......

THE HANGOVER

Okay, Comedy, that's a term that is thrown about quite a bit, and most of the time the film is unfunny, take a Will Ferrell film like SEMI-PRO a film so devoid of any humour that it is painfull to watch and a travesty that is is classed as a comedy. When i think of comedy, i think of Monty Python, I think of Blake Edwards, comedy that is actually funny, comedy that makes you laugh out loud.

You see the problem is that with american comedy's of now, every thing is the same, Fart jokes, dick jokes and other such sexist remarks. British comedy is more reserved, better written and generally better directed. Take a film like In The Loop, written by political saturist Armando Innannoucci, even though the plot is a bit ropey, some of the dialog is hilarious, some the remarks that come out of Peter Capaldi's mouth are indeed laugh out loud funny, this make me wonder why America can't take their time to actually come up with good jokes. Now if you look at Adam Sandler's 90s output, that stuff was funny, Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison were some of the best comedies to come out. Now look at his output for the last 10 years, excluding The Longest Yard becaue that was pretty good film, his stuff is generally Meh, but luckily the new millenium has braught along a new writer/produce/director in the form of Judd Apatow, a man capable of writing well writen comedy dialog and good characterisation, you can see this in his recent output such as the fantastic KNOCKED UP and FORGETTING SARAH MARSHELL which he produced. So every once in a while you will come across a Comedy that is clever, has good characters and well written comedy. This Brings me to the third big release of the week...the day after comedy...

THE HANGOVER

The film starts with the groom and his soon to be brother in-law getting fitted for tuxedo's. This introduces us to two of four main characters, then we meet the third and fourth.
They are played by National Treasure's Justin Bartha, Midnight Meat Train's Bradly Copper, The American office's Ed Helms and rising comedy star Zach Galifianakis, who steals the film as the grooms soon to be brother in-law, a slow dimiwited loner, who makes some of the stupidest cock-ups. The Four men have very good chemistry, they bounce off each other very well.

The start of the film is a bit of a letdown, it's not that funny, all that changes when the Hangover sets in. Our guys have gone to vegas for a bachelor party, Alan, The grooms bro in-law, slips some "Roofies" into their drinks thinking it is Ecstacy, they down a shot and the next thing we cut to then next day. The hotel room is trashed, there's a stolen tiger in the bathroom and the groom is missing. The three remaining friends head off on a quest to discover what exactly happened the previous night and where the groom is, this involves a stolen police car, a visit to the hospital, a random baby, a naked gay triad and an incredibly bizarre cameo from former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

The film becomes more enjoyable as their quest continues because everytime they discover a clue to what happened, things go from bad to worse, The comedy is clever, yes there are the obligitory wank jokes and sex jokes but its not as abundant unlike some movies. The direction is crisp, the dialog is good and the delivery is tight, Zach Galifianakis comes out with some surreal musings and sings a very odd Cartman style song about best friends. there is also a very good homage to RAIN MAN. Director Todd Phillips' previous films have been mixed, he made the very funny OLDSCHOOL, the pointless STARSKEY + HUTCH, and the shockingly bad SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS, so THE HANGOVER comes as a surprise, it's not the greatest comedy ever made, that would be LIFE OF BRIAN, but it's definately worth a look. So on reflection i ask you if America can make decent comedy films, why don't they and why do they keep giving Will Ferrell Material......

Not the masterpiece it was made out to be but not a complete waste of time....

Pedromonkey's score.....3/5 good but no Python...

Next Review is HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE....so stay tuned,,,peace out!!!

And now it's time for Part 2 of this weeks Dvd review corner, Today im gonna look at Quentin Tarantino's follow up to last years lackluster DEATHPROOF.....

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

The first time i heard the name Quentin Tarantino, i was 11 years old, that was when his second film appeared in theaters amid a hail of controversy due to it outbursts of graphic Violence, that film was Pulp Fiction. It was 1994, 1 year before i was due to go to high school, now i know like pretty much everyone else that Dogs came out in 1991, but i was only 8 and still obssessed with my G.I Joe figures. I remember this because my mother took me to town to do some christmas shopping and we walked into Virgin Megastores and right infront of me was vhs box with a picture of a group of men silouhetted agains the white case with blood splattered across the cover and the words Reservoir Dogs empblazend over the blood.
I looked at my mum and i asked her if i could have it and being only 11 years old i was told no. cut to three years later, im now 14 and the previous night, C4 were showing From Dusk Till Dawn, now i knew my parents had recorded it so i decied to fake being ill to get the day of school, so at 10am when the house was empty i went down stairs, found the tape popped it into the VCR and my entire world changed, i had never seen anything like it before, You could say that Dawn introduced me to the Horror genre. The closest i'd ever gotten to watching a horror film was when my dad decided it would be a good idea to show me Aliens at the age of 9. That was a bad idea, i had nightmares for days. Back to 1997 and i discover True romance, that film introduced me to crime cinema, the next year was Reservoir Dogs, Pulp fiction and Jackie Brown, three films that i believe made me into the movie mad maniac that i am to day, after Jackie Brown Tarantino made nothing for 7 years then in 2004, at the age of 21 i hear that Tarantino as announced that he would be making his first film since 1997, an epic martial arts bloodbath called KILL BILL, i had no idea who the shaw brothers were, what lady snow blood was and knew of David Carridine only as Cane from the T.V series Kung fu and knew Daryl Hannah as the mermaid that Tom Hanks fancied in Splash.

Now i will go on record as saying that Quentin Tarantino, unintentionally got me hooked on genre movies which inturn has led me to this site, the wonderful Cult-labs.com, and this brings me to the reason for todays blog because his 8th film, entitled INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, gets it's dvd release on monday 7th of december 2009, and what can i say about this long awaited film.....WOW!!!

Now this film has been in the making since Jackie Brown, it's taken him 13 years to finally bring his "masterpiece" to the screen and boy does he do it in style. The film starts with a Frence Farmer outside his house chopping wood, in the distance is a Nazi motorcade, the Germans pull up to the house and a German Officer steps out and introduces himself, The man is Lt, Hans Landa, played by german actor Christophe Waltz, a Performance that basically steals the movie, this actor is a revelation and i do beleive that because of this film he will definately gain more attention, anyway back to the film, what follows is a twenty minute conversation between Landa and the Farmer, 20 minutes of pure tension as he searchs for hidden Jews, yet he know the farmer is lying but wants to make him endure the pressure he's willing put upon this poor man, the scene ends with an eruption of gun fire and the escape of a young Jewish woman called Shoshanna, we cut to an open courtyard, a line of young jewish Americans are stood to attention as Brad Pitt enters, mustach and strong texan accent, he tells them that their mission is to drop into france as civilians and cause as much hurt and death to the Nazi's as possible, These men are the Basterds of the title.

Now i don't want to give the entire plot away so from here on i shall tell you of some really stand out scenes.

Firstly is a rendezvous in a french basement tavern that includes a game involving, a double agent, two of the basterds, a british spy and a suspicous SS officer, this scene starts of quite jolly, people drinking, laughing and having fun then BAM!! serious tense conversation, that ends in a hail of gun fire. A fantastic scene set in a restaurant between a Shoshanna, a german private called Fredrik Zolla and Goerbals, that ends with shoshanna sat alone with Hans Landa, the fear and tenstion on the young girls face is almost unbearable. This is a very difficult scene to watch becaise Landa is such and evil basterd. And the last scene is the finale set in the cinema. i won't say what happens but i will say that if this did happen in the second world war then Eli Roth's Character would be the most important person of the second world war.

Now onto the cast. The cast for this film is outstanding when western audiences have never really heard of many of the actors.

first off id Brad Pitt, ridiculed by movie geeks the internet over because of the teaser trailer, now Pitt is an exceptionally good actor, look at David Fincher's Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt is Fantastic in the Role of Lt Aldo Raine, the leader of the basterds, a man with a thick Texan accent who is if truth be told a bit of an idiot, yet Pitt manages to pull of the seriousness and Deadpan comedy his role requires. He is very good. Next we have Christophe Waltz as Col. Hans Landa, a small man but very ruthless a bit like Ronald Lacey's Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark, he brings a menacing evil to the role and as i stated earlier complete steals the movie, a role that won him the best actor award at this years Cannes Film Festival. Then we have the wonderfuly beautiful Diane Kruger as the double agent, German film star, Bridgette Von Hammersmark, She is very good in her role as a sort of demi femme fatale. Adding a bit of genre to the film is Hostel director Eli Roth in a role many people thought was a case of he's me mate and im sticking him in me movie, sort of agreement, but Roth is acctually pretty good as the Informous "Bear Jew" Donny Donowitz, the Basterd who like to club Nazi's to death with a baseball bat. Then there's rising British actor Michael Fassbender as Lt. Archie Hicox, the british agent sent in to the join the basters. He's very intelligent and speaks Germanic and lastly we have Shoshanna herself played by beautiful french actress Melanie Laurent, i am not familier with her work but after watching her in this i am intrigued to search out her previous movies, She brings an innocence to a role that would have been sorely missed if a big name hollywood actress had played the part.
There are also other actors in the film that are recognisable from Mike Myers, Rod Taylor, B.J Novak, Samm Levine, Julie Dreyfuss and a certain mr Samuel L Jackson as the narrator.

Okay we've covered a little history of Tarantino and the standout moments and cast now onto the writing and the direction....

Firstly the script, I like many people managed to read the script online before seeing the film and i managed to read the entire 162 page script in let than 2 1/2 hours, and at the time it was the best screenplay i'd ever read, the way QT writes is just so fluid and his dialog is very very well written, the only problem i had was that the narrative was a little over place, a problem that was corrected when he eventually started filming. There are alot of dialog heavy scenes that are expertly written that while you watch the film you'd think it was the actors speaking without a script. The direction is crisp, the cinematography is outstanding and you can definately see how far Tarantino has come since the days of Reservoir Dogs, is he a master of cinema? Not yet but he's almost there, is this his masterpiece? yes, it's his Goodfellas, his Schindler's list, His Godfather part 2, and to the people who say " i didn't know it was a remake", it's not, the only thing these films share is a title and a men on a mission plotline, the rest is pure Tarantino. I will leave you with a warning though, this film is 85% in different languages, so you will need to read subtitles, this was not an issue for me but that should not stop you from watching this film, infact please see this movie......

Pedromonkey's score...

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS - 6/5

The next review will be The hangover....stay tuned....

G.I JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

As i have just had the news that at least 4 members of staff have stoodpidly been given the week off and i have to work like a slave, i've decided to start Pedromonkey's DVD Review Corner this week....so i bring you

G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

If like me you were born in the early 80s and were male chances are you would have come across a cartoon and toyline called ACTION
FORCE, this was the UK title for the afformentioned G.I JOE, a cartoon so unbelievable badass that Transformers and Thundercats were considered lame (don't get me wrong Thundercats was the bomb when your 4 years old) The team of G.I JOE was made up of different military personel from around the globe, created to battle the evil force of THE COBRA ORGANISATION, led by the insane Cobra Commander. (you still with me) COBRA was a ruthless terrorist organisation that had there hands in everything from cloning to space exploration, the JOE force were sent in to stop them, led by Gen. Hawk. Hawks second in command was Duke followed by Flint, these men were integral to stopping Cobra' plans for world domination....The cartoon series ran from 1985 to 1986 and racked up an impressive 85 episodes. It was brought back in 1990 for a 39 episode run but never truely recieved the viewing figures that the original series pulled in during the mid to late 80s.

Toy company Hasbro released a huge line of action figures and vehicles that were posable and had a large selection of characters and weapons. As a child, i myself had amassed an impressive 102 action figures and about 198 plastic guns, most of which got sucked up the hoover....this brings me to nearly 20 years later. Im 26 years old, but my mental age is around 9 so when i found out that a movie based on G.I JOE was being made, i felt all nostalgic...i jumped onto the internet and frantically searched for information on this so called rumor and discovered a promo photo of a character called Snake Eyes, the black suited ninja that never spoke...and guess what?
it looked exactly like the Snake Eyes from the Cartoon. well i can tell you, i was giddy with joy, i had dreamt of this day since i was but a child, a movie based on my most treasured childhood memory of television based entertainment, so as it gets released in time for christmas i can tell you after watching this movie, that i sat through the 113 minute run time with a huge smile on my face. something i have not done since i saw Shaun of the Dead at my local cinema.

The Rise Of Cobra is directed by Stephen Summers, a man many movie geeks hate, not as much as Michael Bay but quite a bit, personally i think the man has made some pretty entertaining films from Deep sea creature comedy DEEP RISING to THE MUMMY, infact three of the actors from the latter appear in This film.

I will not go into the plot but i can tell you a few things that made me fall in love with this rediculously OTT action movie. To start, we have a super powered pulse pistols capable of blowing a man half way across the room, The insanely georgous Sienna Miller, dressed in black, Christopher Eccelston trying his hardest to do a scottish accent while trying to disguise the fact the he has a very prominent Manchester broag, A massive multi-layered underground base which is the Joe's HQ, a massive underwater city which is Crobra's HQ, Gunfights, swordfights, ninja's, commando's, A man with a silver head, Accelerator suits that makes the wearer of said suite almost indestructable, a pretty decent car chase through the streets of Paris, the list goes on.

The cast for a film this rediclulous is outstanding, even the not-to-funny Marlon Wayans is good fun as a character called Ripcord, Denis Quaid (a persnal fav of mine since the awesomeness of INNERPACE) plays the leader Gen. HAWK, and suprisingly Indie moppet Joseph Gordon Levitt as Cobra Commando, is very good in a role the requires him to wear the breathing mask of Darth Vader from most of the movie. The Ninja's a played by Star Wars actor Ray Park as Snake Eye's and A Bittersweet Life's Byung-hun Lee as the white Ninja storm shadow. The main actor in this film is Channing Tatum, an actor devoid of any character, who manages to be not only excrutiating to watch but also way to young to be playing the part of Duke. This film will never win any oscars, but it wasn't made to win any, it was made to make money from people willing to see France get eaten by tiny little nanobots, so as you can tell, this film absolutely does not and never will take irt's self serious, so as a study of film making techniques, is this film worth viewing, No but as a shut down, switch off movie, that wants to cater to the small 6 year old inner child in all of us, is it worth spending 113 minutes sat in front of it....ABOSO-FREAKIN'-LUTELY.....

So on that all that's left to say is...YO JOE!!!!!

G.I.JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

pedro's score..............4/5, entertaining as hell

Next Review is Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterd.....look out for it.....
