A young woman hitch-hiking is picked up a by a man in a 4x4, who drives her into the woods and forces her to suck his knob. She manages to call the police but before the police get there he blows his load in her face and then knocks her unconscious and plants drugs on her. She is arrested and sent to the notorious ‘Prison Island’ which is ruled over by the depraved Miss Steel (Lina Romay) and her equally sadistic guards.

In this prison women are abused, forced to urinate into bowls (with Lina shouting 'Show me your river!'), used a sex toys by Steel and her cronies and new male guards are forced to prove they have what it takes to work there by being taken from behind by the prisons resident gay guy.
The girl’s father, a wealthy businessman, offers a trio of mercenaries $1 million to break his daughter out and bring her back alive.

A love letter to Jess Franco, Angel of Death 2 (aka Women Behind Bars 4 – Escape from Prison) is filled with many references to Franco’s work; The casting of Mrs Romay for one, the prison is situated in the middle of a tropical island, the women are placed in Cell Block 9, there is a character called Dr Morpho (played by director Bethmann), women are whipped and forced into sexual acts by those in charge, wild use of the zoom lens, hell Bethmann goes so far as having Franco himself in small role.

Chock full of hardcore sex (gay and straight), urination, and some graphic torture scenes with some nifty sfx (courtesy of Olaf Ittenbach); Angel is a moderately entertaining exploitation film. If you liked Franco’s Barbed Wire Dolls, Sadomania, Women Behind Bars, Women on Cell Block 9 etc you will probably like this if not you are probably better off looking elsewhere.

German splatter fans should keep their eyes peeled for director Andreas Schnaas in a small role as ‘The Butcher’.

DVD:
The DVD I have is the limited (only 500) edition ‘Export Cut’ released by Simple Movie (in one of those oversize hard boxes). The transfer is non anamorphic 1.85:1 and looks as good as a modern low budget film can. The audio is in German with optional English subs.

There are no extras.

The film was previously issued by Simple Movie in a four disc set, featuring different cuts of the movie. I don’t have this set so I can’t comment on it.
