Pupi Avati: The Man Behind The House With Laughing Windows

Posted 14th November 2012 at 03:09 PM by iluvdvds@Cult Labs

When it comes to cult Italian horror films, a few notorious names instantly spring to mind. From Lucio Fulci to Ruggero Deodato, Dario Argento and Mario Bava; there’s no doubt that these directors are some of the best names in cult Italian cinema. But with Shameless Screen Entertainment’s upcoming release of one of the greatest and most atmospheric gialli, The House With Laughing Windows, what better time than now, to look at the man responsible for this eerie thriller; Pupi Avati. Having directed...

So Sweet, So Dead (1972)

Posted 12th May 2010 at 07:04 AM by Philleh

Rivelazioni di un maniaco sessuale al capo della squadra mobile.
Camera Obscura.

Roberto Bianchi Montero, father to the infamous Mario Bianchi, has gone somewhat unsung in the digital age. Whereas his spawn has gone on to achieve some notoriety, Bianchi senior has still yet to find his place in Euro-cult history. Born in Rome on the 7th December 1907, Montero made his directorial debut; as Roberto Bianchi, in 1943 with comedy Gli assi della risata. A jack of all trades, Montero...

Fulci's Murder Rock

Posted 17th May 2009 at 06:07 PM by Sam@Cult Labs

From the annals of DVDisgo and DVDresurrections

Murder Rock

You've got to hand it to those crazy Italian exploitation directors, they knew how to churn out a watchable rip off of mainstream cinema's hit movies in double quick time. Conan The Barbarian inspired numerous spaghetti-fantasy movies like Fulci's Conquest and D'amato's Ator series. Dirty Harry kicked off a spate of right wing fantasies in which...

Meeting Dario...

Posted 2nd May 2009 at 10:59 AM by Neon Killer

OK so I'm an aspiring Horror Director; have been making Short Films since I was 10. To cut a long story short, a few years ago I decided to attempt a homage to my beloved Giallo genre. That was SLASH HIVE (aka SIX DEATHS IN A WASP'S EYE);

which you can see here:

...We screened it around the place, various festivals, even got a plug on XFM by Alex Zane, who really liked it.

SLASH HIVE was shot in one day on bugger all money, so the...

Sleepless (Non Ho Sonno)

Posted 27th April 2009 at 01:20 PM by Philleh

Before Non Ho Sonno (A.K.A Sleepless A.K.A I Can’t Sleep), Dario Argento was suffering some serious verbal abuse from both fans and critics after the catastrophe that was Phantom of the Opera (1998). Few people will disagree with me when I say that it truly was the lowest point of his career. Some have said that since Opera Dario has been in an ever declining spiral, with failure after failure that began with his collaboration with George A. Romero on Two Evil Eyes. Argento-lite effort Trauma,...

More Eurotrash weirdness...

Death Walks at Midnight

A Great Example of the Italian Giallo horror genre that flourished in sleazier European cinemas during the late 60s/early 70s. A fashion model is drugged as part of a publicity stunt and while tripping out witnesses a nasty murder involving a masked man with a spiked glove. When her story is published she finds that the evil fiend is now stalking her and taking out her friends.

Typically stylish but nonsensical...

Short Night of Glass Dolls

Posted 23rd April 2009 at 09:09 AM by Philleh

Can you imagine being mistaken as a corpse? I don’t mean in a Saturday morning hangover/comedown stylee. I mean being found fully dressed in some shrubs, eyes wide open with your heart beat so faint that any beat would not register on the best heart monitoring apparatus the 70’s had to offer? You can hear fully what people are saying around your lifeless body, but you’re unable to communicate, you’re trapped alone in your thoughts and unable to prevent a thing.

Doesn’t sound...

Case of the Scorpion's Tail

Posted 22nd April 2009 at 05:46 PM by Philleh

NoShame Films, I believe, are the company responsible for the recent acceptance of Sergio Martino as a major talent in Italian exploitation: He’s now being mentioned in the same breath as Argento, Fulci and Bava. It’s quiet an achievement for a small label, dedicated to not just exploitation but Italian art-house pictures like Marco Bellochio’s Devil in the Flesh all the way back to Victorio De Sica classics. To think a company held the Giallo up with such esteemed classics is a touching thought....
