I'm kinda sick of having to use the family BR player when there not in the house. As such I need recomendations on which BR player to get, but with certain conditions. *Cheap! I'm am only a student after all. My budget should be anywhere between £40-£60 but am willing to go over. *Reliable. I dont want it packing in over time. *Region Free. This one's flexable, but it would be nice. Thats about it, im not all down on the technical side of things (aspect ratios, sound systems etc) so advice on those field will also be welcome. Any recomendations im more than happy to take.

Toshiba BDX 1200. Paid £65 for mine but can be bought from Richer Sounds for £50. Firmware update makes it Multiregion for BD and DVD.

Toshiba BDX1200 I got one for £50 from Richer Sounds just to play Region 1 BDs. For the money it is an astounding machine. Seems to use a very nice upsampling circuit - DVDs look excellent on it (at least on my telly!). The new firmware is really easy to install too. |

I'd also suggest the Toshiba BDX1200 player although, and I'd have to check to be sure, I think the lens on my machine is buggered as blurays seem to stutter and skip frames when playing. Like I say, I'd have to check with more discs but it's not looking great.

I really need to pick one of these up so I can finally play my Evil Dead 2 BD that I've had since November

| Strange, mine had a similar glitch on certain discs, all Region B, but doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Those that were a problem included Drive, Devil's Double and Kill List.

| The only one of those I have is Drive but I did have problems with it. It was on specific parts of the film too. The only other film I watched since was Melancholia which also had issues. I'll have to try it with other films. Kinda glad to know it's likely not just to be my player.

Another vote for the Toshiba from me as well. Excellent machine; lovely picture quality even with DVDs. A big step up from my old Samsung and that was a highly rated £300 machine just a few years ago. If you can't get hold of the Toshiba, you might want to look at Philips and the lower end Sony machines, which also offer great value for money. The Sony should even come with You Tube and BBC iPlayer built in. Basically, these days there is no need to risk a cheap 'off brand' player, as all the major manufacturers now offer cracking players in the £50-£60 range. |
