Default New SFX horror special

Hello gents

First off, apologies for just popping up here when I have something to plug. Secondly, thanks to Almar for letting me do my pimping.

I look after the reviews section at SFX, and if you've noticed that we have a fair old number of horror-related reviews, that'll be because I'm a fan of the genre - it's the thing we cover that I'm most knowledgable about. And I've just got a chance to indulge that interest by doing my first stint as a proper editor, putting together a horror-themed special issue of the mag.

It goes on sale on Wednesday and you can find full details of all the contents ion the SFX website so you can decide whether it's something you might like to buy - it comes sealed in a card wallet, but I'm a firm believer in full disclosure! (Sadly the forum software tells me I can't post a direct link because I haven't made 15 posts yet, but if you google for SFX magazine it's on the front page at the moment - or you can click on "latest issue" down the side)

Rick Melton contributed some artwork, and Calum Waddell (whom you'll probably known has done documentaries and sleevenotes for some of the Arrow releases) has written a fair few things for it too. I've tried to make it the sort of horror magazine I'd really like to read, because there's nothing out there that quite lives up to the perfect horror magazine that exists in my head. If it's a success, I'm hopeful we will do more.

Anyhow, this is probably more than enough pimping... if you do see it in WH Smith and some cheeky beggar has taken one out of the box, do consider picking it up and have a browse!

Thanks for your time.

Just to add my tuppence and say this is well worth picking up. If genre fans support this release it will bode well for future horror specials from Future and, more to the point, it's a bloody good release that Ian slaved over (including weekends!) for months on end.

(And it goes without saying that the monthly SFX is worth your pennies too!)

As I was saying to Ian this morning we could do with more horror magazines in the UK so fingers crossed this does well. I'll be interested to see what people on here think of it - I love the web and reading breaking news and checking images online but a good horror mag is still very much something to enjoy and I think a lot of us on here enjoy physical products - for instance the Dawn packaging.

There's also a discipline to making a magazine that is to be appreciated - the selection of material, editing to produce great copy and putting time into design that will shine off a page so I think it's important we support good physical media. Where the web can come in is though allowing feedback to help produce even better mags that we can treasure over the years.

Anyway all getting a bit carried away here but I hope this project succeeds.

I've just checked out that link and WOOOO! that sounds excellent! I'll definetly will be picking this one up, no question about it!

I couldn't agree more with you too, Almar, there are not enough horror magazines in the UK, the best one I can think of being Gore Zone. We really do need some. I'm sure almost everyone on here would subcribe to a really good montly horror magazine.

Really looking forward to this. I'm a fan of SFX anyway (active in their forums too) so Mr Berryman doing a horror special should be great, his love of horror really comes through in his reviews.
