I adore all four series of AWP (or 'AufPet') but imo the initial Germany-based saga remains the best effort. The second outing is well worth repeated viewings too and while the latter series weren't quite as entertaining there's still something there to enjoy imo. I think my fave members of 'The Magnificent Seven' are probably level-headed unofficial leader Dennis Patterson and gentle giant 'Bomber' Busbridge. Of course, you gotta love 'Jack The Lad' prototype, Oz! The hilarious scene in the second series when Jimmy Nail's timeless character kicks in a pub jukebox for playing the wrong record creases me everytime. "What's this??!! I didn't put that on!!!!....Aga bloody doo!" I've seen the two '80s outings umpteen times over the years and could never tire of watching 'em. Gloriously un-PC TV and special mention must also go to Bill Paterson and the late James Booth as crafty criminals in the above entry. Great performances from these two renowned thespians. Many years ago my mother actually bumped into Tim Healy in a local filling station and received a kiss off the veteran actor. |

[QUOTE=Splatterdragon73;129368] I've seen the two '80s outings umpteen times over the years and could never tire of watching 'em. Great performances from these two renowned thespians.[QUOTE] Ali Fraser and Kenny Aimes are the names of the characters of the above two. I love the first two series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and have seen both far too many times for my own good. It's hard to seperate the two because the writing is superb in both and they still had the full cast of characters. IMO they are the UK TV highlight of the '80s. So many funny scenes and characters, but it goes beyond that, every part of the series had been polished to perfection. One of my favourite scenes is when Kenny Aimes gets Vicki (Ali Fraser's girlfriend) to have lunch with him and they are reading the menus. Vicki says, "Rape!?! Well, I knew these Spanish were forward, but that's a bit strong, isn't it? To which Kenny replies,"No, Vicki, that's Rape'(E with a hyphon). It's spanish for monkfish!

It was established that working class citizens did actually have to seek a wage overseas for real due to the Tory government's inability to provide a pay packet for it's own people. So it's safe to say that the first two immortal AWP outings definitely struck a chord with early '80s audiences who could sympathise with the trials and tribulations 'The Magnificent Seven' were going through both in Germany and back home. There truly are a magnitude of amusing moments and the cast gel so well together. There's also no doubt i would be in the market for a BR release of AWP. Another side-splitting snippet in the first series comes when Neville and Oz almost catch Dennis and Dagmar together at the local swimming pool. Later on at the local bar Oz admits: "Mind, i wouldn't mind humpin' that Dagmar." A disgruntled Dennis sneers in a sinister manner "What?" Oz replys "Cor, she looked nice in that bikini didn't she? Big bristols and nice strong thighs!" An enraged Dennis then makes a hasty exit! Last edited by Splatterdragon73; 02-20-2011 at 09:18 AM. |

Pure class!!! I,like yourselves can watch these over and over again, especially the 1st two series. Series 1,whenever Barry was on his bike they always played a mouth organ!Brilliant idea and it just seems to fit in so well with his character! Quote "oz man,oz,he was only going for a tanndorin chicken!" I have actually been to the Barley Mow has its only about 45mins from me. Its in a small village called Red Mile.It has changed quite a bit,but you can still tell it was used in the 2nd series. We even parked our vw camper van where Dennis parked his when the lads were playing football! Its actually in Nottinghamshire, just off the a52 and not derbyshire. Nice to visit if you dont live to far. |

| I remember watching the first two series on TV when they first aired. A few years later when I realised my by then Mrs was also a fan we bought the VHS series packs. We have since upgraded to the DVDs due to the tapes getting some serious wear and tear. The third series for me was OK but missed some of the earlier magic and I'm yet to catch up with the forth. ![]() The thing I liked most about the series was that all the characters gelled so well together. Jimmy Nail was such an obvious standout as Oz but Dennis and Barry were my favourite characters. When you think about it all seven were pretty much stereotypes but it didn't matter. The quality of the writing and the acting made them endearing. I still prefer the first series overall but only just.

I don't make a distinction between the two. I prefer to see them as two halves of a whole. This is my No.1 choice for the HD treatment and a good cast commentary track before we lose anyone else. P.S. Could one of the mods change the title of this thread to Auf Wiedersehen, pet please?

One of the better episodes in the second series features the boys hitting my neck of the woods and visiting Ali Fraser's nightspot 'Cannibals Club'. Oz manages to pull a girl wearing tight attire on the dance floor and when he asks "How do you get into those pants?" the female rabidly responds "A Harvey Wallbanger might help!"! Bomber and Barry's reactions are most amusing upon hearing of said rib-tickling reply. Later on in the same installment who can forget the side-splitting sequence when the gang show up at Fraser's swanky Darras Hall residence. The crafty criminal gives the guys a demonstration of his exercise regime and struggles with both hands to operate a section of weight apparatus. Man mountain Bomber has a go and easily manages to negotiate the task with only one hand! Fraser's dismay at Bomber's display is hilarious and it has to be said some of Bill Paterson's facial expressions during this whole segment are priceless. |

How about the bit when Dennis is up in Ali Fraser's office while Oz and 'Big' Baz (Ali's henchman) are waiting outside. Baz gets the call-up to the office and Oz follows, thinking Dennis is going to get a doing. Oz promptly opens the door to which Fraser says," Who are you?". "Never mind who I am, I know all about you and if you lay one finger on him (Dennis) then you'll get that!" and he smashes his fist into his palm. Ali gives the nod for Baz to steam in, to which Oz simply turns round and headbutts him to the floor followed by a few swift boots. "He'll not be any more trouble!" says Oz triumphantly, to which Dennis replys,"What are you talking about, he was only going for a chicken Tandoori!" Priceless.
