Default A Serbian Film - Coming to UK Cinemas 10th December

Cult Labs members will doubtless by aware of the impending release of perhaps the most controversial movie of the last few years.

A Serbian Film comes to UK cinemas from 10th December.

Here's the press release and poster. Find out everything you need to know about the film on our...

“TRAGIC, SICKENING, DISTURBING, TWISTED, ABSURD… ONE OF THE MOST LEGITIMATELY FASCINATING FILMS I’VE EVER SEEN.” – SCOTT WEINBERG, FEARNET.COM.

One of the most talked about films of the year, A Serbian Film comes to the UK riding an international wave of notoriety that has seen it overtly praised by some, the Montreal Gazette called it “A tortured film from a tortured collective psyche… a near-perfect portrait of torment.” - 4 Stars, and yet utterly condemned by others.

Scripted by Serbian horror film critic Aleksandar Radivojevic (screenwriter of the award winning ‘Tears For Sale’), the debut feature from director Srdjan Spasojevic is an allegorical, taboo shattering film that “follows French cinema pioneers Gaspar Noe (Irreversible) and Virginie Despentes (Baise-moi) in destroying the status quo regarding on-screen violence and sexuality” (Tim Anderson, BloodyDisgusting.com). A twisted tale of an adult film star’s horrifying descent into an almost unimaginable hell, Radivojevic himself describes the film as “a diary of our molestation by the Serbian government… It’s about the monolithic power of leaders who hypnotize you to do things you don’t want to do.”

Milos (Srdjan Todorovic) is a retired porn star leading a normal family life with his wife Maria (Jelena Gavrilovic) and six-year old son Petar in tumultuous Serbia, trying to make ends meet.
Aware of his problems, Layla (Katarina Zutic), a former co-star, introduces Milos to Vukmir (Sergej Trifunovic), a
mysterious, menacing and politically powerful figure in the porn business who wants Milos to star in his latest project and is willing to pay him a fee that will provide financial
support to Milos and his family for the rest of their lives. The only condition is that Milos signs a contract insisting on his absolute unawareness of the scripted scenes they are about to shoot.

Encouraged by his wife to accept the job, Milos turns up for the first day of shooting and is immediately drawn into a maelstrom of unbelievable cruelty and mayhem devised by his employer, the ‘director’ of his destiny.
It soon becomes apparent that Vukmir and his crew will stop at nothing to complete his insane vision. The only way for Milos to escape the living cinematic hell he’s entered and to save his family life is to sacrifice everything to Vukmir’s art – his pride, his morality, his sanity, and maybe even his own life.

Confrontational, shocking, uncompromising, with hints of dark humour and absolutely unforgettable, A Serbian Film is “a well crafted, immensely indecent smut-slasher” (Variety) featuring a “remarkable performance by [Srdjan] Todorovic” (Fangoria) and is an affecting and thought provoking work of cinema that ranks alongside the likes of “Requiem For A Dream”, “Videodrome”, “Irreversible” and “Antichrist” as one of the most provocative films of its time.

A Serbian Film (cert 18) will open at UK cinemas on 10th December 2010.

They have to balance that knife edge between freedom of speech and the needs of Daily Mail Middle Britain, who will doubtless be disgusted and censorious.

Hopefully, the cuts won't create ambiguity like they did in Straw Dogs, where slices to a rape scene served to make it look as if the victim begins to acquiesce and enjoy the ordeal. That's the problem with cutting for content as opposed to looking at the whole work. The BBFC has certain limits of taste that can't be breached, regardless of whether the film as a whole uses the offending images to move the story forward or raise a social point.

Re the BBFC, Sam I could not have put it better myself.

The BBFC only work to the guidelines given to them by Government so if you want it changed the you have to lobby your MP to change the law.

We, along with Germany, have the most censored film releases in the free world.

If you want that to change then Vote & Lobby!

I rarely see the point of cuts, regardless of what I think of this movie. Using Robocop as another example; by cutting the ED-209 "glitch" and the shooting of Murphy, the BBFC made the scenes far more horrific. When I finally saw the complete version, I found that the two scenes had less impact. The BBFC made the ED-209 scene far more serious. The uncut prolonged shooting of Mr Kinney is far funnier as it it just so OTT.

One of the things I've being doing while we promote A SERBIAN FILM is to look around the web and try and get some insight into what people are saying about the film. Unlike many extreme movies which remain in a cult movie ghetto, it's found it's way onto a huge variety of non-film discussion spots.

Here's my thoughts on the ONGOING CONTROVERSY

WoW looking at some of the comments, abuse and swear words that are on mumsnet I wonder what has to be said to actually get a comment deleted on there! and some have been!!

Makes this site a VERY friendly place!!!!!

Also Totalfilm gives it 2* which is the same as Skyline and 1* LESS than Paranormal Activity 2
