Thumbs up Joe D'Amato's Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals ('77) ...

... holy joe d'amato takes a stab at the cannibal genre and gives us this dirty gem ...

... for the unsophisticated emanuelle fan this movie will have far too much gore and far too much violence, thus the alternate title trap them and kill them makes sense as a more appropriate title ... and as a warning. a title card at the end of the opening credits sequence says: "this is a true story as reported by jennifer o'sullivan." jennifer o'sullivan? who's she? there's no jennifer o'sullivan in the film that i noticed. this adds to the mystery of this wicked little movie. leads me to believe this film wasn't originally an emanuelle film and the reporter called emanuelle was originally this jennifer o'sullivan and the name was changed at some point to cash in on the emmanuelle craze of the '70s. curiously, emanuelle takes a backseat to the gory action once the story takes us to the amazon jungle. i've seen a lot of things on film but i've never seen a nipple-carving (!) before ...

... emanuelle and the last cannibals is fantastic, audaciously repulsive, x-rated grindhouse trash; a sometimes slick, somtimes wonky, always corny patchwork of over-the-top exploitation sequences. and of course d'amato really showcases his talent and his forte for erotic filmmaking in the various sex sequences shot in his trademark majestic style ...

... i wonder whatever could have possessed mr. d'amato to bring the lovely emanuelle into such excessively brutal proceedings? i guess that's what the 42nd street audience wanted back in the grindhouse heyday ...

I haven't seen EATLC since the mid to late '90s and i must catch this sweaty sleazefest again sooner or later.

I've got the AWE and SS DVDs together with an apparently unofficial uncut U.K. release from years back. Obviously, this variant was never issued intact on the shelves but complete copies did allegedly manage to sneak out through various 'alternative' sources. I believe this elusive edition contains an NTSC version on one side of the disc and a PAL print on the other and features lovely Laura Gemser fending off a Snake attack on the cover.

I seem to recall Donald O'Brien's death scene and to be honest i prefer the film's U.S. title Trap Them And Kill Them to the movie's original, more salacious sounding moniker.

I'm a big D'Amato fan but I thought this was awful.

I agree Loop's and im a big Cannibal film fan.
It is better than Cannibal Terror and Franco's input to the genre though.

It sure is! So much so that it was mugged by producer De Angelis for his later cannibal/zombie effort Zombie Holocaust!

I'm overdue a re-watch of this, first viewing didn't really win me over and I'm a huge D'Amato fan.

It was just Nico Fidenco being lazy and not bothering to do a new socre for Zombie Holocaust.

Laura Gemser is nice but I like Susan Scott more.

Really? I just thought it was a monkey-saving tactic on behalf of De Angelis! Ha.

Fidenco is credited on both films but I wouldn't be suprised if De Angelis just paid him to use the EATLC score instead of paying him to do a new one.
