Italian Crime Recommendations

In reply to Mr 420’s request for some Italian Crime recommendations - There are loads of great titles, though a lot are unavailable. Check these out for starters:

Almost Human (was available from NoShame in the US but is OOP – it’s available in Italy under the title Milano odia: la polizia non può sparare and is English-friendly).

Violent Professionals – There’s a UK disc of this on the Vipco label

Roma Violenta – this is available on DVD in Europe. Can’t remember the label off the top of my head.

Tough Ones / Rome Armed To The Teeth – this is available in Austria (either on the Eyecatcher or NEW label, can’t remember which for sure)

Street Law (US, Blue Underground)

I have the chance to buy Deodatos The Terminators on video, but the guy is wanting £40 for it. Is it worth it? How would you rate the film?

It’s a great DVD too. Actually, that reminds me of at least two other must have Italian crime films that are on that label:

Milano calibro 9
La mala ordina

Both are directed by Fernando di Leo and are essential.

Completely essential. It was Di Leo's films that got me hooked into Italian Crime. I remember getting excited like a girl watching Calibro.

I have these on the Raro label and I agree - they're both fantastic.

Really getting into di Leo's films these days. Is Rulers Of The City worth a punt? It seems to get mixed reviews.

RULERS OF THE CITY is alright, not as good as the other two. THE BOSS is great, if you've not seen that. KYDNAP SYNDICATE (with Luc Merenda) is also worth seeing. The gritty dramas TO BE TWENTY and NAKED VIOLENCE are very good too.

I'm not gone at all on LOADED GUNS and COLD BLOODED BEAST.

MANHUNT (aka LA MALA ORDINA) and CALIBRE 9 are definitely the two to check out first :)

Stelvio Massi's THE LAST ROUND is worth a look.

Yes it is. It's a good, solid film that.
