Thought I'd start a thread where you can post about your local cinemas (funny stories, film presentations and the different events they have on etc.). What have Showcase Cinemas done to their website? Before you could see a page showing the films coming soon in UK cinemas (some of which won't get shown at all Showcase cinemas). But now I can't find a Coming Soon section. They're going to be showing soon four of the earliest Bond movies at some Showcase De Lux cinemas. Unfortunately the closest one to me is at Derby. I did go to a screening of From Russia With Love at a Cineworld in Wolverhampton a few weeks ago, only to be told when I got there that the film hadn't yet been delivered to the cinema, and that they wouldn't get it until the 6 pm screening. It was only being shown on the one day, and I wasn't going to go back again later on that day to see that Bond film. I did want to see an old Bond movie at the cinema but I wasn't going to go back again later that day. Every Monday at my local Odeon cinema (formerly owned by UCI) they have something called a Mystery Movie Monday screening, similar to the Mystery Fright Friday I went to three years ago at the same cinema. Instead of four back-to-back mystery horror movies it's one mystery movie from any genre, from either the past, present or future. I hadn't been able to go this year because "24" was on Monday nights, and I wasn't missing that on it's first showing. It finished nearly three Mondays ago, so I decided to go last Monday. The lights, instead of dimming went to darkness in an instant. A copyright warning followed, followed by the BBFC certificate for the film shown. The film shown was Sin City. Only seen some of it when it was shown on BBC1 last year or the year before. It was a good film and it was very stylish, like I had read about the film. People's attitudes towards the regular showing of Bond films on TV will very likely dictate whether an old Bond movie is ever shown again at an Odeon cinema, or at a Showcase cinema, but I'm hoping that one day Licence to Kill will be shown at an Odeon cinema. As it shows mainly mainstream movies from the present it is very unlikely it will be shown. I wish now I had gone to see it when it was released in UK cinemas in the summer of 1989, even though I was underage at the time (the film was given a 15 certificate by the BBFC). I've taken one of my sons to see goldfinger and the recent showing of from russia with love, and its great to see these old flicks back on the big screen. Im a regular cinema goer and have one of those cineworld unlimited cards, although im a bit pissed off at them recently as after upping the monthly cost from £11.99 to £13.50,they are now charging you an additional £1.50 when using your card if you want to see a 3d film, which they did not do before. To be honest,i dont know how anyone can afford to go to the cinema at all these days, with prices constantly being hiked up,and the price for food and drink in the foyer is ludicrious!! If you cant be bothered with sitting in an auditorium full of yapping teens, mobile phones constantly going off,or some dickhead who knows every scene and preceeds, rather loudly to tell his mates whats gonna happen, then go to an earlier showing(morning or mid afternoon)and its cheaper too. Still,i go for the movies, not to stuff me face. ![]() Off to see a preview showing of the hangover after work today, and, hopefully the remake of last house on the left sometime this weekend. ![]() Yeah,i still like the cinema experience for all its faults. ![]() Stirling has a new vue cinema which has been opened for about a year now,and i still aint been in it!!! It means i'd have to pay!! |

The last cinema film I saw was Gran Torino. Before that it was Superman Returns (which reduced me to a comatose state).

I went to a cinema in Wolverhampton I hadn't been to before (but had known about it for a few years) last Sunday - to see a digital screening of From Russia With Love. It was clean, quiet (no annoying kids, teenagers and adults) and the staff were polite. The atmosphere was lovely. It makes a refreshing change to know that there are cinemas which show not just mainstream movies regularly but also indie and foreign language films. Earlier this week I saw at the same cinema a French movie called Mark of an Angel, a good psychological drama. |
