BBFC stands for Big Bags of Fine Cannabis. They're so stoned and paranoid they see danger in every single frame of film they see. It's the only logical explanation. Cannibal Holocaust was passed on Wednesday, which is Big Bags of Fine Coke day, so they were all really happy and passed it virtually uncut. Either that, or it simply means Bloody Bastard Fascist C***s. There. somebody had to say it. ![]() PS: I censored myself, as the forum didn't censor the C word as I thought it would!

Well, as much as I can understand the frustration, I have to note: At least you'll be getting a halfway watchable and widely available release in the UK as the BBFC have "moved on". In Germany no distributor has dared to release the first one yet and of the sound of the 2nd one I wouldn't be surprised it the cut DVD/BD will make the BPJM's "Index B list" "A Serbian Film"-style rather sooner than later. |

I guess the gist of your post is 'thank your lucky stars you live in good old enlightened Britain', rather than Germany, which has no tolerance for horror films, even ones which are four decades old?!

Yeah, Germany don't seem to have moved on at all! Those evil films blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong, I think the BBFC are a LOT more progressive then they ever were. I guess the reason must of us despair over BBFC decisions like this is because, in the internet age, it's a futile gesture. Those that really want to see it uncut will have little to no problem doing so. It kind of makes the BBFC's work a bit redundant. Sure, casual viewers will simply see the most accessible version, but they won't care that it's cut and certainly will have no idea that the BBFC are 'protecting' them. However, the BBFC press release that made the news will almost certainly have alerted everyone to the film and that the final approved release will be heavily cut. I dunno, it all seems rather pointless these days, cutting films is a useless pasttime... A censor's work will always come undone over time, as values change and expectations alter. It kind of makes you wonder who would invest so much of their lives in work that will be undone and forgotten in year's to come. Ferman, Whitehouse etc - nearly all of their censorial efforts have now been rendered null and void. What a way to waste your life...

That's very true as they apparently tried to reflect the way society is, not the way it will be. I watched the Dear Censor... documentary a few days ago and found it extremely enlightening as it showed Ferman's tenure in a different light, with many positive aspects which tend to be overshadowed by his more silly decisions. It was particularly interesting to see the problems the censors had with The Wild One and Rebel without a Cause, which were either refused a certificate or rated solely for adult audiences - the BBFC now rate them both PG!

The thing with film is that it's immediate and subversive ideas can quickly be dispersed to the masses. Okay, so that's more of a political take on things. Nevertheless, it's undoubtedly the fact that these films contained rebellious and subversive ideas that caused the BBFC to be in turmoil, rather than actual content, as neither film boasts any particularly visually graphic material. But the ideas they contained were very unpalatable to the 'establishment' of the time. Evil youth culture blah blah blah. Can't have young people thinking for themselves or disagreeing with the established order of things! That won't do!

I know we've strayed some way off topic and this would probably be best for the Censorship thread, but the BBFC had major problems with The Wild One because they had real fears it would incite violence and reflect the 'Teddy Boys' approach to life and, just as they said about The Human Centipede II, there wasn't any scene which could be cut which would remove that, hence why they refused it a certificate and why it was banned until the late 1960s. They had similar problems with Rebel without a Cause, missing the point of the film entirely, complaining about the portrayal of Jim's parents (particularly the father) as weak and ineffectual leading to a screwed up teenager. The entire point of the film is weak and ineffectual parenting can lead to screwed up children, but the BBFC were particularly scornful about Jim's father wearing an apron and cleaning the house, something Jim actually hated in the film! Who knows, this may be a similar situation and, in five or ten years time, the cuts will be overturned on appeal or resubmission.

![]() Don't get me wrong; I'm annoyed by censorship cuts as the next best genre fan, but personally if I had to choose between the BBFC or Germany's FSK, BJPM, SPIO/JK etc, etc... I'd opt for the BBFC. ![]() At least they tend to give even the most conttroversial flick the benefit of some thinking ahead of cuts- which is rarely something you could neccesarily count on in Germany if you were trying to get a certificate for something like "Centipede"... Over here in Finland I'll very likely be also depending on an import, but not because of censorship (the only film I heard of local distributors being afraid of picking up would be the uncut "A Serbian Film" as a result of the scenes featuring children) but because of the lack of a proper market for some more "obscure" (and costly for the distributors ) genre releases due to a small population... |
