Rat cruelty is also cut from The Abyss and Sean Connery's The First Great Train Robbery.

Anyone know what was the first film to have the 'no animals were harmed making this picture' disclaimer?

It's the trademark of the AHA, which was set up in the early 40's after a horse was killed during the making of Jesse James.

Cronenberg's The Dead Zone has just been downgraded to a '15'.

That's surprising with the gory bathroom suicide scene, then again they didn't actually show him doing it just the aftermath.

I think the '15' cert is only a problem for older horror fans who can have a psychological problem with it.

To anyone my age (nearly 40) a '15' rated horror film would have been a big turn off unless it was a comedic one.
In a time when even '18' films were being cut...a '15' would come across as basically pointless.

But we have to accept now that actually the '15' is, in many cases, the same as an '18' of a few years back.
'18' films now actually have a bigger pull for me because I know that '15' certs are given to films that contain what was once '18' material and '18' certs often contain stuff that would have had the film cut to get an '18'....if not banned outright.

In many ways the UK '18' has becomes the same as the American 'Unrated' tag.
U.S. 'Unrated' DVD's are routinely released as '18' certs in the UK.

It's just a psychological thing really.
i mean that "Contamination" can go from being uncut and BANNED, to having to be massively cut to get an '18'....to now getting a '15' fully uncut is a weird ass situation to anyone of my generation!

And for us the '18' was our version (though not as intriguing and sexy!) of the old 'X'.
Somehow horror films JUST SHOULD be rated '18'!

But I really think that none of this, at all, has any interest or effect on a younger generation.
As it is Horror has never really been as strong...ever.
Because not only do classic, full blown horror films from the 70's and 80's get routinely uncut releases (even with a '15') on DVD that anyone can now get, but new Horror films often push the envelope with what they show and embrace that, now MUCH stronger, '18' certificate status.

I agree.I'm in the same age bracket as you,and when was always wary when buying the latest '15' rated Vipco release.I wasn't proved wrong either.
Back then the '18' releases, not just Vipco would have easily passed as a 15 or even a 12 today (In their previous censored state.)
