I'm not a Joe D'Amato fan, Beyond The Darkness is my favourite of his films...probably because it has a decent story, being a remake of a superb film.
I'm a fan of D'amato but I have never rated Anthro or Beyond the Darkness.

Caligula 2 is my favourite D'amato film.

I'm no fan of D'Amato either though I rate Anthro among his better (or least awful) films. Some good atmospheric scenes.

Emanuelles revenge and Emanuelle in America are my fave D`Amato`s,the (fake) snuff scenes in the latter are truly nasty and pretty convincing.

Isla doesn't even attempt to pretend to be anything other than Exploitation, Craven tries to claim the film is something else.

Perhaps my dislike is partly due to the Mainstream acceptance of Craven and the resultant attempts to clean up his early career; a tendency he is only to willing to go along with so that he is not thrown out of the club of 'Respectable' film makers.

Perhaps we should leave Last House alone now. Everyone has their blind spots and for me it is Last House.
I consider Last House a masterpiece and, like Wes Craven has said, a very moral film. I also don't think it is badly made at all, I think there is a very powerful (possibly unintentional) verite horror to it. It is one of the few horror movies to really leave me shell shocked - all I can say is that I had an extremely emotional reaction to it when I first saw it and I think it was a movie which clearly reflected the time it was made (It seems to me an attempt to recreate the horrors of taking a sentient life onscreen - as well as a reaction to the glorification of violence in mainstream cinema and the My Lai Massacre/ Kent State shootings).

It's one of my fave films to wax poetically about (it's a big part of my current PhD on philosophy and American cinema) so it's probably just a case of agreeing to disagree!

And, as someone who counts David Hess as a good friend, please don't take everything he says seriously - he's a major wind-up merchant and loves doing it in interviews.

Late Night Trains I could care less for but Last House on the Left remains, for me anyway, one of the finest horror films ever created and anything but misogynistic!

"Absurd" has a slow middle for sure (worse it goes slow just as, plot progression wise, the film should be kicking off!) but "Anthro" has a slow first 2/3rds.

The first hour is more like a Greek tourist video made by a blind man.

At least "Absurd" has some groovy kills (though "Anthro's face tearing is great) with the bandsaw death being a classic, utterly pure example of a 'plot stopping', super sadistic Italian gore sequence.

Fair enough Calum but, as someone who has been raped, I don't consider rape to be something to wind people up over.
