I never looked at Anchor Bay as a label were i'd buy a release just because it was on AB, the way I would with VIPCO or Shameless ,
Due to the sheer volume they released and the numerous complete collections boxed together I never really viewed them as a cult company.
A lot of the films I bought I did'nt realise till I got home and examined the box that they were AB releases.
They did release some cracking titles though.

Well Vips myself and Daemonia were/are members of the old Anchor Bay forum that's now Cult Movie Forums so it's no coincidence we have such a large amount of their releases. But yeah Anchor Bay were brilliant, since Starz bought them they've become more interested in crap like WAGS WORKOUT and MR. MOTIVATOR than cult horror titles. The only thing they seem to release nowadays is Evil Dead and Halloween reissues though they do have a Jason Voorhees documentary lined up for next year I believe.

Looking through my collection I see a lot that I really treasure such as the Pete Walker / Norman J. Warren / Tigon / Amicus coffin sets. AB really were the bollocks back in the day and their UK forum used to be in my opinion the best online forum around. I have very fond memories of the place and enjoyed my 2.5 years there before they closed it down .

Why did Starz move away from the Cult movie releases to concentrate on other genres when it was quite clear that AB had taken the cult titles into the mainstream , while smaller companies like VIPCO were often fighting for shelf space at the major retailers.

Was it an image thing.?
Please forgive my ignorance on the matter.

Well Anchor Bay throughout 2006 barely released a single horror DVD, their time was really 2005 and before and from 2007 to now their horror discs have been fleeting. I remember hearing that "the well had run dry" (utter bollocks I might add) and that horror discs weren't selling as well as something like an Eddie Murphy stand up comedy or a fitness disc. It wasn't a surprise when Anchor Bay/Starz decided to scrap the forum because the new owners were clearly not horror fans. I had found out a few weeks in advance that it was closing and was absolutely gutted.

I do think the sheer volume of horror films released by Shameless, Code Red, Dark Sky, Subversive, Synapse, Shriek Show, Optimum and Severin etc has shown that perhaps Anchor Bay could have continued to break even with horror releases. They obviously disagree though and funnily enough AB's sister company Blue Underground ain't doing an awful lot now but reissue older films in different packaging.

You don't ask for much, Scotland. Alright then when I find a spare half an hour I'll take a photo. I just need to find them all though at the moment that's impossible as some were boxed up and sent to my dad's house and others are in Mexico.
