Heard a lot about Russell's perf as the king though.
He's uncanny. Music biopics are a tricky business. Val Kilmer is great as Jim Morrison for instance, but the film spinning around him is ridiculous myth making which, although fun to watch, only serves to sell more burgers at the Hard Rock Cafe, rather than telling us much about the man.

The Elvis movie isn't a whitewash, there's a streak of darkness to it even if the film ends before things get really ugly in the 70s.

i think this is the only Carpenter film ive not seen to, and probably the only carpenter film to ever get a U rating.

Reminds me of The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey.

It's still a tragedy we won't hear a Carpenter/Russell commentary for this (as their chattracks are always so good), but it's a great little film, with Carpenter getting to show a side of his talents he's hardly ever been able to otherwise. Russell, as Sam said before, is uncanny.

Having said that, it would be perverse if this is the first Carpenter flick I buy on Blu Ray...

Bought the U.S. release of this not long ago, but may have to pick it up on Blu as well!

Great TV movie!

I haven't seen this either but, with Bubba Ho-Tep fresh in the memory, am keen to remedy that. It would have been great if Kurt Russell would have done what Bruce Campbell did the this Blu-ray release and recorded a commentary track in character!

It's been years since I saw those two films and they are, judged against Carpenter's other movies, pretty bad.
