Classic movies transcend generations, if The Exorcist fails to meet this requirement then isn't it failing in its status as a classic movie?

I've always loved the 2nd film but the first film has never appealed to me. I find it too gross, the language and various sexual detail. Also Linda Blair urinating? Not my idea of entertainment. The acting was good though.

I much prefer Rosemary's Baby, tamer and a lot more effective.

"The Exorcist" has lost a lot of its power now, because so many films have gone further to shock. I can easily understand why some people can't see what all the fuss was about. I've seen it at the cinema twice and it does make it a better experience. The first time the audience bought into it and it was great fun. The second time most of the younger viewers just laughed and passed comments. I think it is a classic film with only "The Exorcist 3" coming close as far as genuine horror goes, but like anything else, it just comes down to personal opinion.

Nice to see you back Angel.

I loathed Exorcist II when I first saw it but it's grown on me since. Totally different to the original and far less atmospheric (which I still find to be the original film's most powerful point) but it has some bizarre moments. What did you think of Exorcist III?

Yes Exorcist 2 was very different to the first, but I have seen some sequels which seem to be pretty much a re-run/re-hash/virtual remake of the first so the differences did help, for me anyway. I think a lot of people were disappointed in how tame it also was after the first was something of a shocker and were probably hoping for something similar. Personally I don't think 2 deserves its 18 rating today. Also it has never been shown on TV 33 years on.

Afraid I have never seen 3 past the first 20 minutes. Next time it's on I'll give it another go.

I actually need to revisit the second one daft and all that it is.Morricone's score is superb.Exorcist III is chilling, and an improvement over 2.Of the two prequels,I definetly prefer Schrader's Dominion. However, the first IMO is classic horror at it's best.

Hello Everyone, I'm Ryan, call me Ryy. This looks like fun, and I hope I make a good contribution to the discussions here. I couldn't find an intro thread

The Exorcist is one of the greatest films ever made. Options on religions aside, they do have the best stories to them. They are also very easy to identify with (would the film be as horrifying if you knew nothing of the Christian faith?).

As a matter of interest, has anyone tried watched Witch-finder General after or before the Exorcist?

The second was pretty looking and very trippy, but could of been a lot better.
The third was an extremely subtle and creepy film.

Haven't seen the prequels yet, but will.

Avoid Harlins version of the fourth & go for Dominion which is far better & avoids the unneccesary gore & the silly exorcism sequence. The third film is really creepy & George C Scott is very good too.I can see why fans of the original hate The Heretic but I've always found the film to be entertaining.

Having watched the two versions of the prequel I have to say they are both rubbish and did absolutely nothing for me. Harlin's has an action ending that makes it just that little bit more rediculous (and unintentionally comical), but neither is really worth wasting your time on.
