Thumbs down Your EX-FAVES

Everybody has a few of these.
Movies which once meant the world to you, but which - for varying reasons- lost their appeal over the course of time...movies, which have started to collect dust, which had to move from the top positions on your shelf...

Here are my ex-faves and as with passed relationships, each and everyone of them reminds me of a time and mood in my life long passed....

(In no particular order):

"True Romance"

THE movie of my early 20's, my favourite flick from '95-'99.
While "True Romance" undoubtedly has a few clever dialogues and overall great performances, I totally share Brad Pitt's views on the script (expressed in the 2 disc SE DVD), which prompted him to reject the lead of Clarence: "Some fanboy's wet dream".
Indeed, the movie's "love story" could have only been written by a nerdy first time writer with no experience of either women or reality.
While the typical Tony Scott look elevates this into surefire mainstream eye candy, it's no wonder that mainstream audiences initially didn't warm up to a tale about a geeky Hong Kong movie freak and his very unlikely love interest on the run from the mob and the cops with a suitcase full of cocaine. having them "getting away" with it doesn't exactly add any pov to the film either.
Typically selfconscious 90's movie, which looks and sounds severly outdated!

***** - ** = ***

"Desperado"

Robert Rodriguez is one hell of a director, BUT a LOUSY writer
The last time I suffered through his "Desperado", it almost made me longing after a Steven Seagal flick, because the movie is slowly, but surely running out of ideas, offering the very best scene in the first 5 minutes.
Having Steve Buscemi telling the "Desperado's" tale while intercutting the lively narration with a great bar-massacre is about as goood as it's gonna get.
The humour is flat, the characters poorly underwritten and the finale a joke.
Dull, dull, dull "hip" 90's boredom.

**** - ** = **

"Fight Club"

My favourite movie from '99-'01.

Let's face it, whatever depth this movie might have had before 9/11 got finally beaten to the ground by the recent economy crisis.
Having a bunch of whiny thirtysomethings beating each other up for no apparent reason apart from their "empty, purposeless lifes" fails to impress nowadays despite one hell ride of a performance by the excellent Edward Norton and David Fincher's conscious, but stylish direction.
Tyler Durden laments that his gnerations has "no war, no great depression" to overcome.
Well, I guess those issues have been fixed by now

***** - **(*) = **(*)

"Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting" have outlived their top spot positions in my household for many years now, featuring unlikeable characters, which you couldn't and shouldn't care less for...imho!

"Natural Born Killers"

The most selfconscious movie of the 90's and also one hell of a missed opportunity.
Thanks to the lack of any remotely sane or likeable character, the audience has nobody to care for but two murderous psychopaths.
Robert Downey jr keeps this somewhat watchable, but as a satire it's way off track - particularly from a 00's-perspective.

I never liked Natural Born Killers when I first saw it. All flash and violence but no substance whatsoever.

I'm not a fan of NBK or any other Stone films,it's like being shouted at by a first year politics student who believes their view is the only view.

Used to love "Evil Dead 2" but the last time I watched it I found it childish and slightly dull.

I used to love 'The Lost Boys' years ago. I still think it's a good film but nowhere near as great as I used to think it was. In fact, I haven't even got around to upgrading to DVD (although if I see the SE with 'The Tribe' at the right price I'll snap it up)

I've always disliked "The Lost Boys" and see it as the start of the rot of the 80s horror boom.

The sequel is terrible ,but I quite like the first though Tom Holland's FRIGHT NIGHT is better.
