Default The Island (1980) on ITV4 12/11/2010 12.30a.m.

Classic stuff with Michael Caine as a father trying to retrieve his son that has been kidnappd by a band of blood-thirsty pirates (led by the great David Warner). Well worth a watch if you are still up.

I love Michael Caine but this film is atrocious. I have the German DVD that came out on the Koch label back in 2007 - nice scope print. I suppose the film is enjoyable in a "so bad it's good" way but it's pretty awful.

Granted, its not Citizen Cain but I have always thought that it is very enjoyable on a trash movie level. Maybe my brain has finally started to go?

P.S. Did you manage to see The Black Windmill in ITV4 the other week? I remember seeing this years ago as a nipper and it spooked me out (prob because I was the same age as the kid being kidnapped). Still an enjoyable thriller and Id forgotten that Dean Wormer from Animal House was the bad guy.

I’ve not seen BLACK WINDMILL since buying the UK DVD four years ago. Don’t want to sound miserable and dismiss two films you’ve mentioned in a row but I was disappointed by it. I’m a big fan of Don Siegel (his films with Eastwood and CHARLEY VARRICK in particular), but BW didn’t live up to expectations. Maybe I’ll like it more the next time I get around to seeing it now that the initial disappointment is out of the way? That has happened before.

Dean Wormer actor John Vernon was in a few of Siegel's films. He's the mayor in DIRTY HARRY and he crops up in CHARLEY VARRICK too.

No worries bud! It's not like you are slagging off Revenge of the Ninja or Mad Foxes. I managed to see Charley Varrick for the 1st time only a few months ago and absolutely loved every minute of it. Don't suppose you would know whats the best dvd release to get?

I have the US disc of CHARLEY VARRICK but it's fullscreen. The UK disc is anamorphic widescreen. Iwas out and about with ImspectorTanzi a month or so a go and he picked one up in Fopp for £3.
