Science fiction doesn’t come more inventive than Dark City, the second film from Alex Proyas that took the word ‘mind-bending’ to extraordinary new levels.
The setting is a mysterious Gothic city patrolled by a group of peculiar beings known as The Strangers who have unusual psychic powers. Into this world steps John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), a man with no memory who finds himself blamed for a string of bizarre murders.
As he tries to piece together his past, an encounter with The Strangers leads him on a path to discover the horrifying truth behind the city’s genesis, a truth which opens up his own latent psychic powers...
Released in 1998, Dark City disappeared quickly from cinemas, but since then the film has slowly gained cult status as audiences gradually realised what a unique and visually extravagant film they’d missed. Taking inspiration from the likes of Metropolis, Dark City is a feast for the eyes that also offers an intriguing mystery with a satisfying pay-off.
