Default The Mechanic (2011)

Well, seeing as it's released very soon I figured I'd start a thread for it! It's probably the first time in a while I'm actually interested in seeing a Statham movie (other than Expendables) but it's mainly to see how it compares to the original, which is one of my favourite Bronson's. Any thoughts?

One review says "It's a modestly effective but jaw-droppingly violent picture".. like that second part there...

Sadly, I probably won't get to see it until the Blu release which, incidentally, is already up for pre-order at Play!

i love the Bronson film, i think it's Winner's best outside of Death Wish, I also love Jason Statham movies but for me the big selling point for this is Ben Foster who i reckon is one of the best of the 'young crowd' of actors after scene stealing work in 30 Days of Night and 3:10 To Yuma. But This is looking very Promising.

I don't think I've seen the origianl - although, I have seen a handful of Bronson movies (so maybe I have). I like the majority of Statham's films - so really looking forward to this one!

When I met Michael Winner I got him to autograph my dvd of The Mechanic, I though taking DW to sign would have been a too obvious choice.

Yeah definitely gonna go & watch this, I enjoy Jason Statham's action flicks. I've not seen the Charles Bronson original myself but I've seen the dvd online for less than four quid, so it'll probably end up on my 'to buy' list.

IMO Winner directed a couple of other films that were way better than his (admittedly enjoyable) collaborations with Bronson. HANNIBAL BROOKS and I'LL NEVERFORGET WHAT 'IS NAME. Brilliant films.

It always annoys me when people diss Winner. Even some of his later, shittier films (BULLSEYE, PARTING SHOTS) and still enjoyable in a brainless way.

THE MECHANIC is good though and I'll definitely see the remake in the cinema sometime during the next week but the new Clint flick takes presedence.

Well I went to see The Mechanic tonight & throughly enjoyed it. It's pretty much standard Statham fare, which you'll get no complaints about from me.

Unfortunately I've never seen the Bronson/Winner original so I can't compare but as a stand alone, it's a pretty decent action flick with some great set pieces, it kinda like The Transporter meets Leon.

Stand out performance though in my opinion belongs to Ben Foster who I thought was excellent throughout this, definitely a name to watch.

Think I'll be picking up the Blu of this when it's released.

You should check out the original, it's great...

I saw the remake over the weekend too (so much for seeing Hereafter first). I thought it was great fun. It's incredibly violent for a 15 too!

Also, if you're a fan of the original, make sure you check it out. It's easy to get a bit sniffy about remakes but this doesn't tarnish the memory of the Winner film and works perfectly well on its own terms.
