Question Your Favourite Horror Film from 1978

1978 was a year for some brilliant horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 1978 is...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Philip Kaufman

My favourite version of the oft-recounted tale of alien take over and body stealing, this is sci-fi horror gold. The casting is spot on, and the interpretation of the original 'body snatcher' story is very well constructed.

Trailer:

Runners Up:
Blue Sunshine
Dawn of the Dead
Grapes of Death
The Last House on the Beach
Halloween
Killer's Moon
Mountain of the Cannibal God
The Omen II
Satan's Blood
The Sister of Ursula

Dawn of the Dead wins hands down, with Halloween in second place. Both are classic and hugely influential films and it just shows how subjective film appreciation can be blood, if I just had to choose one, it would be Dawn of the Dead which would normally feature on my top 10 favourite films (of any genre) list.

When I posted '78, I knew Dawn of the Dead and Halloween would be fighting it out as being the most popular. Both are still excellent (even though I tend to much prefer Fulci's zombie epics over Romero's), but have never been top favourites of mine, either within their own horror sub-genres.

Easily Carpenter's masterpiece HALLOWEEN.The epitome of the stalk and slash film.
DAWN OF THE DEAD is also a corker.

Other 'belters' include

De Palma's THE FURY
Taylor's DAMIEN:OMEN II
Bido's THE BLOODSTAINED SHADOW

And mention must also go to;
Albert Band's ZOLTAN HOUND OF DRACULA
Larry Cohen's IT LIVES AGAIN
William Girdler's THE MANITOU
Joe Dante's PIRANHA
Dennis Donnely's THE TOOLBOX MURDERS
Richard Franklin's PATRICK
Jerzy Skolimowski's THE SHOUT
and
Richard Attenborough's MAGIC

Any fans of any of these?

Nice to see another fan of Kaufman's take on the classic Invasion story.

Just ordered this thanks to this thread. It seems there is a new(ish) UK release with quite a few extras, with a new green cover.

One of THE best years of horror EVER, but in the end there's no way around "Halloween", which is not only one of my most watched movies ever but also a film which I find getting better and better on every revisit!
Incidently I caught this first after "Halloween II" in the late 80's, which carries even more vhs nostalgia for me.

But what can I say? I also like those other contenders of '78....

Blue Sunshine
Dawn of the Dead
Grapes of Death
The Last House on the Beach
The Omen II

....but ol' Michael Myers is simply a cut above!
