Question Your Favourite Horror Film from 1998

1998 was a year for some decent horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 1998 is...

Ringu - Hideo Nakata

Now, the saturation of 'J-Horror' films has become almost unbearable over the last decade, but Ringu as one of the first; and although still a flawed film, is the template for a good J-Horror film, and where the formula works. There are many other successful J-Horror/K-Horror films, but Ringu and its sequels are possibly the most famous.

Using a simple premise and a lot of suspense to build the tension, and even though I don't consider it a personal favourite, Ringu works very well as a horror film. It is also a film that has spawned one of the most iconic and memorable horror sequences in recent decades.

Trailer:

Runners Up:
Bio Zombie
Blade
Deep Rising
The Faculty
The Last Broadcast - so much better than Blair Witch
Razor Blade Smile
Sphere
Terror Firma
Vampires

I really enjoyed Urban Legend in 1998, but really in a year a bit thin on the ground of quality horror i choose Dee Snider's Strangeland.
The film i feel started the craze of torture porn.

There's no contest what-so-ever for me on this one. Bio-Zombie is a fantastic film. I'd say it rivals Shaun of the Dead for title of greatest ever zombie comedy. Crazy Bee(I very nearly had this as my nick on here) and Woody Invincible could take Shaun and Ed any day of the week.

There are several I like a lot lot from 1998, but there aren't any where I can remember the first time I saw them as vividly as the film which introduced me to the brilliance of Hideo Nakata. I'd heard it was a good film and took the opportunity to record it when it was on Channel 4 (or Film4) late one night. Watching the video the next evening, I was slightly irritated by the comm commercials, but was able to fast forward through them as I was completely sucked in. This was the film which began my (and I imagine many other's) love affair with Asian horror.

Ringu

Blade was overblown and over-rated dumbass fun, Deep Rising I liked more than I probably should(! ), The Last Broadcast a splendid little sleeper and I even have a soft spot for Razor Blade Smile. I really liked Ringu, but it's over-rated, yet with each viewing I see more to like about John Carpenter's Vampires, so I'm going for that.

Ring/Ringu

It was the first Asian horror I saw (on a pretty bad Tartan VHS where I couldn't read all the subtitles), and started my love affair with non-Hong Kong Asian cinema. Also, the Sadako/TV scene just blew my mind!

Blade was a lot of fun. God how I love its bass-filled soundtrack!
