THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 09 SEPTEMBER 2011

“FEED ME, KYLE!”

"Must...be...blood..."

That’s right, yours truly is now the proud (and somewhat timid) owner of a Venus Fly Trap. A blood-thirsty, skin-crawling, flesh-eating, nightmare-making, creepy-crawly-digesting,  otherworldly satanical Venus Fly Trap straight from Homebase, £3.99. Sadly, I think it’s developed some sort of eating disorder and refuses to eat anything I shove down its mouth. Perhaps it still hasn’t forgiven me for feeding it part of itself. Or perhaps it’s still sulking after I named it Barthelomew HonkyTonk The 14th And A Half. Oh well. So, if next week there’s no newsletter, then you know I’ve been chewed into plant chow. It’s been nice knowing you. But before that happens, here’s another packed newsletter just for you!

ALL THE BEST THINGS OUT NOW!

The chainsaw killer of this film is a few pieces shy of a full puzzle.

Let’s have a look see at all the latest and greatest films that have swarmed into shops across the country this week. There’s three brilliant titles this time round. Kicking it all of, we have Juan Piquer Simón’s momentous cult slasher film, Pieces (Arrow Video: DVD). I recently watched this film for the first time not too long ago and loved it to…uh…pieces. It’s just so incredibly violent and yet so incredibly stupid. If you want a film literally gushing with gore and filled with daft dialogue and scenes as unintentionally humourous as the best of The Room then look no further than this gruesome gem! Out now, the Arrow Video DVD comes complete with extras, reversible artwork and a very interesting booklet. Nice. You don’t have to go to Texas for a Chainsaw Massacre, you can get one in Tesco now for a RRP of £15.99. If you’ve seen the film, head on over to the mini-forum dedicated to it and get chatting!

Next up, we have another Arrow Video release (horray and horrah!) for you to enjoy. It’s slightly more obscure than Pieces and is a criminally overlooked film in the exploitation field. From the Co-Writier of the incredible Night Of The Living Dead, John Russo comes Midnight – a backwoods slasher film filled with Satanic murderers and cages. Check this film out if you prefer grotty, dark and exploitative films. The mini-forum for this film will also help you decide. Also out this week is something slightly different to the aforementioned titles. An action flick! 13 Assassins (Artificial Eye) is out on both DVD and Blu-Ray for all those looking for something a little more kick-ass. This film is pretty darn awesome. Don’t believe me? Check out these reviews – “STUNNING” **** Loaded “SPECTACULAR” Total Film “BREATHTAKING” **** News Of The World. I hate to say it but, I told you so. But what do you think? Head over to the film’s Official thread and hubsite to have your say.

COMING SOON TO A SHOP NEAR YOU…

So there’s a whole 107 days until Christmas (not that I’m counting or anything), but the big day has come early! Or so it seems with all these great releases heading your way. Coming out on the 12th of this month – my mum’s birthday! – is the modern horror classic, Insidious (Momentum Pictures: DVD & BD). A film thats a firm nod to older horror films you may have grown up with, Insidious is quite the horror film. There’s a very cool competition going on at the moment for some Insidious goodies which I’ve included a little later in this newsletter. It ends later today though, so you best be quick if you fancy winning some stuff.

Rumour has it 'The Dummy' is being remade. Paris Hilton has been offered the title role.

The week after that (the 19th) we see the release of the forth Twilight Zone box set (Shock Entertainment & FremantleMedia Enterprises) on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Nom nom nom. The much adored TV series is hitting shelves again with this great set including 37 episodes and a heap load of quite simply awesome extras. Any Sci-Fi fan would be crazy to miss this one. There’s a brand new mini-section over on the Cult Labs forum to get stuck into. Including a thread with all the specs and an epic poll to vote for your fav episode of this volume. Why not create your own thread? Don’t miss out on this brilliant box set by pre-ordering here.

Have you ever found yourself thinking ‘Gee, I wish I could watch a film about some man who has a severed head’ ? Haven’t we all? Well now you can tick off that wish since the brilliant fun horror film The Man With The Severed Head (ArrowDrome: DVD) is out very soon – the 19th to be exact. Staring a certain horror icon who goes by the name of Paul Naschy, this film straight from the vaults of Eurocine is out soon all thanks to ArrowDrome. ArrowDrome? What the hell is that? Well, for those who don’t already know, ArrowDrome is the new label from Arrow with just one key word on it’s lips – ‘Amazing Value.’ Yes, I know that’s two words smartypants, but it wouldn’t be amazing value if it was just the one. ArrowDrome releases (DVD only) are a whole host of Cult films filled with extras, reversible sleeves AND booklets all for an amazingly low price. It really is madness. Other titles coming out soon include McBain (visit this to see a hillarious Walken sketch), Deep Red, Battle Royale, House By The Cemetery, Dawn and Day Of The Dead, Bay Of Blood and oh so many more! Visit the label’s section for more details.

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY…

Before I move on to all the great things that have been happening on the forum, I’d just like to say a huge thank you to Bizarre_eye@Cult Labs, Nosferatu@Cult Labs, Nekromantik, Rik and PaulD for joining me in this month’s Cult Labs Film Night with Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn. I know everyone enjoyed it; it was a brilliant night. The poll for next month’s Film Night will be up soon. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

And now the best of…

Defenders Of The Faith! \m/ \m/

Metalheads Unite! \m/ \m/ – ROCK ON! This is the thread for all you leather-wearing, stud-belted, long-haired, head-banging freaks out there who like their music hard and heavy like me. It’s great to see this thread getting more attention this week. Who are your fav metal bands? Whats their greatest albums? Rob Zombie or White Zombie? Iron Maiden or Judas Priest? Slayer or Judas Priest? Metallica or Judas Priest? Accept or Judas Priest? I think we all know the answer to those questions.

- Devil Story – Now we’re talking obscure. This European zombie film is getting all the attention on the forum this week in Reaper@Cult Labs‘ thread. Ever seen it? Look how cool that artwork is!

- ‘Big Girl’ Mix – No, this is not a thread dedicated to the muddling up of curvatious women. Calling all Prisoner: Cell Block H fans! Martin1983 needs your help! Can you help him find a certain ‘track that was available from ‘Chris’ Cell Block H Media Page’ years ago?’ If so, let us know here. Or if you have any Prisoner fan work that you’d like to share and show off, do it in the new Prisoner Fan File!

- Kill List – A thread dedicated solely to a new horror film OUT NOW! Have you seen it? What do you make of it? If plasterface‘s mini-review is anything to go by, I’m going to have to check it out pronto!

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT.

Figure out the 5 films in this puzzle and you could win Pieces!

A huge well done is in order forPrince Vajda, Drugula and Rik who each won themsleves a copy of Hatchet 2 on DVD or Blu-Ray for coming up with the most ridiculous slasher weapons in last week’s competition. Another huge congratulations go to DryJack, Nekromatik and Bigandya who managed to get themselves Midnight on DVD. I best apologise for this – the original idea was to award everyone who submitted the corect answers before midnight a copy of Midnight. Thing is I was literally bombarded with entries that I had no choice but to put everyone into a random draw. Damn, you guys sure know your film! But there’s still a chance to win Pieces – just head this the Weekly Competition and figure out the puzzle to be in a chance of winning!

And now for that Insidious competition. The Insidious Facebook Fan Page are giving away the film on DVD or Blu-Ray. All you need to do is send in your real life ghostly experiences. Ooh freaky. Head to the Facebook group for all the details. But be quick, it ends at 6.30pm TODAY!

WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE!

And now a word from BioZombie….

Hello again Grindhouse lovers, we’ve got plenty more screenings for you to discover this  week. You can see a whole Day of David Lynch, slack off for a while at the PPC and watch  giant sand worms take over Liverpool. Enjoy!

- 11th Spetember 2011 DAVID LYNCH FILM DAY Riverside Studios – Hammersmith
I’m quite sure what a whole day’s worth of David Lynche’s weird genius will do to your mind, but it’s probably good.

- 12th September 2011 CLERKS & DAZED AND CONFUSED Prince Charles Cinema – London
The very best of slacker comedy comes to London.

- 13th September 2011 TREMORS Picturehouse at FACT – Liverpool
If you like big worms (and who doesn’t) you’ll like Tremors. It’s that easy.

Cult film demands to seen on the big screen with an appreciative audience, so head over to The GrindHouse Project and give in to that demand (or else).
