Question Your Favourite Horror Film from 1964

1964 was a year for some brilliant horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 1964 is...

Kwaidan - Masaki Kobayashi

Not technically a film, but four separate stories (or morality tales) revolving around supernatural subjects. Kwaidan is so terrifically constructed, with each tale being both a visual and cerebral treat, that it just beats its equally fantastic Japanese counterpart Onibaba to the top spot for 1964.

Trailer:

Runners Up:
At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul
Black Torment
Blood and Black Lace
Castle of Blood
Children of the Damned
Crypt of the Vampire
The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb
The Earth Dies Screaming
The Evil of Frankenstein
The Gorgon
Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte
The Last Man on Earth
The Long Hair of Death - A superb gothic horror
The Masque of the Red Death
Onibaba
Straight Jacket
The Tomb of Ligeia
Two Thousand Maniacs!

Never seen Kwaidan.

I have really gone off Asian horror.

I really enjoyed The Ring, The Eye, Dark Water and A Tale of Two Sisters, then i realised all Asian horror is the same and gave up to it completely.

Ah, Kwaidan is completely different (and so much better) than all this new J-Horror/K-Horror/ghosts of children rubbish!

Although, there are a select few of the new Asian horror films that I really enjoy.

I absolutely love Long Hair of Death, I personally prefer it to the more popular Steele gothic horror from the same period; Mask of Satan, Castle of Blood etc.

CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED-superb sequel.

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH which features sumptous cinematography from our very own Nicolas Roeg.

Hammer's THE GORGON is another good 'un.....but once again,Bava comes up trumps with BLOOD AND BLACK LACE.

I wonder if anyone had seen owt like this until 1964......

THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING is another Sunday afternoon favourite.

I love the Roger Corman / Vincent Price Poe adaptations and was getting a bit concerned none would fill any of my film of the year slots, then come two great films in one year - The Tomb of Ligeia and [SIZE="3"][COLOR="Yellow"]The Masque of the Red Death

I'd have to say The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb.

A great selection of films for this year, but I'm gonna have to go with Mario Bava and Blood and Black Lace; a landmark giallo and quite possibly his finest film.

was a great year for horror because of those titles you've listed -- not a bad one amongst them. Although I went with Blood and Black Lace, I could easily change my mind to Kwaidan, Onibaba or The Masque of the Red Death depending on which I'd seen most recently!
