I started going to watch horror films in the mid-late '70s and there were some pearls that stood out but, as is usual, there were also some swine. Having said that, and with the benefit of nostalgia and changing tastes, some of the pearls were a blemished and some of the swine were actually cultured and charming... in a spill your guts all over the dinner table sort of way of course! Carrie, Halloween, Alien, and, of course Phantasm, are amongst my favourite films of all time and I would watch them again any time. I really got fed up of the constant slasher theme though and still find it difficult to keep awake during a Friday the Thirteenth clone. Maybe I'm just getting old, eh?

My top 3 are pretty much locked, Dawn of the Dead The Exorcist Profondo rosso The rest will take much more thought, the great tv movies like The Night Stalker and Duel really should make my list, might take me til june to figure it all out.

exactly what I thought when I looked at some films I liked, I'm going by the 'feel' rather than the genre tag, Alien would be sci-fi but to me it's got all the horror style covered, or a film like Martin, it's really about a 'troubled' teen but again... horror.

If you need a little more time when the deadline rolls around, it wouldn't hurt to push the deadline back a week or so.

I'm putting them in for sure. You could see them as crime thrillers, or classy slashers Plus Deep Red has that creepy walking puppet for no reason - deffo horror . . .

The 1970's, the last great decade of film inovation. 1. The Exorcist. 2. The Devils. 3. Texas Chain Saw Massacre. 4. Alien. 5. Cannibal Holocaust. 6. Last House on the Left. 7. Jaws. 8. Don't Look Now. 9. The Omen. 10. The Wicker Man. 11. Black Xmas. 12. Profondo Rosso. 13. Carrie. 14. Eraserhead. 15. Suspiria. 16. Last Cannibal World. 17. The Hills Have Eyes. 18. Halloween. 19. I Spit on Your Grave. 20. The Amityville Horror. 21. Dawn of the Dead. 22. Zombie Flesh Eaters. 23. Mark of the Devil. 24. Tombs of the Blind Dead. 25. Man From Deep River. 26. The Crazies. 27. Deranged. 28. Salo; 120 Days of Sodom. 29. Shivers. 30. Blood Sucking Freaks. 31. Werewolf Woman. 32. Phantasm. 33. Zombie Holocaust. 34. The Brood. 35. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. 36. Magic. 47. The Manitou. 48. Martin. 49. A Clockwork Orange. 50. Add one of your own.... Now, depending on how pedantic you want to be, some will say that some of the films above are not really horror films, but if we're going to split hairs then Alien and Jaws aren't horror films either and I bet they'll be near the top of most people's lists. And, besides, if you don't think getting bummed in the dirt by a toothless hillbilly isn't horrific, then you slightly scare me!! I was going to put One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest at #50 but thought that was going too far....Even if Nurse Ratchet is one of the most evil bitches in cinema history. Swop it for Play Misty for Me.
