You know that Kermode's quote was probably abbreviated from a sentence that started with "After the Exorcist..."

I suspect it derives from his list of nominations for Sight & Sound's most recent international critics' poll - where his list of ten did indeed include The Devils.

Which reminds me - at the 2004 screening in NFT1, Kermode concluded the Q&A by saying something like "And I'd just like to thank Ken Russell for making one of the greatest films ever made", to which Russell replied "Yeah! Lair of the White Worm", and brought the house down.

Well I'm really happy this is finally being released, I'm not bothered if its missing this or that or its on DVD - I've been waiting too long to get this film. I stayed away from the bootlegs and hopefully with the extras I will finally get to see this brilliant film. Thank you BFI

Well said dude... I can't think of a single other title that I've pined after as much as The Devils... I had the old widescreen Warners Maverick Director VHS and the film really is beathtaking in 'scope. I hope we see some more of Russell's 70's films soon - Savage Mesiah and The Boyfriend are fantastic pictures as well... I think The Music Lovers is out on R2 but I havn't heard any reports on the DVD yet...

Music Lovers came out earlier in the year via Final Cut Entertainment but I've not picked one up yet. Savage Messiah was released by Warner as an Archive title in the US too.

Thanks Paul for the heads up on the Savage Mesiah DVD - I missed that one, although if truth be told, I have yet to pick up one of those burn-on-demand DVDs - they always seem too damn expensive....

Incidentally, the Spanish DVD is the worst version of all, as it seems that it took the US version as its starting point and then applied more censorship - a fairly key early line, "And may the Protestant be driven from the land", is missing, presumably because it showed the Catholic authorities in a bad light.
Bad indeed.

Good news then about the BFI disc.
