Apparently there was one copy with the new releases which had just been sold and my copy in the general film section. Still, looked at another way, that's a total sell out of stock on the release date. I bet Disney couldn't compete with that.
Still waiting on Amazon but agree that high street shops have made NO effort to promote this at all. Nothing in local HMV, no sign of it in the DVD departments of the big Tesco, Sainsbury's, etc. Ok, I know it won't be a big must buy purchase for casual buyers but considering some of the crap they do have on their shelves it just goes to show how film illiterate their marketing / department managers must be. They are going to sell more copies of The Devils than the Kevin Bacon mess Elephant White!! and they are all stocking that in SD and Blu!

It was packed in NFT 1, although odly the seat next to me was empty, despite them having sold out. The film was the same as the DVD release with just those two extra bits: the rape of Christ and the femur masturbation. As far as I could tell nothing else was different. Murray Melvin, Dudley Sutton, Georgina Hale and Gemma Jones were on hand to share anecdotes, and editor Michael Madsell talked about various censorship problems. Vanessa Redgrave was unable to make it, but here daughter Joely Richardson was in the audience. As were some of the nuns. It was very interesting, and I managed to get them all to sign my DVD afterwards. Hurrah!

I'm surprised there was room on the DVD for all those signatures. I don't suppose all the nuns gave you there John Hancock as well, did they?

I realise now that my original post was a bit misleading. I didn't get the autographs of all the nuns. They were never introduced and just melted away with the huge crowd afterwards, as did Joely Richardson. I did get the five main players who were in the Q & A though, which was good.

I guessed as much – my comment about the nuns was meant sarcastically, but sarcasm doesn't always come across very well in forums, message boards, e-mails and the like.

Kudos on the autographed DVD – I imagine it has pride of place in your collection.

It would if I had room! It's more likely to get shoved in a cupboard to be honest...

Thanks for the back-up - I've been pointing this out till I'm blue in the face!

The differences between the UK cinema cut (on the BFI DVD) and the 2004 reconstruction are infinitely less than the far more pronounced differences between the UK and US cinema cuts. Or indeed between the 2004 version and what was shown to the BBFC and Warner execs in early 1971.

I think part of the problem is that people have seized on words like "restoration" and "director's cut" and have assumed that the 2004 version is much more definitive than it actually is. But "slightly extended cut" would be a more accurate description.

Yes, it's just those two extra bits. the bone thing is quite short and only suggested. The main rape of Christ moment is pretty astonishing mind. It's a real shame that's not in the movie. One day...

I took a day off work today to watch this and by God does it look fantastic!

A film which has never failed to fascinate me,and it is indeed Reed's finest performance.
I'll be watching the second disc as well shortly.
The book too is a fantastic read, well done to the BFI.

Package of the year for me so far!

Tesco??? am still amazed that i found Troll Hunter in there. Asda marginally a better chance as ive found plenty of "cultish" dvds in there over time, but are you really that shocked? The minute i heard about this release, i knew it would be a mailorder job of some description at the very least
