The Devils (1971) (Ken Russell) Discussion Thread

I watched my copy last night and can only echo what other have said. The film has never looked better and it's great to finally see the X-rated version as I'd only seen the heavily truncated R-print previously. It's a fine edition and I'm sure I'll be revisiting it again some time soon.

Upon viewing it again,those Jarman sets are just phenomenal!



Ken Russell was well deserved of the 'Maverick Director' moniker when this was released on video.

Now that I've revisited this,I'm gonna have a laff at the Spanish,U.S. cut!

I'd only ever seen this on the Spanish DVD with the American R rated cut and found the film very hard to judge. I've just finished watching this new BFI release and was amazed at what a different experience it was.

It's an incredibly intelligent, provocative and powerful piece of work, which I thought was brilliant and will watch many more times – next stop, the extra features, booklet and commentary.

I tip my hat to the people behind the restoration and for making this release possible.

The review in this month's Total Film said that watching all the extras may give you a Kermode overdose.

Kudos where kudos are due.

After watching the extras, I've actually been watching/listening to a lot of Kermode's reviews on youtube.
