Default Theatre Of Blood (1973)

Another cracking film with a mainly British cast.

What's your opinion of it?

What's your favourite death scene?

I reckon along with HOUSE OF WAX and WITCHFINDER GENERAL is Price's top performance in a LONG career in horror.

Theater Of Blood is a genuine 70's classic. Robert Morely getting fed his dogs is just one of many great moments of twisted fun. By all accounts this was one of, if not Vincent Price's favourite film that he made.

Along with Bava's Bay of Blood/Twitch of the Death Nerve, this is probably one of the earliest examples of the so-called 'body count' horror movie. I'm definitely a huge fan and I think it's an excellent horror film. Price is phenomenal as Edward Lionheart and is hammy style is perfectly suited to the material. I remember first seeing this as aprt of the BBC2 horror double-bills and I was quite surprised at just how bloody and violent it is. The 'poodle-pie' sequence is certainly a highlight, but my favourite is when Arthur Lowe gets his head sawn off in his sleep. I'd be curious to know what cuts the BBFC made to it when first submitted in 1972 - unfortunately the BBFC have no details of the cuts on their website.

Theater Of Blood gave me nightmares for years. The scene where the critic has his head sawn off during the night as he sleeps scared the living hell out of me,so much in fact that I slept with the bed covers over my neck just in case As if I thought that covering up would protect me

Possibly the best British horror film of all time in my opinion. Absolute perfection and, together with the contrasting Witchfinder General, Price's finest ever performance.

The killings of Coral Browne & Robert Morley. Both long since restored.

This is a one of my favourite brit horrors. Price is excellent and, like someone has already said, the critic being fed his poodles is the stand out moment.

Diana Rigg's favourite of all of her own films. Sadly Diana, Milo O'Shea, Eric Sykes, Maddy Smith & Renee Asherson (Hordern's wife) are the only principal stars still with us today.
