Blue Underground or Optimum?
Any recomendations?

Sobral 7th February 2012 03:52 PM

According to DVDcompare, the Optimum disc has no extras, only the trailer.
Go for the BU disc, and the BD, if you have a player.

I have the ABUK disc with the 40-page booklet, will upgrade to BD someday.

The church is in a place called Hathersage about 6 miles from Castleton and the river with the stepping stones is in Dovedale. I'm going to try and visit them later this year.

I get over that part of the world sometimes. I know Dovedale well. I'll try to find the exact spots you mention and grab some photos. I might try to make a winter trip over there soon, it should look really nice, bleak and desolate right now. If you can pin point exactish spots on google earth or google maps, that would be great.

Here's some of the Google Earth locations:

If you want a DVD version, I'd go for the Blue Underground double disc set.It may be a bit more expensive than the Optimum but it's the better option of the two. :)

platostotal 8th February 2012 05:03 PM

I've seen the ABUK dvd around, pre-owned for as little as £1.50(charity shop) worth hunting for. Will have to give mine a spin after all this chat.

Just been re-reading bumpa Christmas 2000AD prog 2012 from December.
In the new horror based strip Absalom, the titelular protagonist refers to a number of coleagues he has worked with over the years, all from populare culture that have dabbled in the paranormal.
Amongst these are Inspector Trout from the Abominable Dr. Phibes, Inspector Calhoun from Death Line, Jack Reagon of The Sweeny, and Inspector Barlow from Z Cars and affiliated storys.
Finaly came "That Irish git who was involved in that Zombie mess up in Manchester" was none other than the un-named police officer played by Arthur Kennedy in Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue.
Love stuff like that!

I was just talking to my mate today about how great this film is and that he really needs to pick it up. So how does it rate around here not just as a zombie film but as a horror in general ?

oaxaca 15th March 2015 07:51 AM

I'd rate this up there with the best of Fulci's horrors - and for me that's about as good as horror gets!

Hawkmonger 15th March 2015 10:06 AM

Oh aye. Of the Italian zombie movies i'd rate this very highly, and certainly the nighest non-Fulci one.

I'm gonna get some flack for this but I prefer it to Zombie Holocaust.

Not from me - I also prefer it to Zombie Holocaust.

Like oaxaca says, it's as good as Fulci's better zombie films.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 15th March 2015 11:57 AM

I rate it really highly, both as a piece of filmmaking and as entertainment.

Prince_Vajda 15th March 2015 12:36 PM

It's moody and gory at the same time. Essential viewing for Horror film buffs.

Demdike@Cult Labs 15th March 2015 01:04 PM

It's just below Zombie Flesheaters for me.

Way better than Zombie Holocaust, Burial Ground etc.

I know some of it is quite silly, but it's also quite technically accomplished, far more than some other Italian horrors from the '80s.

Hawkmonger 15th March 2015 01:26 PM

To be fair Zombie Flesh Eaters set the bar really high. So much so it would be near impossible to produce a Zombie movie quite as good. But Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue has, as others have pointed out, production values and execution far surpassing that of Zombie Holocaust and Burial Grounds. Not that theirs anything wrong with those movies I might add, but their are two kinds of Italian zombie movie. Thise that set out to milk the budget as much as possible and produce something original, and then theirs the cheap-as-chips one's with shockingly poor effects.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 15th March 2015 04:26 PM

Taking into account the film as a whole, I much prefer Manchester Morgue to Zombie Flesh Eaters. The set-pieces are more effective in Fulci's film though, however that can be said about a great deal of his output to be honest.

Agreed. Take away the set pieces and more often than not there isn't an awful lot left of any worth.

Rik 15th March 2015 07:23 PM

I'd definitely put Manchester Morgue just behind ZFE in terms of favourite European Zombie film

And, yeah it's a hell of a lot better than Zombi Holocaust and Burial Ground!

Nordicdusk 15th March 2015 07:56 PM

Its better than Dawn Of The Dead

Ooomph! I wouldn't go THAT far. They both deliver equaly in different departments. Dawn is the more imaginative and original of the two, while ZFE has the better effects (IMHO) and surrealism. Though if I was to decide a favourite, Dawn would be it.

That being said, I tend to watch the two together. I was going to reqatch ZFE tonight actualy so I might double it up with Dawn...

Everyone else is discussing Living Dead / Manchester Morgue. You may have got the wrong end of the stick with your reply Hawk.

When i read both of your posts i heard Kyle's mum (South Park) saying What What What! in my head... Haha! both of you must have been at the crack pipe! Dawn of the dead is better than sex and zombie flesh eaters and pepporoni pizza and those cool japanese sweets with the strawberry shit in the middles! you get the picture.

HAHAHA! i literally laughed out loud! I had good sex once, I tripped on my jeans in a train toilet and blacked out from headbutting the wall, when i came too i had 'other' piss stains on my jeans and a red rash on my groin where i had rubbed on the wall as i fell to the floor... i fondly remember that! i still wonder if that's how i lost my virginity. Still i can;t help but smile when people ask me if i ever rode a train... ;) yes i have, i say with a smile. good times.

I came here to say i haven't seen the manchester morgue film, i'd like to but it seems to be expensive? My therapist tells me i share too much. he has no idea what he is talking about, nor does anyone else that thinks Dawn of the dead isn't the perfect zombie film.

Demdike@Cult Labs 15th March 2015 11:05 PM

I can see why you have a therapist Vipp. ;)

Hawkmonger 16th March 2015 06:54 AM

Night < Day < Dawn

Vampix 16th March 2015 07:35 AM

Day of the Dead is better than Dawn of the Dead, and Zombie Flesh-Eaters is better than Manchester Morgue IMO. I love the creepy atmosphere generated in Jorge Grau's film though, and think Fulci may have been influenced by it when he was making his classic zombie quartet. Manchester Morgue is a way better film than Zombie Holocaust and Burial Ground, but they're still two of my all time zombie faves.

Night is, for my money, the best of the three, with Dawn by the most entertaining and my personal favourite, but the increments between them are razor thin.

I'm not a fan of Night at all, in fact I can't remember the last time I sat down and watched it from beginning to end. I find it intensely boring. :behindsofa:

Very true there is not a massive gulf between them. For me it's
Day
Night
Dawn.
