As for The Keep, it had promise and some of the visual effects are quite interesting but aside from that it is a bit a snooze-fest. A little messy too. I haven't read the book so cannot comment on whether that is any better.
Personally I have to agree. i read the book and quite enjoyed it.

Saw the movie and was bitterly disappointed.

One of my personal favourite horror/fantasy films based on atmosphere alone, might even be my favourite Mann film. Sorry haters.

All entitled to our opinion.

It's certainly a cult film in every sense of the word, and everyone has their opinions of course, but I would very much like to see Mann's preferred or final cut of the film one day before making any final judgements. It's current form is severely edited by then Paramount studio execs. I've heard that it's original run time was over 3 hours, though that doesn't necassarily mean that was Mann's preferred version. Either way, we will get to see the intended version one day I hope!

I wanted to edit my original post to add my revised web link for my feature on The Keep, but it wouldn't let me, so here's a new post with a new link - enjoy!

I think Mann had done some sterling work over the years - MANHUNTER, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS and HEAT are all top drawer, IMO.

To this day I've never seen THE KEEP - I must check it out as it's the only one of his films I've not seen besides his most recent, BLACKHAT.

I didn't care for MIAMI VICE and PUBLIC ENEMIES at all really.
