Possession (1981) Getting the ball rolling... Banned alongside Cannibal Holocaust et al in the early 80s, Andrzej Zulawski's harrowing POSSESSION is a perfect example of Genre film tropes crashing headlong into the Arthouse. Here's a review I wrote a few years back... POSSESSION |

At that age you can take in the images and be wowed by the strangeness but any subtext is probably lost. Company of Wolves was like that for me. I watched it on video aged 13 or 14 then saw it as an adult and copped all the sexual undertones and folklore references.

yep exactly! i did it with quite a few films as we had a great video shop with a awesome world cinema section and loads of other obscure films too, i probs watch most too early to fully enjoy them but i remembered most for when i got older |

When you watch odd cinema at a young age I think it must rewire the brain.

Never seen this, but I've just ordered it from someone,so I'll read your review once I've watched it Sam. If done correctly, arthouse can blend with most genres to great effect.

If ever there was a cold, steely masterpiece that I would like to see released on Blu-Ray, then this is it.

This is one of my favourite films from the 1980s, which I still need to pick up on DVD. I, too first saw it at quite a young age and was impressed with many of the startling visuals. Essential viewing imo. |
