I haven't actually watched either of the discs yet, but I thought it would be useful to post some comparison screencaps.

Unfortunately it appears each print has a slightly different run time, so I just went with the first shot after the opening credits.

Looks like the 2011 print has the best picture quality, but the 4x3 isn't too bad looking and I think that might be the version to watch

I think it's reputation comes from the child- and female-related violence more than anything, attacks on "the family" rather than mindless teenage walking-genitalia.

I'll have to get round to picking this up at some point soon.

BTW - why is this in the Euro Horror section, as it's an American film..?

That's a good point, I'll stick up a screen shot from the Hardgore DVD and Dutch VHS later and see how they compare to the Code Red prints

Interesting comparison.

Remember that the scanning process used for vhs transfers shows more info at the top and bottom.

From Wiki:
"As a general rule (prior to the adoption of DVD), special effects would be done within the theatrical aspect ratio, but not the full-frame thereof; also the expanded image area can include extraneous objects—such as cables, microphone booms, jet vapor trails, or overhead telephone wires—not intended to be included in the frame."

[edit] well that's maybe a bit confusing, maybe an example to clarify...
Tartan's "open matte" Return of the Living Dead dvd didn't have the boom microphone popping up like it did in the vhs transfer.
