Your Favourite Horror Film from 1981

1981 was a year for some brilliant horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 1981 is...

The Evil Dead - Sam Raimi

Narrowly beating my favourite Fulci zombie flick, The Beyond to the top spot is Raimi's low budget in your face claymation shocker starring the one and only Bruce Campbell. Shot on a shoestring budget, this has become one of the most famous horror films of all time. The use of superb camera angles, coupled with the creative use of visual effects leaves a lasting impression on the viewer, and is why this is my favorite of '81.

Another brilliant year with two of the best werewolf films ever made (John Landis' is my favourite) and other great genre films but I'd have to go with The Evil Dead is my favourite of all movies that year. Sam Raimi's writing and direction was inspired and the unknown cast included an unlikely icon in Bruce Campbell. The mixture of serious horror and Three Stooges-type knockabout humour works extremely well so, although this is a horror rather than horror-comedy film, there are laughs to be had.

I'm going to be different and say, Evilspeak. :)

Evilspeak is a nice little film, and one I was very close to posting on my Runners Up list. However, it was looking over-saturated as it was, so I decided to leave it off. On retrospect, I do prefer it over a couple of films I did list, though.

Decisions,decisions...Let's make this short and sweet: ...E Tu Vivrai nel Terrore! L'AldilÃ* / The Beyond.Then there are the runner-ups The House by the Cemetery (hard-on for Fulci,it seems),Halloween II,The Funhouse,An American Werewolf in London,Evilspeak,Scanners and whatnot.

Another good year for Horror.

An American Werewolf In London is a classic,Wolfen is another fave of mine.

Galaxy of Terror is a gem of low budget genius,but my fave has to be THE EVIL DEAD.

One of the fondest memories I have of collecting DVD's is when Anchor Bay finally released it uncut in the UK.:cool:

Oh,and one of the most split decision questions ever-What's the best,THE HOWLING or AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON?

Others worth seeking out IMO would be ;

John Hough's THE INCUBUS with John Cassavettes on the hunt for a particularly nasty beast.....

Eric Weston's EVILSPEAK which has bullied Clint Howard turning to satanic powers to destroy those who persecute him......

and of course,1981 wouldn't be complete without some Eurocine class-trash in the guise of ZOMBIE LAKE and OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES!

I'll give special mentions to Dead & Buried and Nightmare,two films I truly love.
