I took a few stills from the AWE DVD so you can compare the 16:9 and 4:3 versions.

16:9 is cropped and definitely not the intended ratio and 4:3 seems kinda odd for a movie at that time. I would guess that 1:66:1 (14:9) is the correct ratio.

Yeah on the open matte you can see a little too much I think but the 16:9 is too close, I think I prefer the 4:3 though.

Here are some grabs from the old Redemption version which is 1.66:1:
