Stagefright

Maybe some people who have got the discs can let me know which of the discs are better?

The EC version or the AB/BU versions - not even counting the 'Beyond Terror' version since the cover is nasty!

:D

Pete 9th August 2012 02:21 PM

There is a lot of discussion over what is the correct ratio for this film. The Anchor Bay/BU edition is 1.85:1 and crops the final shot of the film, while the EC and Vipco editions are completely open matte and look good but it still doesn't look right. The EC includes the option of including a fake 1.66:1 matte over the film.

The more recent AWE edition has both the Widescreen transfer from the R1 editions and the full frame transfer from the EC & Vipco dvds and, until a BD eventually comes along, I'd say get that.

This is the version Pete is talking about, I've used this seller loads of times and found them very reliable

Thanks guys, I actually haven't seen it since the Redemption VHS and I honestly can't remember whether that was full frame or not!

Yeah, I've used them loads of times myself and they are excellent.

It was letterboxed. I had Redemption's VCD of it and it looked alright but was way to dark.

Justin101 9th August 2012 02:41 PM

I'll have it in 4-6 days :D

 I can't think of a single thing that's right with it! The axe is out of proportion and looks weird floating in front with that naff lens flare on it. The background looks like they just picked a photo at random and stuck it in there. The title font sucks. etc....

Justin101 9th August 2012 03:07 PM

It might be shit but it's the best cover for it I've seen lol.

compared to the Anchor Bay its much better
and besides there other covers around from different countries

Slippery Jack 9th August 2012 03:11 PM

To be honest I prefer the Anchor Bay cover with the baffling Aquarius artwork. At least it's a painted image executed with a degree of skill . . .

That's beacuse they are heads in a fishtank! I guess it has something to do with the alternate title Aquarius ? Maybe the artist was told the title first and the plot much later? I find that confusion quite endearing  . . .

I took a few stills from the AWE DVD so you can compare the 16:9 and 4:3 versions.

16:9 is cropped and definitely not the intended ratio and 4:3 seems kinda odd for a movie at that time. I would guess that 1:66:1 (14:9) is the correct ratio.

I might redo this at some point, as there's a few things I'd like to change.
But this was my humble attempt at a Japanese style poster.

Not only all posters, but all DVD / video covers should be like this!

Yeah on the open matte you can see a little too much I think but the 16:9 is too close, I think I prefer the 4:3 though.

Thanks for the screenies

ReturnToZero 9th August 2012 09:44 PM

The 4:3 version has better picture quality too :)

Pete 9th August 2012 09:49 PM

Same 4:3 version as the EC and Vipco editions. :)

Probably thought the film was called Aquarium. It's amazing the damage that can be wrought with a simple typo.

You can see that they have cropped the fullscreen version so it will fit to 1:66:1 :)

I wonder if he was given a limited number of stills to work with, and one was of the Nurse and the fishtank and so he thought it must be an important scene?

And I bet he got the gig late and had to pull an all-nighter to finish it!
