I've never seen Audition.

Quick question.

Which is that Asian film (Korean i think) set at a lakeside cabin?

It's pretty famous.

Edit - I've remembered - The Isle.

I'd recommend it, I'm not a huge fan of Asian cinema, but of the few I own, Audition and Ichi the Killer are my favourites.
Like Nordic says, try to go in without thinking too much about what you've read/heard about it and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
It's certainly better than the hugely overrated Oldboy, a film I've owned since it was released and only watched once (which compared to the amount of low budget shite I own that get many rewatches says a lot about the film!)

Audition is a funny one as it was marketed as a romantic drama on release - which it kind of is up until the final act. The shocking change of pace towards the end horrified a lot of native audiences at the time and its notoriety filtered overseas. However, many who've gone in expecting a twisted gore fest have been left disappointed.

Audition is certainly a powerful, cleverly made film but you're better off going in without the hype and as others have said without thinking too much about what you've heard about it (if you can). It's a film I really like a lot and it graces my collection.

I loaned it to a friend (I only gave him the disc). He had no idea what it was about and watched the first half one night. He thought it was a nice, slow romantic drama and decided to stop the film and watch it with his girlfriend the next night.

Oh, if I could have been a fly on the wall.

But, yeah, Audition is extraordinary. It's amazing how the first half is shot like an Ozu film (balanced compositions, natural photography, long takes) and as the the second half progresses the camera is off-kilter, heavy filters are employed and the pace is erratic. Glorious.

I've heard that the Blu is far from great.

I've stuck with my Tartan DVD for now.
