Its a bit odd that no one appears to be trying to put it out surely it would sell well for someone. Could it be rights issues ?

As it would be a massive seller, I've no idea why no one has released the international cut on Blu-ray, just the American unrated theatrical cut with the title Dead Alive and fairly paltry extra features.

That said, the unrated theatrical cut is supposed to be Peter Jackson's preferred version, though I imagine he also prefers the title Braindead, as that was the one used in New Zealand.

I have heard that the rights of the 'international version' of Braindead (as well as the rights for Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles) had reverted back to Wingnut Films (Jackson's own company). There was talk of him releasing all three on Blu once he'd finished all his Middle Earth films. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long now.

Fingers crossed! I only have the Australian DVD of Meet the Feebles because it wasn't available in the UK at the time (I'm not sure if it is now).

Jackson guest edited a recent issue of Empire and there was a large multi page feature on Braindead and Bad Taste. He said his next project was sorting out new blu and dvd releases for them in very special editions.
Demoncrat and Nordicdusk like this.

They are near the top of my most wanted Blu-ray releases list, where the film is available and doesn't need completely reconstructing, so not including The Exorcist III.

If the releases are anywhere near as good as The Frighteners – as they should be – I'll be happy.

He's probably getting Andy Serkis to do a motion-capture for Baby Selwyn!

Peter Jackson Says 4K Restorations of Dead Alive, Bad Taste Are Still Coming / Paste Magazine

"It’s been a few years since director Peter Jackson has really revisited the long-promised remasters and Blu-ray releases of his earliest New Zealand-based films, which include the likes of Dead Alive, Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles. In a recent interview ... the Get Back helmer confirmed that he is increasingly turning his attention in that direction, and that we could see 4K remastered versions of his profane early works — which hail from what he dubs his 'naughty years' — within the next year."
