The Lost (2006)

Has anyone here seen the lost? Based on the Jack Ketchum novel.
I thought it was quite thought provoking as its based on a true story. I think Ketchum makes excellent books although only have read Girl Next Door and Off Season. I seen all the other movies based on his books, GND, Red and Offspring. I loved all of them apart from Offspring, I thought it was a bit weak overall so am surprised to see Ti West is going to direct a sequel. Might need a 2nd viewing to make me like it

Anyway back to The Lost..so whos seen it?

Not me. But I've red the novel and like all the Ketchum novels I've read so far
(The Lost, Off Season, Girls Night Out, Offspring, Girl Next Door) but I've never seen any of the movie adaptations.

So I'm interested in what people say too...esp those who have read the novels.

I have seen GND and have read the book and thought the book was amazing and very disturbing and knew that they cant do everythin from the book on screen so wont be as shockin but after seeing the movie you cant help but feel dirty. It is griping and raw and has its disturbing moments. For a low budget indie flick its amazing at what they done and the atmosphere they created. You still care for the two sisters like you did in the book. I highly recommend the movie.

My thing against the movie was that they supposedly watered down how complicit in his inaction the boy was...and that they lost his 'narration' that was essential i knowing what he was feeling at the time.

They do minimise the boy's complicity for the film, but nonetheless it is a fine, fine adaptation of the book and a superb film well worth seeing.

Maybe.

The book was perhaps the most heartbreaking, hard to finish, novel I have ever read. Made worse when you are a father to a young Daughter.

I thought 'The Lost' was a bit of a cracker Nekro. Having got GND a while back from the states I thought I would give it a look and was quite impressed.

Sadly under-rated as not many appear to have seen it.

Yeah Lost and GND are two very good american indie flicks.
Ketchum's story can grow into good movies if made by the right people.

I do agree that they waterd down the boys interaction, not sure why as they could have showed a bit of it but maybe they wanted to change it slightly so you feel sorry for the kid too as well as Sylvia.

Which is my problem.
While reading the book you screamed and ranted inside you head and cried in vain for him to grow some and do something.
To me the whole point of the novel was that it was a man's memories of the horrific things he did and worse...never did....as a child.
Things that have scarred his entire life forever. NOT because of what happened to the girl as such, but that he allowed it to happen.
That he was as bad as any inbred raping lowlife that abused her. Just as much to blame.
And worse than even that...the man knew the girl knew that he did nothing right up until the end.

That part of the story is the heaping great pile of excrement dumped on the rotting corpse of that girl's grotesque fate. And as such that is what the book is.

Remove all that and you simply have a torture flick that may be strong stuff and upsetting, but isn't the head shoved down the crap covered toilet bowl ,while a bloated crack whore pisses on your head and a rabid dog bites holes in your bollocks, as your loved ones look on and laugh, that the novel is.

But saying that...why would I want that?
Don't ask me...I give up even as a write this.
Life's a funny old bit of genocide when you think about it.
Best not to then.

Well its not really a torture porn type flick at all. For me it was all about Sylvia as the true story was based on that. I think I heard Jack Ketchum did say that he wanted to tell the story through the eyes of a young boy who witnessed the crime. I dont think its about the boy that much, yes thats in the back of your mind but while I was reading it, all I could think about is Sylvia. In the movie you do see him thinking about going to the police so you do get a sense that he is conflicting inside. So there is something there.
