2000-2010: A Good Decade for Horror?

What a question!

It's very nearly the end of 2010, and as such it's nearing the end of a decade. How fast time flies! :faint: But what do you think of the horror output over the past 10 years? From the torture porn films to the zombie boom to remakes galore.

Was this decade a good decade for horror?

BioZombie 28th December 2010 06:27 PM

I think the naughties were pretty good for horror, with fantastic films including.

Battle Royale
Versus
Haute Tension
Martyrs
Trick or Treat
Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Toykyo Gore Police
Meatball Machines
House of 1000 Corpses
The Devils Rejects
Let The Right One In
Eden Lake
Drag Me To Hell
The Decent
Ginger Snaps
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland
Bubba Ho-tep

There's probably loads more great stuff, but I cant think atm.

Jonny114 30th December 2010 09:33 AM

No it wasn't a good decade for horror films. This is because there were so meny remakes being made.

it'smebilly 1st January 2011 07:58 PM

I think overall, pretty good, when compared to the horror(less) 90's. I have enjoyed some of the remakes too. The hills have eyes, my bloody valentine being two examples, though there has obviously been some atrocious remakes.

I liked a lot of the so called torture porn output as well. Since the 90's was the decade that horror lost it's balls it was good to see that in the noughties, it grew a pair. The latter part as seen some fun horror films.

There were a lot more shite then good in the 00s
there has been some really awesome movies released like Pans Labyrinth and Let The Right One In.

But remakes have come and gone and lots of generic horror movies.

the blob 1st January 2011 11:51 PM

I think it's been pretty average. Some decent films and a handful of classics but not much I'd be over-excited to revisit ten years from now probably. My favourite from the decade is A Tale Of Two Sisters but others I really liked were Battle Royale, Let The Right One In, 28 Days Later, The Descent, House Of 1000 Corpses, Haute Tension and Wolf Creek. Need to see more of the French stuff to properly pass judgement though...

Actually, an honorary mention to Vacancy which I thought was going to be crap and turned out pretty good for me. :)

There were so many awesome movies already listed...I'm glad to see some Ginger Snaps love. They were always a guilt pleasure of mine.

As far as the remakes that abounded...there were a few I really liked. Dawn ofthe Dead was great...though I've yet to see any of the other Romero remakes...I heard they were awful. Some were surprising...I really liked The Crazies...even though I pushed play with a sour face thoroughly intending on hating it...

The Ginger Snaps series was great (imo).
Now how could I forget about Sleepless (2001)...

nekromantik 2nd January 2011 08:08 PM

i enjoyed first GS but not seen the others.

Peter Neal 2nd January 2011 08:18 PM

For somebody who had the misfortune to come to the genre at the very start of what's now widely referred to as "the dire years in horror" (the late 80's-mid 90's), the nougthies were a great time to finally catch some hard hitting horror regularly on the big theater screen.
I didn't bother much with the hatred for "modern horror" which spilled into many www discussions in the course of the last 10 years, as for every uninspired Hollywood rehash there were a dozen of foreign genre flicks to discover, coming straight out of corners I wouldn't have ever suspected of producing notable horror in the first place, with the Norwegians and, particularly, the French (among many others) churming out their fair share of genre pictures during the 00s- also thanks to the mainstream embracing "strong horror", thus making it bankable also for smaller countires and indie filmmakers to give their scare-tactics a try.
A healthy decade indeed!

My faves from the last 10 years in no particular order:

1) Martyrs
2) Haute Tension
3) Inside
4) Wolf Creek
5) Eden Lake
6) 28 Days Later
7) Cold Prey 2
8) Let the Right One In
9) Saw
10) "The Last House on the Left" (2009)

Argentofan 2nd January 2011 08:40 PM

I think House Of The Devil should be mentioned too ;) That was brilliant.

Gojirosan 2nd January 2011 08:47 PM

Well, sure the remake and sequel thing was depressing and the worst horror films that come to mind from the decade were remakes, sequels and franchises from Hollywood for the most part (the insultingly dreadful Dawn Of The Dead remake, the embarrassing Final Destination yawnfests, the appalling Saw sequels and so on).

But on the other hand there were far more fine films. The return of creature features (so many wonderful crocodile films!!! Just a pity Cloverfield was so bloody awful), the emergence of the new Scandanavian, French and Spanish waves which has brought us some of the best horror in many years, the continued quality of Oriental horror films - especially Korea, a revival of 70s style hard human horror with the likes of Wolf Creek and Eden Lake, even some decent Hollywood stuff!!! And Alexandre Aja achieved that rarest of things - not once but twice - the good remake!

Overall, I think it has been a fine, fine decade for horror.

The second one was ok...but the first and third are some of my favorites.

I also am glad to see everyone loved Let the Right One In. I thought it was great! I hadn't gotten around to buying it (I saw it on Netflix first) and one of my customers had a copy of the Blu-Ray he was going to toss out! So I scored it for free. =)

Totally forgot about those two. Both brilliant films and Dog Soldiers probably the best of the British ones I've seen.

Another one I forgot about is [B]Shutter[B]. Definitely one of the best of the Asian horrors from the decade.

Concertina 3rd January 2011 03:55 AM

I third Dog Soldiers. Love that movie. Also...someone mentioned Dagon...which of course I love.

Some others:
Ravenous
Dead and Breakfast
Anything by Guillermo del Toro; Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage, Blade 2.
The Grindhouse movies, most notably Death Proof...but I'm a sucker for Kurt Russell.
Slither
The Underworld movies.
Undead...if only for the scene where the little girl ripped out the dude's heart.
The Signal

I know I have so many more I loved...but that's just a bit from off my shelf.

This will rapidly turn into the 'films I forgot about' thread for me.

Three and Three Extremes, in particular Dumplings, which has forever put me off steamed Dumplings now... two great antologies!

Forgot about Three Extremes too...

Have you seen the feature length Dumplings, blob? Very good, imo.

Yeah, I actually bought that before I bought the whole of Three Extremes. That and Going Nowhere on Three are my two faves I think.

Gothmogxx 28th March 2014 05:45 PM

I really liked this decade. Some of my favourite horror films were released at that time in the form of Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Hatchet, Saw (all of them pretty much), Land of the Dead, Cabin Fever, Hostel I and II... Probably forgeting a few but thats from the top of my head.

oaxaca 29th March 2014 09:42 PM

I think the best of the decade definitely came from Korea. I don't rate much of the Western stuff I've seen from the noughties; the remakes that I bothered to watch (not many :p) were dire, wasn't much of a fan of Saw and its million sequels, not much of a fan of Guillermo del Toro's stuff, 28 days later... Ugh! THE DESCENT didn't do anything for me, nor did TRICK R TREAT. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN was ok, I appreciated the atmosphere. One film I liked was HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, but the 80s setting helped that one, hehe. DAGON, DRAG ME TO HELL, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE were others I enjoyed but I'm really struggling to think of many more and none really wowed me.

In all honesty I think I've seen and liked more US & Brit horror movies made between 2010-2014 than the entire '00 decade :o But if you ask me, bring back the 80s and 90s :p
