Starship Troopers? Why? That film has in no way dated, and isn't even that old, relatively speaking. There's absolutely nothing anyone can add to that film, and if they're thinking of a new franchise, the original sequels as I remember weren't good. On the upside, the new version of Robocop looks as if it might be pretty decent, though still pointless, naturally, as was Total Recall, which was notable mainly for the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale, who shall someday be my wife.

About the only remake I've seen in the last five years that's been totally justified was Maniac, which is actually far superior and bloodier than something which was originally not that good a film.

That quote from the man himself in the linked article nails it:

“Yes, they bought the rights, we know that, but I really thought they made a mistake when they did the remake by making it so serious. I’m not so sure [that approach] will work for ['Starship Troopers’] either. I think all of these films are accepted because they don’t take themselves so seriously. There’s a lightness, you believe it, but we also know it’s not true.”

The other extreme they could go to, of course, is to make the films satirical and ironic, which they happened to be in the first place, if they didn't want to alienate their original fans by solemnifying the tone. One approach is bad, and the other redundant, so it's hard to see the point.

Verhoeven's spot on. They hit the action beats but miss the humour and the lightness. Not everything has to work in a type of post-Nolan-Batman super seriousness.

Generally you can't, but that doesn't stop certain people from trying.

However, with serials such as Hannibal and Bates' Motel gaining popularity it's inevitable that we will see a lot more of these classic films transformed into TV shows (whether they actually encapsulate the essence of the original films or just borrow on the name and a few key themes is a different matter entirely though ;))

I'm patiently waiting for a TV adaptation of The Wicker Man to surface. Odds are I'll be waiting a while... :p ;)

There was a couple films on radio that are remakes but only onei remember was point break.

I Saw The Devil is also considered to be remade... guess they were happy with the result of the Old Boy remake...
