On the bright side, this might bring about a decent HD release of the original film. Fingers crossed.

REMAKES AND SEQUELS in the pipeline

Some you'll know others you might not, one or two will have already been released

Remakes

Annie

A Prophet
The acclaimed Jacques Audiard movie A Prophet is one of the best crime sagas to hit the big screen in the past five years. If you've not seen it yet, then it's a hugely rewarding, if difficult to watch at times, piece of cinema.
Sony has now taken out an option for an English language remake, which Neal H Moritz and Toby Jaffe will be producing under the Original Film banner. They've got to get the screenplay right first, before pushing too far forward, so treat this one as in its infancy.

Batman

UPDATE: The Batman reboot is now officially tied to the Man Of Steel sequel, it's been confirmed. Due in 2015, with a new actor taking the role of Batman, it's looking like a Batman Vs Superman movie, with Zack Snyder directing, and David S Goyer penning the screenplay...

Big Man Japan

The Black Hole
Oblivion and TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski continues to develop a remake of The Black Hole. Prometheus' Jon Spaihts continues to work on a screenplay for the film, and Kosinski has revealed that he sees the film more as a reboot than a remake. It's touch and go whether he makes that before TRON 3, though. Either way, it's clearly prominent on his current slate of projects.

Bloodsport
There's going to be no Jean-Claude Van Damme in the announced remake of Bloodsport that's currently in the works. Robert Mark Kamen, the co-writer of Taken 2, has been working on the script, and Phillip Noyce (Clear And Present Danger, Rabbit Proof Fence) had, at one stage, signed on to direct the movie. It's still in the works as we understand it, and the plan is, apparently, for a film that's more character driven than the original...

The Crow
At long last, it looks like the planned remake/reboot of The Crow is finally happening. The title role had been linked to Bradley Cooper and Tom Hiddleston, but in the end, it's Luke Evans who has signed up for the film. F Javier Gutierrez is directing the new film, and original Crow creator James O'Barr has now boarded the project on a consultancy basis. The Crow is now expected to shoot next year.

Daredevil
It seems like it's a question of 'when' we get a Daredevil reboot rather than 'if'. Sadly, that's a question with a very clear answer of 'not soon'. Joe Carnahan had been the latest to develop a new take on Daredevil back when 20th Century Fox had the rights. However, when Fox ran out of time, the rights went back to Marvel, and Carnahan's take on the material was dead.
Marvel doesn't have a plan, that we know of, to include a new Daredevil in its phase three of films, building up to The Avengers 3. But it does now seem a decent bet for phase four. It refused to extend the rights to Fox, and while it may just have got the character rights back because it wanted them in house, there's a decent chance that a movie may finally come out at the end of it all. 2018 would be optimistic, though.

Escape From New York
One of the best remakes of recent times was Breck Eisner's new take on The Crazies. So, even though it was hard to get enthusiastic about a remake of John Carpenter's wonderful Escape From New York, Eisner's involvement was at least some kind of olive branch.
We're unsure if he's still involved, but producer Joel Silver has confirmed this year that this remains an active project, so much so that he's toying with the idea of a trilogy of films. Tom Hardy and Jason Statham have been mentioned, but that mainly sounds like internet tittle tattle in truth. Still, expect developments...

Fantastic Four
Fox has set a March 2015 release date for its full-on reboot of the Fantastic Four series of films. Chronicle director Josh Trank has signed up to helm this one, which will take Marvel's First Family pretty much back to square one from what we can make out. Casting has yet to be announced.

Flatliners
This one's been rumoured for some time, but things took a substantive step forward earlier in the year when Niels Arden Oplev - the director of the original movie version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - was hired to helm a new take on Flatliners. Ben Ripley, who wrote Source Code, is working on the script for the film, although that's as much as we know about the project's current state right now...

Flight Of The Navigator

Godzilla
Here's a reboot that's in very good hands. Director Gareth Edwards gave the world the film Monsters, and he's a strong choice to bring Godzilla back to the big screen. Amongst the writers who have worked on this one are Frank Darabont, David S Goyer and Max Borenstein, and production is ongoing on the movie. The cast includes the likes of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, David Strathairn and Elizabeth Olsen. And Godzilla is set for release in May 2014.

Gremlins
A Gremlins reboot remains on the agenda at Warner Bros it seems, with the studio reported at the start of the year to be negotiating with Amblin Entertainment for the rights to reboot the franchise. Amblin, as it was said back in January, was warming to the idea. It's moving slowly this one, but it does now appear to be moving...

Headhunters
Based on the book by Jo Nesbo, the 2011 Norwegian thriller Headhunters is an excellent piece of work, one that was quickly snapped up for the remake treatment. Whilst there's not been much noise about it since, we know that Sacha Gervasi (who directed Anvil) had been hired to write the script. Mark Wahlberg had expressed interest in the project too.

Heat
No, not that one. The Heat remake we're talking about here is a new take on the Burt Reynolds movie of the same name. Originally released in 1986, the new Heat is going to feature Jason Statham, who takes on the role of a recovering gambling addict who provides protection to his friends.
William Goldman wrote the novel the film is based on, and has penned the script. Heat reunites The Statham with director Simon West, who previously helmed The Expendables 2 and The Mechanic with the great man.

Highlander
Rebooting a film with a tagline 'there can be only one' positively invites the world to chortle when a fresh take on the material is announced. That's been one of the fewer problems associated with the plan to reboot Highlander, though. Ryan Reynolds had been linked with the project for some time, before walking away in June of this year. Directors such as Justin Lin and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo have also quit the project, which currently finds itself with neither a leading man or a director. That said, Summit Entertainment is still very much pressing ahead with the film, and a new director will now be able to choose their lead actor.

It
Stephen King's It was adapted technically for television, with Tim Curry putting in a memorable performance as Pennywise the Clown. In the UK, it was mashed together into one near three hour cut, and plans are now afoot for a new take on the material.
Cary Fukunaga, best known for directing Jane Eyre and Sin Nombre, has plans to write and direct a new adaptation of It, and the idea is for it to be two films. Things have been quiet on the project for the last year however, as the new It remains stuck in development for the time being.

Jacob's Ladder
One of the more bizarre choices for a remake is the planned fresh take on Adrian Lyne's 1990 psychological horror, Jacob's Ladder. Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) is working on the latest draft of the script, and the idea is for the film to be a homage to the original, rather than a straight remake. Sounds a bit pointless either way, really.

Jack Ryan
In effect, this December's Jack Ryan will be the third time the character has been rebooted for the big screen since he first appeared in the guise of Alec Baldwin in The Hunt For Red October. There's never been a bad Jack Ryan film to date, and the new one sees Chris Pine treading where Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have trodden before. Kenneth Branagh is directing, and the cast is rounded out with the likes of Branagh himself, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and David Paymer. It's due out at Christmas, and it's called, simply, Jack Ryan.

Jumanji
We've said it before and we'll say it again: Zathura is a much better film than Jumanji, based around the same central concept. Nonetheless, Columbia Pictures have hired Zach Helm to pen a new take on Jumanji for the big screen. Don't expect Robin Williams should it finally get the green light...

The Killer
The majestic John Woo movie The Killer is an action movie with genuine heart to it, alongside some spectacular set piece sequences. And there's an English language version still in the cooker. It had been announced that financing was in place, and that John H Lee was set to direct. The location of the story is set to movie to present day Los Angeles, but the guts of the narrative sound like they're in tact.
In the middle of last year, John Woo said he had "supreme confidence" in the new movie, although we've not heard much about it since then.

The Legend Of Conan
An odd one this, as it's effectively going to reboot the reboot, to get things back to how the original strand of Conan movies were. Chris Morgan has penned a script that will see Arnold Schwarzenegger pick up the role of Conan as a much older man. There's going to be no mention whatsoever of the Jason Momoa-headlined reboot that came and went a year or two back.

Schwarzenegger is likely to slot The Legend Of Conan in later this year, although he may have to juggle his schedule with his commitments to a new Terminator film to consider. Expect the movie in 2014 or 2015, though.

Leprechaun
WWE Studios has added to its production slate a remake of the film Leprechaun, which is going to see WWE star Hornswoggle (aka Dylan Postl) take on the role first realised by Warwick Davis. Zach Lipvosky is going to direct this one, having one the Steven Spielberg-backed reality TV series, On The Lot.

Logan's Run
For a while, Ryan Gosling was linked with the long-in-gestation remake of Logan's Run, which Warner Bros is trying to get going. But with Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn off the project, the mantle has now passed to the creator of the Bioshock videogame series. Ken Levine has been hired, very recently, to pen the latest draft of the Logan's Run screenplay, which suggests that this is a project very much still active. It just needs a star and a director to get it firmly onto the proverbial grid...

Mortal Kombat
After Mortal Kombat: Annihilation disappointed at the box office back in 1997, it looked like the big screen adventures of the ultra-violent videogame were at an end. However, there's a reboot on the way. The new Mortal Kombat film is in the hands of director Kevin Tancharoen. He directed Glee 3D, but it's more the fact that he also made the popular Internet short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth that's landed him the job. Oren Uziel was hired to write the script. Now we just wait for New Line and Warner Bros to officially fire the starting gun.

The Mummy
Off the back of remaking Total Recall, Len Wiseman is set to embark on another franchise reboot of sorts, with The Mummy. The idea this time is that the film will be set in the modern day, and the script has come from Jon Spaights (Prometheus), with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci amongst the producers. Universal will look to get this one moving sooner rather than later, we suspect.

National Lampoon's Vacation
The reboot of the Vacation movies was all set to go ahead earlier this year, with Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M Goldstein having penned a script, and were preparing to direct too. Ed Helms remains attached to the project, which is expected to also feature Chevy Chase. But the film has apparently gone back into development, over an argument about the target rating the end cut should aim at. Expect movement on it soon though.

Point Break

Whenever we mention the proposed remake of Point Break on the site, it's fair to say that it does not seem to go down well. And yet the new version presses ahead. Ericson Core is going to direct this time. He previously helmed the Mark Wahlberg-headlined Invincible, but he's also earned his stripes for his cinematography, across features such as Daredevil and The Fast And The Furious. The plan remains to star

Poltergeist
Few people we've ever met on the planet Earth have ever expressed any kind of joy at the quite wonderfully chilling Poltergeist being remade. But there are one or two reasons for cautious optimisim here. Firstly, Sam Raimi is serving as one of the producers on the new project. Secondly though, the new Poltergeist is set to be directed by Gil Kenan. Get yourself a copy of his animated movie Monster House, and you'll see why there may yet be some promise here.

Police Academy
Progress has been slow on the almost-inevitable rebooting of the Police Academy movie franchise. Last year, it was confirmed that Scott Zabielski had been appointed to direct the new movie. However, little has been heard since (save for Jeremy Garelick being hired to do some rewrites last summer). This is a project that will happen at some point, and we'd assume that they'd want cameos from one or two of the more familiar recruits of old. It may be that New Line want to get the National Lampoon's Vacation reboot sorted first, though.

Rebecca

DreamWorks has all but greenlit a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca, which in turn was based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier. Steven Knight (Hummingbird) has worked on the script for this one, and Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) has been recruited to direct.

Short Circuit

Starship Troopers

If you were one of those who didn't care at all for last year's new take on Total Recall (which, to be fair, we thought had its moments), then you might want to take solace in the fact that it may have had an unexpected side effect. Because up until that point, plans were afoot for a new take on Starship Troopers, with less violence to it. At the end of last year, original director Paul Verhoeven told The Playlist that he didn't know if "they're going to do Starship Troopers after the failure of Total Recall". It remains somewhere in development, but things have certainly gone quiet...

Suspiria
David Gordon Green, off the back of films such as The Sitter, Your Highness and George Washington, had planned to be moving ahead with a remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria by now. However, the project has hit a problem, which continues to hold it up. In the words of the writer/director to Indiewire, it's "caught up in legal crap, so who knows what will ever happen to that". As far as we know, the project isn't technically dead, but it certainly sounds as though it's on life support.

Sympathy For Mr Vengeance
It may be that all concerned wait to see just how well the remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy goes down before formally pressing ahead with this one, but Brian Tucker (Broken City) has been hired to pen a script for an English language take on Sympathy For Mr Vengeance. He's got, might we suggest, quite a job on his hands.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Under the stewardship of Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes banner, director Jonathan Liebseman is currently shooting Paramount's big screen reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The film is locked in for a summer 2014 release, and the cast includes the likes of William Fichtner and Megan Fox. If it works, expect sequels...

Terminator
a brand new trilogy of Terminator films heads to the big screen starting in June 2015. Paramount Pictures has come in to distribute the fifth Terminator movie, which is set to bring Arnold Schwarzenegger back to the franchise. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has also been linked with the film. This will be the first, if all goes to plan, of a new trilogy of films. Currently working on the script for the first of them are Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier.

Timecop
Based on the original tale from Dark Horse Comics, Timecop gave Jean-Claude Van Damme one of his biggest ever box office hits. Earlier this year, it was revealed that a new version of Timecop was in development though, and this will go back to the source material. As such, no Van Damme. It's being produced by Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty, and remains in its early stages.

Tomb Raider
GK Films now has the rights for the big screen adventures of Lara Croft, and thus a reboot of the Tomb Raider film series is coming. It arrives off the back of a very, very successful videogame reboot, and the last we heard on the new Tomb Raider was that Buffy The Vampire Slayer alumnus Marti Noxon had been brought on board to help put together a final screenplay.

Toxic Avenger
For some time, there's been talk of a remake of Troma's The Toxic Avenger. And in the past few months, things look like they've fallen into place. In fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to take on a small role in the movie, as The Exterminator. Steve Pink remains attached to direct this one, with production due to start before the year is out. That makes a 2014 release really rather possible.

Van Helsing
It's probably best to concede from the off that the 2004 movie of Van Helsing, from The Mummy director Stephen Sommers, was not a great film. It had Hugh Jackman in it, which was useful, but the end movie felt like a videogame you weren't invited to play.

Star Trek and Fringe scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are thus going back to the characters of Bram Stoker for a new big screen stab at the film, which has thus far got Tom Cruise circling the project, potentially to star. It's still a project bubbling along, rather than one close to getting made, yet it remains active.

Videodrome

Waterworld
At the end of 2012, it was revealed that Syfy was toying with the idea of a remake of sorts of Waterworld. It was undecided whether to make it into a television series or a standalone movie,

Weird Science

The Wild Bunch
A contemporary remake of The Wild Bunch is one of the projects that Will Smith is contemplating. This time around, the focus would be on a bunch of DEA agents hunting down a Mexican drug cartel.

xXx
It's hard to tell at the moment whether the planned xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage will be a reboot or sequel. Given the performance its predecessor however, we suspect a reboot of sorts is likely to be in order. The film seems a little in limbo at the moment, unsurprising given Diesel's commitments to the Fast & Furious films, and also to rebooting Riddick (due in cinemas shortly). With xXx, the last we heard was that director Rob Cohen was likely to return alongside Diesel, but it's a project that's been quiet for a couple of years now. When Diesel's schedule frees up, it may just finally press ahead.

Young Sherlock Holmes
Another 80s favourite, the plan to reboot Young Sherlock Holmes is a by-product, presumably, of the success of TV shows Sherlock and Elementary (as well as the Robert Downey Jr-headlined Sherlock Holmes movies). The last we heard of this one, Evan Spiliotopoulos has been hired to write the new screenplay (he previously worked on The Lion King 1 1/2). Original writer Chris Columbus is set to serve as a producer.

Sequels

10 Things I Hate About You remains a strong film, bolstered by the lead performances from Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. It's not the most obvious choice for a sequel though. However, it's getting one, by the name of 10 Things I Hate About Life, and Evan Rachel Wood has signed up to take the lead role. Gil Junger, director of the first film, is back for this one, which is scheduled for release in the UK in October.

21 Jump Street 2

Deals are in place for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to reprise their roles for a sequel to the terrific comedy 21 Jump Street. The first film set things up perfectly for a follow-up, and we'd hope that Chris Miller and Phil Lord will direct again. They need to finish off their Lego movie first, though.

Alice In Wonderland 2

We've yet to meet someone who genuinely really liked Tim Burton's live action take on Alice In Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp, but it certainly made a heavy impact at the box office. So much so that work is afoot on Alice In Wonderland 2, which presumably will dig back into the Lewis Carroll books for its story. Disney has ordered a screenplay from Linda Woolverton, and then it has the job of trying to lure Burton and Depp back. Don't expect this one too soon...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Marc Webb is back behind the camera for Andrew Garfield's second adventure as the webslinger, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shooting in 2013, ahead of its release in 2014. This time around, newcomers to the cast include Jamie Foxx as Electro, Shailene Woodley as MJ and Chronicle's Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn. Once this one is done, don't expect The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to be too far behind...

American Pie 5

Whilst the fourth cinematically-released American Pie movie may have struggled in the US, it cleaned up around the world, and as such, there's talk that the Reunion won't have been the last outing for Jim, Stifler and the rest of the gang. Universal has hired Reunion writer-directors Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz to put together the new film, although what direction they're looking to go remains to be seen. Expect Universal to try and get this moving while the proverbial iron is quite hot though.

Anchorman 2

It's finally happening, as the above trailer demonstrates. Adam McKay is directing again, while Will Ferrell will be reprising the role of Ron Burgundy. Also returning are Steve Carell and Christina Applegate, with Kristen Wiig likely to join the cast. The film is set for release in December, although just a few days ago, it was reported that Steve Carell hadn't yet seen the screenplay. Best get cracking, then...

Austin Powers 4

News is thin on the ground, but Mike Myers is believed to be keen to revive the character of Austin Powers for a new movie. The deal was reportedly done early last year, but nothing's been heard since. Myers may well be working on the screenplay, and it's unclear as of yet if Jay Roach is going to return to direct.

Avatar 2, 3 and 4

As he polishes off the screenplays to at least two Avatar sequels (with the possibility of a third), James Cameron is finally set to start production soon on the biggest film of all time at the box office. The current plan is to have Avatar 2 in cinemas in 2015, with Avatar 3 likely to follow the year after. Cameron will be shooting them both at the same time, with cameras set to roll before 2013 is out.

The Avengers 2

Joss Whedon has already started to put together elements of his already eagerly-awaited follow up to The Avengers. There's the small matter of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man sequels for Marvel to get through first, as well as Guardians Of The Galaxy and Ant-Man, and you can expect developments in at least four of those to make it into the new Avengers movie. Inevitably, details are light at the moment, short of the fact that the movie is definitely arriving in the summer of 2015.

Bad Santa 2

There's been slow progress on the Bad Santa sequel, but there does still seem to be interest in making it. It's apparently in the script rewriting stage, with Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) taking over the directorial reigns. Billy Bob Thornton will reprise the lead role, but there's still no confirmed start date in place.

Beetlejuice 2

Things have been quiet on the Beetlejuice 2 front of late, with the last we heard being that David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith were involved in developing a sequel to one of Tim Burton's finest movies. The plan would be for Michael Keaton to return to the lead role, and not in a cameo, or anything throwaway. That said, we suspect the chances of Beetlejuice 2 happening aren't that high...

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2

Presumably set to be called The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a follow-up is in the works to the surprise smash hit of 2012. Helen Mirren and Colin Firth are set to join the cast for the sequel, although further details on it aren't known at the moment. It's the kind of project that could come together really rather quickly though...

Bill & Ted 3

A script now appears to be in place, both Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are keen, and it might just be full speed ahead on the third big screen adventure for Bill and Ted. Encouragingly, Galaxy Quest helmer Dean Parisot is set to direct the movie, once he's done and dusted with this summer's RED 2. Might Bill & Ted make it to the big screen by the end of 2014, we wonder...?

Black Dynamite 2

Michael Jai White's Black Dynamite 2 is set to be a comedy with a westerm theme, with a tip of the hat along the way to Blazing Saddles, he's said. Shooting could potentially start any minute, although further details aren't yet available.

Blade Runner 2

With Prometheus overcoming a fair amount of chatter to bring home a sizeable box office take last year, Sir Ridley Scott continues to pursue his plan to make a new Blade Runner movie. Details on this one have been scant so far, although it's believed that it's quite high up Sir Ridley's list of projects. Don't expect Harrison Ford to have much of a part in it though, if at all...

Bourne 5

The Bourne franchise stands at something of a crossroads now. The piss-poor Bourne Legacy scraped together enough cash to keep it live and kicking at the box office, but Universal will presumably do its utmost to get Matt Damon back for the next film. Thing is, to do that it needs to lure Paul Greengrass back to the director's chair, and it all sounds like something of a long shot. It's pretty certain that there will be another Bourne movie, be it a Jeremy Renner-headlined Bourne Legacy 2 or something else entirely. But what shape it's going to take remains unclear.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Chris Evans is returning to the role of Captain America in Marvel's inevitable sequel. Interestingly, Joe and Anthony Russo have been hired to direct, which given their work on Community is a promising choice. Joining Evans in The Winter Soldier are Toby Jones, Samuel L Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Frank Grillo is reportedly on board too. The film is set for release in April 2014.

Casablanca 2

One of the strangest sequel stories of 2012 was the news that Warner Bros was interested in developing a belated follow-up to the legendary classic, Casablanca. It would be based on Cass Warner's Return To Casablanca script, which in turn was based on a treatment that Howard Koch had written many decades before. It's still a project somewhat in limbo, but there does appear some interest in making it. Quite how they'd go about tackling it, and who would be brave enough to take it on, remains to be seen.

Chronicle 2

Max Landis is working on a screenplay for the follow-up to 2012's hugely impressive Chronicle. That said, with director Josh Trank had at work on rebooting Fantastic Four (which is due in March 2015), it's going to be tricky to fit the movie in. Furthermore, there had been word that Fox wasn't thrilled with the direction Landis' screenplay was taking Chronicle 2, with the studio preferring something closer to the original than the idea Landis was putting forward. Where that's all left Chronicle 2 remains to be seen, but we fear we won't be seeing progress on it anytime soon. Hope we're wrong.

Chronicles Of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew

The Narnia films seem to have been decreasingly successful as the movie franchise has developed, but Voyage Of The Dawn Treader still did enough money to retain interest in making a fourth. That said, we've not heard of any substantive progress on the project of late. It remains in development at Walden Media for the time being.

Clerks III

It's been a year or two now since Kevin Smith announced that he was going to direct just one more feature film. That was set to be his long-cherished ice hockey feature, Hit Somebody. Yet at the end of 2012, Smith revealed that Hit Somebody was now being developed as a mini-series for the small screen, leaving one more slot open for his last big screen directorial outing. And that slot has been taken by Clerks III. Smith is working on the script now, and on getting the cast back together. We suspect he might look to shoot Clerks III this year too.

Cloudy 2: Revenge Of The Leftovers

Original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord may not be at the helm this time (they're making the long talked about Lego movie), but they remain involved in Cloudy 2: Revenge Of The Leftovers. Directing this time are Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, and the film has recently had its release date moved forward, to September 2013. Looking forward to it...

Cloverfield 2

It feels like Cloverfield sequel details come through on an annual basis. As such, while promoting Cabin In The Woods last year, writer Drew Goddard revealed that he's still keen to make Cloverfield 2. It's the crowded schedules of director Matt Reeves and producer JJ Abrams that are holding things back. Given that Reeves is on the new Planet Of The Apes film until the middle of next year, Cloverfield 2 looks like it's going nowhere fast.

Contagion 2

Given that the original film grossed over $130m at the worldwide box office, it's perhaps not so much of a surprise that Warner Bros is considering a sequel to its movie where lots of movie stars die, Contagion. The follow up will be produced by Scott Z Burns, who penned the first one. It's unclear as of yet whether Steven Soderbergh will return to direct, but we wouldn't bet on it.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

There's been a chance behind the camera with the Planet Of The Apes franchise, as Rupert Wyatt, the man who delivered the hugely impressive Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, elected not to work to the tight schedule required of Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, and passed on the project. The baton has been picked up by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves, and Andy Serkis is back on board too. The film is due in May 2014.

Despicable Me

Two further Despicable Me projects are in the works. A full-on sequel is due later this year, which is cunningly going be the name of Despicable Me 2. But at the end of 2014, you can also expect a spin-off movie centred around the minions from the film. We'd expect a Despicable Me 3 to be added to the slate in due course, too.

Die Hard 6

Bruce Willis had suggested, before he embarked on A Good Day To Die Hard, that there was one more big screen adventure for John McClane - once a Lieutenant, now a world-saving powerhouse - on the cards. We don't know too much more about it than that at the moment, but unless Die Hard 5 dies a very painful death at the box office, then John McClane is likely to have one last outing in him.

Dumb And Dumber 2

After it looked like it all fell apart at one point, the Farrelly Brothers are moving ahead with a second Dumb And Dumber movie (we'll ignore the prequel, which they weren't involved with), going by the title Dumb And Dumber To. The usually sequel-averse Jim Carrey has agreed to star again, alongside Jeff Daniels, and a screenplay is already in place. Expect the film in 2014.

The Expendables 3

It's US box office take may have been down on its predecessor, but the global success of The Expendables 2 has meant that The Expendables 3 is certain to happen. Sylvester Stallone will presumably be starting work on it shortly, if he hasn't already, and Jackie Chan has already said that he'll be featuring this time around. Whether Stallone succeeds in bringing in the likes of Nicolas Cage and Harrison Ford remains to be seen, though.

Finding Nemo 2

If things had gone differently, we may well have been talking about an Andrew Stanton-directed John Carter sequel here. Instead though, after the heavily-reported financial struggles that beset John Carter at the box office, Stanton has elected to make a follow-up to Finding Nemo. He may have planned that anyway, to be fair, but it's become his next project. The film is in its early stages, and 2016 sounds about the right time to expect it.

Fast & Furious 7

The sixth chapter of the Fast & Furious franchise arrives in cinemas this summer, but already, plans are afoot for the seventh. Justin Lin is expecting to direct one last time, while you can expect the lead cast and some very fast cars to feature. Universal is likely to keep to the two year gap between movies, leaving Fast & Furious 7 in place for a summer 2015 release.

Fright Night 2

We weren't aware that the new take on Fright Night had done particularly well, but it's clearly picked up interest somewhere along the line. A straight to DVD sequel has been commissioned, with a new cast brought in. Work is underway on the project, which will now star Chris Waller, Will Payne and Sean Power.

Ghostbusters 3

It seems as though the much talked about third Ghostbusters movie will finally press ahead this year. The movie is expected to shoot before 2013 is out, without any involvement from Bill Murray. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have been working on the film for some time, which Ivan Reitman is expected to direct. The idea will be to hand the mantle over to a new team of Ghostbusters, who will then take the franchise forward. That said, there have been that many twists and turns to get the film this fire, we wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised if it all fell apart again.

The Girl Who Played With Fire

The second part of the English language take on Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy appears stuck at the moment. David Fincher's film of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo did solid, if not exceptional business, but both Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are contracted for two further films. Sony keeps making noises that it's looking to press ahead with the other two films, but last we heard, it was in their court, and there wasn't a screenplay in place the studio was happy with. Don't be surprised if this one fizzles out...

Goon 2
The ultra-violent ice hockey comedy Goon has no shortage of fans, and Jay Baruchel and Jesse Chabot are now working on a screenplay for a second movie. Expect Seann William Scott to return, and Michael Dowse will be directing again. The film is currently in the writing stages.

Hancock 2
Director Peter Berg, while promoting his more-commercially-successful-than-you-might-think blockbuster Battleship last year admitted that a second Hancock film was still a distinct possibility. He's still interested in making another one, and reports that Will Smith is up for it too. It's finding a space in everyone's schedule that's apparently the ongoing problem.

The Hobbit
As you more than likely very well know, as well as a further Hobbit film this year, The Desolation Of Smaug, Peter Jackson has another lined up for the summer of 2014, There And Back Again. Given that the splitting of The Hobbit into three films has already been widely debated, it's probably best if we move on...

Hot Tub Time Machine 2

It might not have done amazing business at the box office, but Hot Tub Time Machine proved to be a sizeable DVD and Blu-ray hit, and MGM has put the wheels in motion for a sequel. Early reports suggest that John Cusack won't be involved with this one, although director Steve Pink is likely to return. So are the rest of the key cast: Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke. Pink and Corddry are on scripting duties.

Hotel Transylvania 2

The autumn of 2012 saw a trio of horror-related animated movies go head to head, with Hotel Transylvania doing battle with Frankenweenie and ParaNorman. Sadly, you can't help but feel that the weakest film won, with the sizeable gross for Hotel Transylvania leading Sony Pictures Animation to greenlight a sequel.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 and 3

Two sequels are well in the works to one of DreamWorks Animation's finest films, How To Train Your Dragon. Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film with Chris Sanders, is taking the helm for both movies. The first is due in June 2014, the second arrives in June 2016. After which, Mr DeBlois might just need a bit of a rest...

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is already scheduled for release this coming November, but there are two films left to come after that. The final book in Suzanne Collins' trilogy, Mockingjay, has been split into two films, and Francis Lawrence has been confirmed as directing them both (he's currently in post-production on Catching Fire). Mockingjay Part One is set for release in 2014, and Part Two will follow in 2015.

The Inbetweeners Movie 2

After initially being reluctant to commit to a film sequel, The Inbetweeners creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are apparently closing in on a follow-up. They're taking their time about it, and Morris told us last summer that "we've got an idea, think we'd like to do it if we can make it good, but we're a long way from it really happening". That still sounds a lot closer than they originally were, and we wouldn't be surprised in The Inbetweeners Movie 2 moves forward this year, with an eye on a summer 2014 release. That's speculation on our part, though.

Independence Day 2 and 3

The abandoning of the plans for a big screen re-release of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, due for later this summer, has led to some concern that the planned sequels were now off the cards. It's long been known that Emmerich and writer Dean Devlin were planned two follows, under the name ID4EVER (yikes). But apparently, there's still life in the project. Bill Pullman has, for instance, said that he'd be returning, and presumably we need to wait for Emmerich to finish up White House Down before getting any kind of progress.

Indiana Jones 5

Disney now owns the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise, and when it bought Lucasfilm, it said that it had attributed no value to it. Take that to mean that the chances of Indiana Jones 5 have slimmed out a lot, and while they're not completely dead, George Lucas' retirement from mainstream filmmaking suggests that they may be as good as. Throw in the fact that Steven Spielberg has said that he's not interested in making action movies any more, and Indy's days may well be finally numbered. After Crystal Skull, that's arguably no bad thing...

Insidious Chapter 2

A sequel is on the way to the insanely profitable Insidious, with both Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne signing on to reprise their roles from the first film. Production is starting imminently, with director James Wan at the helm again. Wan has taken his time before committing to the new film, so hopefully it'll be up to the standard of the first. The film is set for release at the end of August.

James Bond 24

Skyfall, as you probably know, broke no shortage of box office records. It's the first James Bond film to break $300m at the US box office, it's the biggest film of all time at British cinemas, and worldwide, it's taken more than $1bn. The first Bond film, or Sony movie, to do so. No pressure then for the next James Bond film, which John Logan is penning the script for (without Robert Wade and Neal Purvis). Logan is also likely to pen Bond 25, but the 24th movie, which Sam Mendes may direct, is currently being targeted for a late 2014 release. Daniel Craig will return.

Journey 3

Warner Bros has greenlit a third film in the Journey series, following the surprising success of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in early 2012. That said, when you've got Sir Michael Caine riding on the back of a giant bee, decent box office is the least you can expect. Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon is expected to shoot this year, with a release planned for 2014. Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson are expected to return, with Brad Peyton once again directing.

Jurassic Park 4

It's finally been confirmed that a fourth Jurassic Park movie is heading to cinemas, and we've got a release date for it too. Jurassic Park 4 has been scheduled for June 13th 2014, with Steven Spielberg producing. That's about all that's known about the film thus far, though.

The King's Speech 2

Colin Firth is reportedly set to reprise his Oscar-winning role as King George VI in a follow-up to The King's Speech. The new movie is in very early development apparently, and Geoffrey Rush would also be set to return. The new movie will be set during the Blitz, and director Tom Hooper - currently enjoying success with Les Miserables - is reportedly interested too.

Kung Fu Panda 3

Jennifer Yu is returning to direct for the third time, as Kung Fu Panda is set to become a trilogy. Jack Black is once more on voicing duties, and presumably, the film will pick up from the teasing ending at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2. The film is set for release in March 2016.

The Legend Of Conan

Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that he's set to reprise the role of Conan on the big screen for the third time, in The Legend Of Conan. Shooting is planned to start later this year, with Chris Morgan working on the screenplay. The idea is to basically ignore the Jason Momoa-headlined reboot, and follow Arnie's take on the character as he hits his senior years. A 2014 release is likely.

Machete Kills Again... In Space!

The second Machete movie, Machete Kills, is now inked in for release in September 2013. Danny Trejo is back in the title role, and Robert Rodriguez is directing. The pair are set to make one further Machete movie though, with the previously announced Machete Kills Again... In Space! set to complete the B-movie trilogy. Rodriguez won't get to that until he's done with his Sin City sequel though.

Mad Max: Fury Road

After what seems like an exhaustive collection of delays, George Miller has finally shot his long-mooted fourth Mad Max movie. What we don't know at the moment is when it's set for release, but there had been talk of getting Mad Max 5 moving quite quickly. Don't be surprised if the latter, as usual, depends on the success of the former...

Magic Mike 2

A low budget film that turned into a sizeable hit, Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike - which he developed alongside star Channing Tatum - took $167m worldwide, and sequel talk has inevitably followed. One possibility this time around is that Channing Tatum will direct as well as star in Magic Mike 2, although he's since said that he'd look to tackle a smaller film first. Development continues on Magic Mike 2 though.

Major League 3

A belated Major League sequel continues to be developed, one that will involve Charlie Sheen and quite possibly Wesley Snipes, if he's out of prison in time. David S Ward has penned the script again, but until financing is secured for the project, there are no further details available.

Man Of Steel 2

Early story work has begun, we understand, on a second adventure for Henry Cavill's take on Superman. The Zack Snyder-directed reboot hits the big screen this summer, and Warner Bros is presumably keen to have a second film in cinemas by 2016 at the latest. It's unlikely to target 2015, given that's when it's scheduling its Justice League movie.

The Mechanic 2

All we have for this one is a sales document from Nu Image and Millennium Films that lists The Mechanic 2 as one of its current projects. Jason Statham starred in the first film (a remake of the Charles Bronson-headlined original), which Simon West directed. We've no idea at all if they're both going to return for another go.

Men In Black 4

Sony spent a lot of money to revive the Men In Black cinematic franchise, and given the film's $600m-plus worldwide take, it won its gamble. So much so that the studio has already revealed that it plans to make a fourth adventure, with Will Smith presumably courted to headline again. Whether he'll be accompanied by Tommy Lee Jones or Josh Brolin remains to be seen. Expect Barry Sonnenfeld to be given first refusal to direct.

Mission: Impossible 5

The franchise that keeps delivering Tom Cruise impressive box office results, no matter what's happening with the rest of his films, work is afoot on a fifth Mission: Impossible movie. This time around, the mooted director is Christopher McQuarrie, who impressively handled the Christmas 2012 Tom Cruise vehicle, Jack Reacher. We'd reckon that M:I 5 could be on cinema screens for Christmas 2014, but don't hold us to it...

Monsters 2

Gareth Edwards' Monsters remains a low budget sci-fi gem, and Vertigo Films has confirmed that it's got a sequel in the works. Edwards is busy rebooting Godzilla, and thus the directorial mantle has passed over to Tom Green. Green has directed many episodes of the TV show Misfits, and Monsters 2 will mark his big screen directing debut. We've no further details on the film at the moment, but we're watching eagerly.

The Muppets 2

After the hugely successful big screen resurrection of The Muppets, director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller are hard at work on another Muppets adventure. There's no Jason Segel this time around, with Ricky Gervais set to star. It's going to be Europe-set this time around too, with early reports suggesting a road movie in the style of The Great Muppet Caper. It's set for release in March 2014.

Nativity 3

The first Nativity saw Martin Freeman getting some little cherubs to sing sweetly. The second Nativity handed over the mantle to David Tennant. Both proved to be sizeable hits at the British box office. So much so that director Debbie Isitt has been invited to make a third in her series of improvised comedies, with Nativity 3 likely to be released towards the end of 2014. Can she unite Martin Freeman and David Tennant in the same film? That appears to be the plan...

Night At The Museum 3

The first two Night At The Museum movies, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ben Stiller, were sizeable worldwide hits, and it's been known for some time that a third movie in the series was in the planning stages. The latest we hear is that Levy won't be directing this one, instead choosing to produce. Ben Stiller is likely to take the lead role once again though. A new director has not yet been confirmed.

Pacific Rim 2

One of the big gambles of summer 2013 is Pacific Rim, a massive and expensive blockbuster that doesn't have the safety blanket of a franchise of any kind behind it. It does have Guillermo del Toro behind the camera though, and he's keen to do a second instalment should the box office for Pacific Rim measure up. Outline work has begun on Pacific Rim 2, but del Toro has no shortage of other projects on his slate.

Paranormal Activity 5

Ah, you know the drill here. The annual appearance of a new Paranormal Activity film is once more scheduled for October, although there appears to be a case of diminishing returns at the box office if Paranormal Activity 4 is anything to go by. That said, the movies are incredibly cheap to make by modern standards, and the ending of the fourth film does suggest one or two more interesting directions for the fifth to follow. We'll find out on October 25th if it does.

The Penguins Of Madagascar

Spin-off or sequel? Either way, a movie focusing on the chortlesome penguins from the Madagascar movies is underway at DreamWorks Animation. It's scheduled for March 2015, and is being put together under the supervision of Bee Movie director Simon J Smith.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5

Disney has officially earmarked its fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie for the summer of 2015. Johnny Depp is definitely returning too, although the identity of the film's director remains unknown. The last we heard, Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) had been hired to do screenplay work. Hopefully, there will be sizeable changes this time around, to put the once-promising franchise back on track.

Pitch Perfect 2

A surprise sleeper hit for Universal last year, the Anna Kendrick-headlined Pitch Perfect has grossed over $100m worldwide, and it was announced at the end of 2012 that a sequel was moving into development. Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin are both apparently in talks to return, although it's unclear if Jason Moore will direct again. Expect Pitch Perfect 2 potentially next year.

Project X 2

We'll keep the words to a minimum on this one. The cheap and shoddy Project X made lots of money. Warner Bros has commissioned a sequel. Michael Bacall and Matt Drake were reportedly working on the treatment for it. That'll do.

Prometheus 2

If Prometheus was set at least one film away from the beginning of Alien, then Prometheus 2 will presumably be the movie to plug the gap and join all the films together. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender both have contracts in place securing their return, and Fox is planning to have the movie in cinemas in either 2014 or 2015. As things stand, Sir Ridley Scott will be back to direct again, although it's been confirmed that Damon Lindelof isn't involved with the script this time around.

Puss In Boots 2

Guillermo del Toro, who has an ongoing consulting role with DreamWorks Animation, revealed towards the end of 2012 that a follow-up to Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots is still apparently a possibility. He revealed that a few drafts of the screenplay have been done, and it seems the plan is to press ahead with another film. That said, given that DreamWorks has announced its slate through to 2016, it might be 2017 before we see it.

The Raid 2

Going by the name of Berandal, director Gareth Evans is already deep into work on a follow-up to his astonishing action movie, The Raid. It's going to be set just two hours after the events of the first movie, and Berandel is before the cameras right now. Iko Uwais is returning, and the budget has jumped from $1m to $3m for this follow-up.

Rambo 5

Sylvester Stallone remains keen to put one final adventure for Rambo on the big screen, but he's aware that time may not be on his side. He's looking to send the character out on a high, with the variable being whether his body could hold up to the strain of the movie. Various different treatments for Rambo 5 have mooted over the past few years. We suspect that Stallone may look to it once The Expendables 3 is sorted.

Real Steel 2

Robot boxing movie Real Steel didn't make masses of money at the box office, but it did seem to make enough ($300m worldwide). As such, director Shawn Levy has been insistent from the start that he's planning to make a follow-up. Last we heard, work was underway on the script, although Levy is a busy man, so further updates have been thin on the ground. It still appears to be an active project though. And Hugh Jackman isn't averse to sequels.

Resident Evil 6

Paul W S Anderson originally planned to shoot two Resident Evil movies back to back, but instead focused on just getting Resident Evil: Retaliation in the can. That film made sufficient cash to keep the franchise going, and Anderson has suggested in the past that he might like to round things off in a sixth and potentially final film. Whether that turns out to be the case or not remains to be seen, but expect Milla Jovovich back as Alice either way. Autumn 2014 seems a logical time to expect the movie.

Rio 2

Carlos Saldanha is working away on a follow-up to the hit animated movie Rio, which will once again feature the voice talent of Jesse Eisenberg. The plot is apparently going to intertwine somehow with the 2014 World Cup (which is taking place in Brazil), and perhaps unsurprisingly, the movie is scheduled for release in April 2014, in the build up to the tournament.

Rush Hour 4

Both Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are seemingly keen to reprise their roles in the Rush Hour franchise for a fourth instalment in the massively successful franchise. Chan and Tucket are reportedly developing the project, although we're not sure at the moment as to whether director Brett Ratner - who has made all three Rush Hours to date - will return as well. Ratner's immediately priority will be his Hercules movie, which he's making with The Rock for release in 2014.

Safe House 2

2012 proved to be another strong year for Denzel Washington on the big screen, with his Oscar-nominated turn in Flight at the end of the year, and surprise hit Safe House at the start. Thanks to some strong direction from Daniel Espinosa, Safe House was a film that really did have its moments, and Universal is planning a follow-up. Last we heard, original writer David Guggenheim was exploring the direction a sequel could take. It's unclear whether Washington and Ryan Reynolds would return as of yet, in any form.

Salt 2

After looking like it had fallen off Angelina Jolie's slate of projects, it looks as if Salt 2 is back up and running. After a long period of nothing being heard, a new screenwriter was hired back in December 2012, with Becky Johnston now rewriting Kurt Wimmer's original draft. Phillip Noyce is unlikely to direct again, but we expect Salt 2 to head into production by next year at the latest, if it is indeed going to happen.

Sherlock Holmes 3

A third adventure for Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes remains in development, although the actor's commitment to the world of Marvel is making scheduling a bit of a problem. Jude Law will be back on board too, and producer Dan Lin has said that the film remains a "high priority". Drew Pearce is working on the script. We don't know as of yet if Guy Ritchie will be back to direct the third film.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Robert Rodriguez is apparently planning to have his long-awaited second Sin City movie in cinemas later in 2013, although don't be surprised if it slips back to 2014. Once again, he's assembled a terrific cast, with Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mickey Rourke and Michael Madsen amongst the company. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, which Frank Miller is co-directing, is currently set for an October release.

The Smurfs 3

Sit down if you don't know this number already, but Sony's The Smurfs grossed over half a billion dollars at the global box office. As such, there's a sequel heading to cinemas this year already. However, The Smurfs 3 is already on the release roster too, with a 2015 release targeted. Something to look forward to there.

Snow White And The Huntsman 2

Kristen Stewart, after some doubt, is now confirmed as returning for Snow White And The Huntsman 2, although for reasons that umpteen gossip magazines are happy to tell you about, Rupert Sanders won't be returning to direct. Originally, there was talk of a spin-off movie rather than a sequel, but it looks like a follow-up is now the way Universal is going with the film. Expect it by 2015.

Spongebob Squarepants 2

Now that Paramount has parted company with DreamWorks Animation, it's pressing ahead with its own slate of animated movies, and a follow-up to The Spongebob Squarepants Movie is already in production. Details on the story are all but not-existent at the moment, but we do know that Paramount is planning to release the film in 2014.

Star Trek 13

JJ Abrams has inevitably remained coy on the idea of doing a third Star Trek movie. Thus far, he's said that he has ideas for another movie, but it all hinges on the box office performance of Star Trek Into Darkness. We suspect he may have another hit on his hands. That said, he's also got the small matter of the next film in the list to consider. As such, while he's committed to another Star Trek movie, he may just produce, rather than direct it. We'll find out in due course...

Star Wars: Episode VII

You might have heard about this. Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm has kickstarted the return of the Star Wars franchise to the big screen, this time without George Lucas involved. Films are planned for every couple of years, with Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) penning the screenplay. JJ Abrams has been confirmed in the director's chair, and the current plan remains to have Episode VII in cinemas for the summer of 2015...

Super Troopers 2

The Broken Lizard team still plan to make a Super Troopers sequel, although director Jay Chandrasekhar is currently working on Yogi Bear 2 for Warner Bros. The hold up has been, according to the director, an unnamed legal issue with Fox, which all concerned are apparently looking to resolve shortly. Super Troopers 2 may yet press forward before the end of the year.

Taken 3

Liam Neeson was pretty open on the press tour for Taken 2 that he wasn't keen on doing a third installment, and it reportedly took some persuasion to get him to sign onto it. Furthermore, writer Luc Besson said that Taken was a two film story arc once upon a time. That said, Taken 2's sizeable box office returns has led to Fox reportedly starting development work on a third movie. It may yet prove quite tricky to get the mighty Neeson to commit to it, though...

Ted 2

Filming starts later this year on a sequel to the swear bear movie, Ted, which gave director Seth MacFarlane and star Mark Wahlberg a major hit in 2012. Both are back for the second film, and it'll be the first sequel to one of his movies that Wahlberg has made. Given the post-production required, and that shooting isn't due to start until Wahlberg is done on Transformers 4, the earliest we'd expect Ted 2 is at the end of 2013.

Terminator 5

Given the box office disappointment of The Last Stand, if Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to continue with a high profile film career, it looks like he needs Terminator 5 more than he once did. No wonder Arnie has reaffirmed his commitment to the project. The current status is that David Ellison and Megan Ellison are working the numbers, whilst on script duties are Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. Justin Lin was down to direct, but his commitment to the Fast & Furious franchise makes that unlikely. Still, we'd expect progress on Terminator 5 this year, even though Arnie is currently scheduled to spend the back end of 2013 making The Legend Of Conan.

Think Like A Man 2

Fantastic Four director Tim Story scored a solid US box office hit with his film of self-help book Think Like A Man. And whilst it may have done little at the UK box office, the film's done enough to get a sequel greenlit. It's unclear as of yet if Story will be returning for the movie, or when Screen Gems is looking to schedule it. We're not sure we'll be keeping you posted on it either, if it's all the same...

Thor: The Dark World

Game Of Thrones director Alan Taylor is calling the shots on the new Thor film, taking over from Kenneth Branagh. Chris Hemsworth takes on the role of Thor for the first time, with many of the key cast returning. A notable new addition, in full-on villain mode, is Christopher Eccleston. The film is scheduled for a late October 2013 release in the UK.

Three Men And A Baby 3

Apparently, this one's still on the cards. Earlier this year, Tom Selleck was reported by Entertainment Weekly as saying that he's still interested in the film, but that Disney hadn't given it the green light. It turns out though that the studio apparently still has it on its list of active projects. The original plan was to do Three Men And A Bride, which would be the logical progression. We await further news with interest, but Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson all seem keen on returning.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 2

This one's still bubbling along nicely, with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy director Tomas Alfredson on board. It'll be an adaptation of Smiley's People we get next, with Gary Oldman back as the title character. Producer Eric Fellner said at the end of last year that screenwriter Peter Straughan is working away on the film too.

Transformers 4

After a decade of making Transformers films, Michael Bay went away to make his long-cherished Pain & Gain movie, and now he's back on Transformers duties, apparently for one last time. This one's going to stay in the same narrative field as the previous three films, although it's a reboot of sorts, given that it's dispensing with the likes of Shia LaBeouf's character. Instead, Mark Wahlberg is going to take on starring duties this time around, in what's set to be the first film in a new trilogy. Expect it in 2014.

Triplets

Amongst the many sequels that Arnold Schwarzenegger is working on is apparently a follow-up to his first big comedy hit, Twins. The plan would be to reunite him with Danny DeVito, and to introduce a third brother, with Eddie Murphy mooted as a possibility. Ivan Reitman would likely be offered the chance to direct, although he's also involved in trying to get Ghostbusters 3 off the ground. Triplets has festered in development for some time though, and we wouldn't be surprised if it stayed there for some time longer yet.

TRON 3

After spending a small fortune to turn TRON: Legacy into a hit, Disney is continuing to press ahead with a further adventure. As of the end of 2012, Jesse Wigutow had been hired to take a stab at the screenplay, and director Joseph Kosinski (currently putting the finishing touches to Tom Cruise sci-fi vehicle Oblivion) is returning to direct. Given the hefty amount of effects work involved, we wouldn't expect TRON 3 until 2015 though at the earliest.

Wanted 2

Since we started doing this annual sequel round-ups many years ago, Wanted 2 has been a mainstay. It's a project we remain unconvinced will happen, and yet every few months that an update that seems to suggest it's actually live and kicking. The latest came in the autumn of 2012, where it was revealed that the film will definitely not feature - for understandable reasons - Angelina Jolie. Derek Haas and Michael Brandt were last heard to be working on a new draft for the script, and we wonder if D-day for Wanted 2 is coming shortly. Sooner or later, someone will have to make a call on it one way or the other.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2

Every time director Robert Zemeckis has a new film out, he tends to get asked as to the progress of Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2. And as he went on the publicity circuit for Flight, the same question cropped up. His answer? The script is in place, it just needs Disney to greenlight it. Which, at the time of writing, Disney hasn't...

The Woman In Black: Angel Of Death

A follow up to The Woman In Black is on its way, this time with mostly new characters. We'd be surprised if Daniel Radcliffe turns up in it. This time around, the movie is being directed by Tom Harper, and a 2014 release date is likely.

World War Z 2

As is increasingly common with Hollywood blockbusters, a big film is launched with the eye from the start on further installments. World War Z, based on Max Brooks' book, hasn't had an easy journey to the big screen, with apparently sizeable reshoots having taken place. But the Brad Pitt-headlined adaptation finally makes it cinemas this summer. If it does well, Paramount is understood to be looking to get a trilogy out of it.

Wreck-It Ralph 2

You have to go back to The Rescuers Down Under for the only sequel Disney has made to one of its main line of animated features (we're excluding Fantasia 2000). And The Rescuers Down Under, save for technically interesting things, isn't actually much cop. We're got far higher hopes for a Wreck-It Ralph 2 though, which looks like it might actually happen. The box office returns of the first film have helped, but so will the enthusiasm of director Rich Moore, who's made no secret of the fact that he'd be keen to return to the characters. No formal announcement has been made, but don't be surprised if development work has started already...

The X-Files 3

The low cost of making an X-Files movie certainly increases the chances of the long-promised third big screen adventure for Mulder and Scully. The decision lies with 20th Century Fox, with executive producer Frank Spotnitz still pressing for a new film. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have expressed interest in returning, it just needs someone at Fox to champion, and approve the budget, for the project.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Bryan Singer is back on directorial duties in the X-Men franchise with the follow-up to First Class, X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Given the apparent time travel element that's inherent in the story, we're getting two different sets of big screen X-Men starring in this one too. So, whilst it'll be James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence on the one hand, we're also being teased with the appearance of Hugh Jackman, and apparently Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen too. The film's set for July 2014.

xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage

A film that was looking all set to go at one stage, a reboot of the xXx franchise has remained on the starting blocks now for some time. The problem is that Vin Diesel's schedule is rather full, what with Riddick III and Fast & Furious sequels to deal with. Director of the original, Rob Cohen, remains interested in coming back for the third chapter if it does press ahead.

Yogi Bear 2

The Dukes Of Hazzard director Jay Chandrasekhar is the surprising choice to direct Warner Bros' Yogi Bear 2, which is pressing ahead at the studio. We can't raise much enthusiasm to tell you a great deal more about it, save that it's expected to hit cinemas next year. If it has a poster as memorable as the one to the first film though, we'll be sure to let you know.

Zombieland 2

Director Ruben Flesicher has admitted that the chances of the once-suggested Zombieland 2 happening are in decline, although he refused to rule it out altogether. Whether the news that Amazon is making a TV series based around the movie will help or not remains to be seen. Best file this one as a very long shot, though.

Zoolander 2

Ben Stiller looks finally set to get Zoolander 2 off the ground later this year. Last autumn, we heard that Lady Gaga had apparently been offered the role of Derek Zoolander's love interest. Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell are set to reprise their roles, with a release expected now in 2014.
