And if it were a new show in the Buffyverse, following a new Slayer (the show has been gone so long there could actually now be a new teen Slayer who'd been named in honour of her!) I might give it a go. But a straight reboot?
All I can say to them is, appropriately enough, "Bite me".

The point of Buffy was, according to Joss Whedon, that he had seen so many occasions in films and TV shows where a woman walks into a dark alley and is killed, so he thought it would be fun, interesting, and different for the (blonde) woman to be in a dark alley with a monster and kick its ass.

If you take that aspect away from Buffy, it loses its Buffy-ness.

You seem to have watched enough of the different Star Trek series to know that staying within a tried and tested formula is not necessarily a bad thing. Similarly, the 1980s version of The Twilight Zone had some great episodes. I've only seen the 2003-2009 version of Battlestar Galactica, but I can't see how the 1978 incarnation would be any better and, although I haven't seen either, the 21st century Hawaii Five-O is generally considered superior to the original show and apparently Star Wars: Clone Wars improved on Star Wars: The Clone Wars – I think you've seen both so might have an opinion.

I know it's not the same, but I thought the TV show Bates Motel was excellent, and thoroughly enjoyed Westworld, both spin-offs from feature films or, if you prefer, a different way of adapting the source material.

Great points, don't have much faith in charmed reboot , I would of liked them to went the other way with this and made them all men , I have no problem with turning male characters into female etc , but does seem Hollywood etc have a problem with doing the other way.

Whedon is involved in Buffy so have more faith in that, and with any luck they can make buffy more interesting this time as I found her the dullest character of the show.

Yes both bates motel and Westwood were excellent

David Fury is saying that the new Buffy series is "almost guaranteed" to be a new show within the same continuity rather than a remake. If this is true, then Whedon and company need to make this officially clear ASAP if they expect fan support rather than derision, because the latter has understandably been the main response thus far.

So what's the word? Is Buffy a codename now where anyone can be Buffy ala James Bond?

It can't be Buffy without SMG. Should be called Buttcheeks the Vampire Slayer or whatever the new girl is called.

Maybe it will. But some clarification is needed very quick, as few people seem impressed so far.

If the show was called Slayer, you could cast another actress in the main role and keep that classic opening narration explaining how "She is the Slayer". The show might benefit from a new group of actors playing different characters in a new location and perhaps with better production values and CGI than Buffy the Vampire Slayer enjoyed during its first few seasons.

Sounds exciting!

Hopefully it would feature some sort of Angel of Death who would Reign in Blood as Hell Awaits before being Reborn on the Altar of Sacrifice. The new Slayer would Cleanse the Soul of the Live Undead as she is an Expendable Youth, Born of Fire and would Show No Mercy.
